Bio

Toronto's Will Coke is an honest songwriter. His addictive alternative-pop songs are a product of long hours alone with his thoughts, his pets, and his acoustic guitar. The mood is not always cheerful, but Will keeps working as hard as he can to write the next song. No matter what happens, he will keep writing.

Supplemented by his backing band, Will wasted no time releasing his debut EP, All Unknown, and promoting it with selected gigs in his hometown and the surrounding area.

“Ever since I was a toddler, when my parents put on a tape, my head would turn to hear it closely. I always wanted an electric guitar but, earlier in my life, I had to practice on a classical/acoustic because my mom worried about my fingers. I kept up that practice and this is its amalgamation.”

Will has been dreaming of playing the guitar since childhood, and after experimenting with music throughout his school years, at 23 he is finally able to fully focus on his songwriting.

His debut EP, All Unknown, is a mix of acoustic instruments and electronic sounds tied together with guitar and soft, sincere vocals. There is a dark quality to Will’s music, which he addresses below:

“Our music is, at its basis, sad. Any beauty we hope to achieve by it should come from its striving away from that sadness. If we succeed, that melancholy origin shouldn’t have any bearing on the final product. If there is still sadness, the hope is for a transformative exploration of that feeling to uplift, inspire, and relieve.”

During live performances, Will is joined by drummer Rich Taylor (who also plays on All Unknown), and bassist Jesse Parkinson. They've been steadily playing gigs in Toronto and have many more planned for 2013 (including a spot at Canadian Music Fest 2013).

Currently, All Unknown is in rotation at most Canadian college/university radio stations, and was recently nominated for a Toronto Independent Music Award.
