"June 16th, THE WORLD IN CONCERT"

A Homewood native, The World has been writing raps since he was 13. Now at 25, he looks back on quite a few experiences that serve as inspiration for his songs, from falling asleep to gunshots to losing those around him to murder. Determined to make a better life for himself, The World channels those experiences into music that speaks of hope and comfort. - www.artsfestival.net, June 2006

"The World...In Austrailia"

Thanks for the interview man, introduce yourself to the world (no pun intended).

They call me The World, from Pittsburgh, PA USA. I was named Automatic up until 2001 when I auditioned for Warner Bros Upcoming Reality TV show called Urban Icon, at which they said I should change the name to The World because of how versatile I am and how it explains how I am everything in one. I didn’t like the name at first, thought it to be too cocky but after thinking about The Game's success and no one really thinking his name was over the top, I decided to stick with it. Since then, I’ve found so many ways to use it. So it’s definitely grown on me.

How did the Urban Icon venture work out?

I originally had gone down with my R&B group Lecture, and we planned on auditioning as a group, but we met one of the judges and she had said we should also audition as solo artists as well. So we did, and I was the only one who made it. The TV show is still being put together, it’s a mix of American Idol, The Apprentice and The Real World. Its 7 groups of 3; a potential producer, potential artist and potential manager all in the competition, and it’s a month long show in Tennessee with random eliminations. The winning three get $50,000 Cash, a Toyota Scion, a touring Schedule with major rap act, and a 1year recording contract. It definitely boosted my confidence probably too much. After making the cut and being told to change my name to The World, you can only guess what that does to an ego in one day (laughs).

So when did the auditions go down?

February 2003, the show was to be shot that summer in the Frick Mansion. But when our lovely city officials found out they were installing cameras in the historical landmark, they turned down the deal so they moved it to Tennessee and are having a house built with recording studios and everything needed for the show, and that’s what I’m told, is taking so long. The first day out of two was held at Club Fuzion and then the last day of auditions was held at a Homewood recording studio called Panama Records. Comcast ONDEMAND, Kiss 96.1fm are a few of the sponsors I’ve heard who are backing the show.

Are you hopeful of the show being shot sometime this year?

Just as hopeful as last year! But as far as holding my breath? No, because it’s been so long, and the reason sponsors have changed over the years is because it’s hard to keep them interested and supplying money when things aren’t hitting press. So if they keep slacking, so-to-speak, they will loose their sponsors and they will not be able to do show, so who knows.

Aight well moving on a little, do you have any releases you’re currently pushing?

My Spring release titled, "Surrounded By Stars" is what I’m currently promoting, it’s my 4th Full length CD release & I’d say my best overall. We're coming out pretty strong with this one, full promotion and such. We've done a couple dozen photo shoots, I have some promotional posters, and T-Shirts. Setting up a small tour and getting things together for two videos we're shooting later this summer. One being shot here in Pittsburgh and the other being shot in Miami, FL hopefully this spring break or summer.
This CD contains a lot of club style, radio ready tracks. Which is a bit of a new style for me, with my last release "Harder Than Ever" I had a lot of good head bangers, but not really something you could listen to on the way to the club. But we're taking a different direction with “Surrounded By Stars” we're trying to appeal to more people. I know some say I ain’t keeping it real, or I’m selling out, but that’s not it. It’s that if I plan on selling records, and not just free styling on the corner for the rest of my life, then I’ve gotta make tracks that will sell. And the club stuff is where it’s at, I listen to more club joints than underground rap, so it’s only the next natural step for me to take. I never came out as a underground hip-hop rapper, I was just underground, caus no one had heard of me ya dig? But with anything, you’ve got to present yourself to your audience. Like you go in front of the judge, you wear a suit, you go to the store you rock some jeans, and you hit the club in your flyest gear! It’s all about marketing the product.

You mentioned this is your fourth release, are these all albums or mixtapes?

This is my 4th full length album, I did a couple EP's no official mixtapes or nothing. As a DJ I’ve have had my original tracks on tons of mixtapes, the latest being put on a French mixtape Called "ElectroMakers vol.3".

How have your previous releases been accepted?

Rather well actually. It’s funny cause I think back to how long I’ve actually been doing this, and to where I’m at now it seems like I haven’t gone far. But when you also think that up until 2 years ago, I did zero promoting, and only handed about 10 total CD’s out to my friends. Even on Myspace.com I started out not doing any promoting, I couldn’t even remember my url for a while. - Certified Hip Hop Magazine Austrailia: Jon E

Bio

A Pittsburgh, PA native, but far from being known as just local, The World is more than a name, its an expression. Well known as "Automatic" from age 13 till age 21, he worked on perfecting his writing, freestyling and producing.

These skills were helped along under the wing of 211 Productions CEO Justin "jTRAX" Philman, who welcomed Automatic in with open arms and gave him what would soon be a permanant seat in 211 Productions and Madface Ent.

Freestyling took a back seat as bookings rolled in and a higher demand for full length albums were being made. It wasn't before long that Automatic would be up to his ears in music and moving in what seemed to be fast forward.

2001 came quick and so did the auditions for tv show "Urban Icon". A Warner Bros. reality show where they would take 7 teams of 3, (producer, rapper, manager) and have them compete for various prizes and contracts. He auditiond as a member of his R&B Trio "Lecture" and a Warner Bros. Rep, asked him to audition seperatly as well. He did so, and after asking him a series of questions about his talents ranging from singing, rapping, producing, dancing, and much more, they told him, "You shouldn't call yourself Automatic, you should call yourself The World, because you are so versatile". And it was at that moment that The World Was Born.

Now in 2008, The World, 27, is releasing his 7th Full Length Album, under the management of Exel Management, and this time he is going global. The new album, titled, "Global Warning", is being backed by a massive tour planning to take off in Spring starting in Sunny Florida and moving up the East coast ending in New York. After that the tour moves west hitting many cities including Chicago, Houston and Detroit.

The World is a veteran to performances and club appearances in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Chicago to name a few. He has shared the stage with the likes of Bone Thugs In Harmony, Ivory The Human Hustle, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Focus, Souljahz, Pigeon John and many more.

Quickly rising to the top of internet sites MySpace.com, soundclick.com and purevolume.com , "The World" is gaining momentum and is bringing with him, a rather large and diverse fan base.

Its best said by The World himself, "Music is like breathing to me, and with every breath its a new note, a new direction and a new song. It comes as easy as inhaling and exhaling, and i breathe deep."
