"Live Review: The Xcerts – Black Heart Camden"

You probably saw us shouting about it yesterday, but Brighton based trio, and long time favourites of Amazing Radio, The Xcerts have finally unveiled their brand new single! Shaking In The Water is the title, and we joined the likes of many fellow music fans, bands, websites and even The Independent in shouting about and sharing the new video. Last night also marked their sold out London show, so we sent along our brand new contributor Heather Davina Campbell to experience their live set.

I’m just going to put it out there. It was hotter than the sun in The Black Heart in Camden last night. I always try and focus on the music and the crowd, but when you’re sweating from places you didn’t know you could sweat from, it’s really difficult to look past that. Despite the fact that most people looked like they’d ran a marathon before The Xcerts even took to the stage, I don’t think the audience could have given more warmth to the trio from Aberdeen.

The first four tracks were engulfed with an audience sing along. To the extent that at times, from the back (next to the air conditioning) you could only just hear Murray’s powerful vocals over the ever more powerful crowd.

It’s always an apprehensive gig when the artist have new tracks to debut, but the atmosphere in The Black Heart was more a nervous excitement, rather than a “oh god they’re going to play loads of songs we’ve never heard.” The announcement of “The next song is a new one,” was met with a rather joyous, “about bloody time!” from a member of the crowd. Even their new single, Shaking In The Water, for which the video had only come out that day, was met with eager voices mouthing out the chorus.

The Xcerts have the ability to write songs that not only make you want to sing your heart out to the emotion behind each lyric, but also to screech out every guitar riff and air drum until your arms ache. It must be quite a sight to see; a sold out room of soaking wet people making seemingly involuntary body movements, while screaming out words in a blatantly Scottish accent, regardless of where they’re from.

We’ve waited four years since the last album, Slackerpop, and Murray reassured the audience that the new LP will be with us later in the year (albeit an uncertain, “October? Ish?”). But the live show is definitely capable of fulfilling our thirsty, noisy, anthemic sing-along needs in the meantime. Fully recommended.

"5 Reasons To Get Really, Really Excited For The Xcerts' New Album"

The Xcerts' new album 'There Is Only You' is coming, and there are all sorts of reasons to get pumped for November 03.

This is what it looks like.

And this is the tracklisting:

1. 2.12.12
2. Live Like This
3. Shaking In The Water
4. Kick It
5. I Don't Care
6. Kevin Costner
7. Teenage Lust
8. Pop Song
9. Kids On Drugs
10. She
11. There Is Only You

Now here's why it's going to rule.

1. Because it's got this song on it.
'Shaking In The Water' is the first taste of the album we've had, and it's really bloody good. Also any band who can fix up a garage that nicely is alright in our book.

2. Because frontman Murray Macleod was deaf for a while during the writing. Yep, deaf.
Well that's an interesting one...
"I had to take three months out because I perforated my eardrum," he says. "I was deaf with incredibly loud tinnitus for about two and a half months. It was terrifying. But in that time I started studying classic rock records, or what's deemed as classic. So I was looking at 'Damn The Torpedoes' by Tom Petty, 'Born To Run', and 'Tim' by The Replacements, and it just so happened that all those were their third records, which tied in with us feeling like we needed to make this life-changing record for ourselves."

3. Because 'Scatterbrain'
The band's last album kicked all sorts of arse, and by the time 'There Is Only You Drops', we'll have been waiting over FOUR LONG YEARS for a follow-up to 'Scatterbrain'. That's 1,492 days between albums! Here's hoping it was worth the wait.

4. Because it's happy and sad and happy and sad. All at the same time.
Murray explains: "It's heightened the intensity of this idea of there being one person in my life who I love and want to be with. This isn't a break-up record but in a way it does sound like it. We wanted it to sound like a romantic rock record, even though it's a sad romance, the romance you can have with nostalgia."

5. Because Scotland
Twin Atlantic. Biffy Clyro. Fatherson. Scotland doesn't seem to do bad rock music at the moment. Thank you, Scotland.

'There Is Only You' is set to be released on November 03 via Raygun Music. - Rock Sound

Aberdeen/Exeter 3 piece THE XCERTS are best described as a 'distorted pop' band, making a very big sound and an even bigger stir with their recent comeback to both the stage and studio. With their highly anticipated 3rd album waiting to be released this summer, the band are really making a returning statement.

2 impressive albums, 10 years of experience and dedication and countless tours have brought The Xcerts a long way from their genesis in the headmaster’s study at school in Aberdeen, where Murray Macleod (vocals/guitar) and Jordan Smith (bass) first met when they were 13. In the build up to the release of their much anticipated 3rd record, the trio are more self-assured than ever, and rightly so. Patience, hard work and emphatic belief have fuelled this group; when so many of their peers have fallen by the wayside, The Xcerts are ready to step up.

With upcoming single 'Shaking In The Water' ready to take off in July, the band are making all the right moves in making 2014 one to remember.

Singer and front man/guitarist Murray MacLeod explains a bit more about ‘Shaking In The Water’ Lyrically the song is about helplessness and  how I was solely to blame for finding myself in a regretful position with another person. In previous songs / records i have always found a scapegoat when singing about something I'm to blame for but I've grown up a bit and this time round I’m throwing my hands in the air and admitting my faults."
