Bio

The Y Axes are a DIY future pop band from San Francisco. With intricate melodies slipped into even the most straightforward phrases, and driving rhythms punctuated with moments of negative space so sudden that they give the listener a feeling of weightlessness, The Y Axes struggles with prefixes to justify their genre. Their lyrical narratives draw a hopeful picture of a seemingly disintegrating backdrop, transforming social chaos and despair into stories of love growing even at the end of the world.

They've played with local acts Bears! Bears! Bears!, Loudtalkers, Black Cobra Vipers, Guntown, New Year Sun Bear, and Talk of Shamans at venues such as Hotel Utah, Bottom of the Hill, Knockout, and Submission. See them at El Rio for Space Prom on July 16th. Check them out at facebook.com/theyaxes, and hear their debut LP Discopocalypse at theyaxes.bandcamp.com.

Coming of age at the beginning of the 21st century depression has left Y Axes vocalist Alexi Belchere with the sense that the consumer apocalypse has already come to pass, and in the post apocalyptic world, the most valuable commodity is the hope in your heart. Her lyrics are a transformation of social chaos and despair into stories of love growing even at the end of the world.

With a deep respect for strong songwriting, Devin Nelson draws inspiration from almost every genre, finding artistic merit everywhere, from the pop on the radio to the mic'd corner of a dive bar. Devin's tendency to slip creative chords and intricate melodies into even the most straight forward phrases is what earns his songwriting style the title of "Tech Pop".

Keyboardist and engineer Kevin Ferguson is the backbone of the band. Alternately lifting the song up with an unclimbable synthetic wall of sound, or bending and modulating notes with the twist of a knob, Kevin's mad scientist keys put the space in their space pop.

The combined forces of drummer Darryl Kay and bassist Mike Arace build epic driving rhythms punctuated with moments of negaitve space so sudden that it gives the listener a feeling of antigravity before launching back into the beat.
