"Packing Iron with Yellow Roman Candles"

“they do give off a certain heat, a steady passion delivered through an acoustic combination of guitar, piano, cello, fiddle, and even a bit of banjo in the album's stand-out "Tired Song," which is minor and meaningful, delivered by frontman/songwriter Aaron Morse with believable weariness: "The day has come/Just like you said it would."”

"From a clash of influence comes a cohesive sound"

“[Yellow Roman Candles] carve a comfortable groove in the no-pretense Portland music scene.”

"ALBUM REVIEW: “If It’s Right” by Yellow Roman Candles"

As far as I am concerned, Bates is fortunate to be located in the state of Maine for a variety of reasons. Among these are easy access to the mountains and the ocean, really fantastic sushi, friendly people and ample Poland Spring Water. Of course, Maine has long been a bastion of great folk music as well, and, emblematic of this scene, which has produced, among others, Ray LaMontagne, is a new band out of Maine’s city of ships, Bath.

Yellow Roman Candles is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Aaron Morse, and based on their first release, If It’s Right, there is a sense that this band could really make a run at achieving a certain level of national notoriety. The album certainly has shades of LaMontagne’s earlier work. Its gritty and working-class sensibilities leave the listener transported to perhaps a greater understanding of the plight of much of middle America.

It is important to point out that the city that produced Yellow Roman Candles has also been producing ships, notably for the United States Navy, for generations. One cannot help but assume that the surroundings that this band finds itself has been an inspiration to their music.

If It’s Right is a decidedly raw album, which, if given a few listens can really tear into one’s soul. It’s part Springsteen and part Dylan, but certainly all Maine. Not to say that I am surprised, but this simple little album proves that Yellow Roman Candles will one day be deserving of a place among the pantheon of great Maine folk musicians.
