"Ladies' Choice Tonight: The Young Dads"

Last night, we checked out NYC-based comedy-pop band The Young Dads at the Sidewalk Café.

Many of the band’s influences are clear from the start – Flight of the Conchords immediately comes to mind – but their show is highly original. The accompanying PowerPoint presentation only made their songs funnier, and they even broke it down with some hilarious choreography. Jesse Andrews’ bass playing gives their music a funky edge, while Micah Shapiro keeps the rhythm on the Cajón. Dave Cohen, who ran the PowerPoint presentation for most of the show, joined them on stage for the last three songs. Dave’s addition on the keyboard brings a touch of Chromeo to the mix, not to mention a third voice to The Young Dads’ skillful harmonies.

While each member is clearly talented (they are also in the band heylady), The Young Dads are more about the comedy and fun of performing. If you get a chance, we highly recommend that you check out one of their upcoming live shows. They’ll be at Blackbirds in Astoria on August 3 and back at the Sidewalk Café on August 7.

Bio

The Young Dads began in September of 2008 when bassist/songwriter/vocalist Jesse Andrews and percussionist/songwriter/vocalist Micah Shapiro decided to write the funniest, catchiest songs that they could. Taking influences from pop, comedy, and folk, The Young Dads' show is filled with catchy hooks; funny lyrics, personalities, and banter; great harmonies; distinctive instrumentation; choreography; an unforgettable stage presence and an accompanying PowerPoint presentation. The Dads play at many New York City venues (Gotham Comedy Club, EastVille Comedy Club, Sidewalk Café, Caffe Vivaldi, Bar 4, Vox Pop) and travel to do university shows as well (University of Vermont, McGill University, Wheaton College).
