"Singing Cowboys"

With commentary from Ty Murrary

What could be more exciting than competing at the Cheyenne Frontier days Rodeo and setting an arena record?
Chancey Williams, from Moorcroft, Wyoming, has one answer.
Williams placed in preliminary rounds of competition in the rookie bronc riding at the “Daddy of ‘em All,” and qualified for the final round. (This event is open to contestants riding on a Professional Rodeo Cowboys association permit and hoping to earn enough money to become full-fledged members of the association.) An 82 point marking set a new arena record and earned Williams his competition card.
While that was thrilling for the 22-year-old cowboy, it didn’t make him less nervous about an event that was coming up two weeks later.
With a group of his buddies, Williams is part of a band called the Younger Brothers. They have played all over the state of Wyoming, as well as in Colorado and South Dakota. Earlier this past summer, they were invited to open for Country Western sensation Chris LeDoux when he played at Billings in August. Of course, they jumped at the opportunity.
“It was just unreal,” Williams said. “Chris is from Wyoming, rode bucking horses, and sings. He’s everything I want to be.
“I don’t know if I was more nervous riding bucking horses in Cheyenne or opening for Chris. It was the largest audience we’ve ever played for. It was great.”

Ty’s Take:
Chris LeDoux has done a lot for the sport of rodeo, not only with his accomplishments in the arena, but also by what he’s done in the music business. Maybe by Chris giving Chancey this opportunity, rodeo will have another cowboy who brings attention to the sport outside of the arena.

"Band ready for big stage"

Band ready for big stage

The Younger Brothers Band is a working band. A pound-the-pavement, on-the-road type of band that will play at the VFW or the Moose Lodge, at the Beacon Club in Casper or Dewey's Place in Moorcroft, at a street festival or a rodeo.

Even weddings.

They've played 40 gigs since school let out this summer and played about 60 last summer.

Their crowd depends on the gig and the night: It may be older and eager to dance. It may be smaller and more conversational.

But there's one night this summer that they can predict what type of crowd they'll have. A big one.

The band, made of college students from a hodge-podge of northeast Wyoming towns, is opening for Chris LeDoux Aug. 15 at the Metra Park Arena in Billings, Mont.

"It's hard to realize how many people are going to be there," said Joe Kissack, singer and guitarist.

The Younger Brothers Band is Kissack, of Rozet; drummer Travis DeWitt, of Moorcroft; guitarist and singer Chancey Williams of Moorcroft; and guitarist and singer Nick Schofield of Gillette.

They are all 22- or 23-year-old college students - Kissack studies music; DeWitt, criminal justice; Williams, political science; and Schofield is in pharmacy school.

Their music is a mix of old country, rock and southern rock, and even a waltz or two.

“It was just unreal, Chris is from Wyoming, robe bucking horses, and sings. He’s everything I want to be.”
Setting a new areana record with a score of 82, he is well on is way.
