"Country Rock, with Emphasis on the Rock"

Country rock, with emphasis on the rock, Zak Perry tells a rural story with electric guitars blazing in the backdrop.

With an unrelenting beat, “Memphis in May” is an animated piece of work, not quite rockabilly, and not quite country-swing. The song starts out like an old 70’s rock tune, but dives quickly into a bluesy, country feel when the husky vocals shout out the first words, beginning the story of man traveling across the country, longing for that paradise known as “Memphis.” When will he arrive? You guessed it, May.

Claimed to have been written on a bus, the first line of “Memphis in May” gives us a reassurance that this is the case, as the singer explicitly states “.…I’m rolling into Memphis on a greyhound bus.” Memphis seems to make everything right, leading one to believe it really is the promise land, as things will “be okay…I’ll be in Memphis in May.”

The blues feel of the song lends well to the belted out style of the vocals, yet the heavy electric guitar twanging up a country rock feel with mild distortion distracts the listener away from the down home feel of it all. With a better balance of instruments, “Memphis in May” could break through the barrier and be more than okay.

Country-rock aficionados may dig this song but the rest of us may not make it to “Memphis in May.”

Bio

Hailing from Austin, TX, The Zak Perry Band has been picking up steam throughout the southern and midwestern states for almost two-years!! Performing Zak Perry’s original songs along with an incredible collection of classic rock and Americana from the 1970’s, the band puts on a high powered show that you have to see to believe. They are a true party band in the 1970’s Southern Rock and Jam band tradition.

The Music

Although often compared to the likes of Government Mule and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Zak Perry’s original music is extremely difficult to classify by genre. A brilliant blending of Rock, Southern Rock, Blues and Country, the band creates a sound that appeals to a very large demographic. Whether your crowd is college age or middle age, a blues, rock or country crowd ... they will stay, grow, and want to know when this great band will be back.

The Show

Whether it's a one to three hour all original show, or a full night of original's and covers, a Zak Perry Show is high energy from start to finish. With fewer and shorter breaks than most bands, your crowd will get much more music than they are used to. And the band's energy on stage is contagious!! Your crowd will dance from start to finish, even to songs they have never heard before.

Shows can be booked in a variety of formats, depending on the needs of the venue: They will play for anywhere from 1 - 4 hours and perform mostly originals, mostly covers, or any mix in between.
