"Playing with friends"

UPLAND - Former Upland High School students now make up two parts of the local chamber music trio Third Wheel.

Adrienne Geffen who plays the clarinet and Karin Kantenwein who plays the flute have teamed up with bassoonist Rich Ramberg.

Together, the three musicians have formed the new woodwind group and will give their first recital at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grace

Chapel on the campus of the Church of Our Saviour, 535 West Roses Road, San Gabriel.

They will perform three movements titled Bath, Billiards and Bar.

Geffen, Kanterwein and Ramberg have five college degrees in music between them. The three friends now aim to reach their audience through an "unusual instrumentation and youthful perspective." - Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

"Fall Chambers Winds concert highlights top performers"

"These are the stars," music department secretary Jeannie De Vito said.
The Fall Chamber Winds concert performers are hailed as the top performers from the Wind Ensemble. Overseeing the program is acclaimed music department head and chair Jason Chevalier.
The musicians are chosen and formed into duos, trios and quartets. Chevalier said that the dynamics and pressure of performing as a small group develops a "very evident professionalism in these students."
"This concert will be fun with a great amount of variety," Chevalier added.
He credited Maggie Worsley with training the clarinets and Lori Stuntz with the low brass.
James Duran, a second year bass clarinet said, "this performance will stand out as a much more advanced and technical program in comparison to others."
Duran said the night will feature compositions ranging from Bach to classic German folk songs.
The concert will also feature the unconventional professional chamber music trio "Third Wheel" as a special guest. Two members of "Third Wheel" return to work with Jason Chevalier as his former high school music students. The group member's backgrounds are as varied as their musical vision.
Adrienne Geffen, Karin Kantenwein and Rich Ramberg come from premier music programs across the country with repertoires ranging over four centuries, including performances from "The Music Man", "Footloose", "Evita", "The Spirit of Louisiana", and performances with Royal Caribbean International. - Mt San Antonio College Mountaineer

Bio

Brought together by the desire to perform unconventional music, Third Wheel is a woodwind trio unlike any other. With a repertoire spanning more than four centuries of music, Third Wheel expands the definition of chamber music with an unusual instrumentation and fresh, youthful perspective. Third Wheel is Adrienne Geffen on clarinet, Karin Kantenwein on flute, and Rich Ramberg on bassoon. Their friendships span more than 12 years with countless shared musical performances, but none as a trio until the ensemble was founded in 2007. The group is dedicated to seeking out lesser-known works by contemporary composers, and also steps outside the boundaries of classical music to perform works borrowed from jazz, folk and rock.
