"Rock ‘n roll at selectmen’s meeting"

http://www.wickedlocal.com/saugus/archive/x1772959865/Rock-n-roll-at-selectmen-s-meeting

November 24, 2008

Saugus - Local rockers Thirteen Yards to Victory (13 YTV) will be honored with a special presentation at the Saugus Board of Selectmen meeting this Tuesday evening, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Saugus residents Dave Rossi (21, bass), Tom Iannello (20, guitar, backup vocals), Ryan Passariello (17, drums) and East Boston native Vinny Prezioso (20, lead vocals, guitar) have been together since 2005. Since then, they have already played the Van Warped Tour at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, headlined at the Jacob Jarvitz Center in New York, performed on a number of national tours and have recorded at the prestigious Longview Recording Studios under the auspices of acclaimed drummer/producer Kenny Aronoff (Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Ethridge). They recently completed a three song demo with producer/engineer Jeff Yurek (My Chemical Romance, Counting Crows, Godsmack).

The Saugus Selectmen are appropriately acknowledging the Saugus-based rising stars this Thanksgiving week as 13 YTV prepares for a planned world tour in early 2009 entitled, “Rally for the Troops ‘09: America United.”

The local rockers are using their talents to rally for the troops by showing their appreciation and support for many of their peers that have dedicated a part, and in some cases, making the extreme sacrifice in service to the protection of our basic freedoms.

Saugus-Fresh off a sixth national tour, Thirteen Yards to Victory shows no signs of slowing down as the local band prepares to take another leap forward in what has been a whirlwind musical career.

All four members of Thirteen Yards to Victory — lead vocalist/guitarist Vinny Prezioso, 19; guitarist Tom Iannello, 20; bassist Dave Rossi, 21; and drummer Ryan Passariello, 17 — have their sights squarely set on doing whatever it takes to succeed as professional musicians.

Thirteen Yards to Victory recently returned to the North Shore after completing a lengthy tour through the deep South.

Days consisted of Thirteen Yards to Victory getting up when the sun rose to travel along highways in their van to promote an upcoming concert. Band members headed to malls and other places frequented by youths, handing out flyers and providing iPod samples of their songs to spread the word.

At night the band took the stage at clubs to play a mix of pop-punk rock songs highlighted by melody-driven guitars and memorable vocals.

Life on the road isn’t always easy, acknowledged guitarist Iannello. He estimated the band members end up sleeping in the van 90 percent of the time, joking that they might book a hotel room “and take a shower” if they manage to sell a lot of CDs during a show.

But band members agreed the camaraderie from driving hundreds of miles together more than makes up for whatever inconveniences arise.

“There’s no better way to make a name for yourself than to hit the road and perform,” Prezioso said. “We take our music seriously and want to make sure it gets heard.”

When the band isn’t touring they can usually be found practicing at Passariello’s home in Saugus. Prezioso told the Advertiser his band has been rehearsing at least four hours daily since signing a management deal with Balboni Communications Group a few months back.

By all accounts the hard work has paid off in generating an impressive following for the band. Thirteen Yards to Victory boasts an enormous fan base and more than 373,000 profile views on its MySpace page.

Other career highlights for Thirteen Yards to Victory include earning a slot performing one day on the Vans Warped Tour last year and they also won a recording session at the renowned Long View Farm Studio, which has welcomed artists such as the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith.

“I got to sleep in Steven Tyler’s bed,” Rossi recalled of his connection to the Aerosmith front man.

Evolution of a sound
Thirteen Yards to Victory came together in 2005 as a result of several bands breaking up that summer.

Iannello recalled the time he met a fresh-faced Prezioso, who kept asking him questions about playing the guitar.

“At first I was like, ‘Who is this little kid?’” Iannello said. “But after a while he grew on me.”

Before long Iannello, Prezioso and Passariello co-founded Thirteen Yards to Victory and were jamming regularly. All they needed to complete the band was a bassist, a problem solved when Saugus resident Rossi joined as the fourth member.

Three of the band members have local ties. Rossi graduated from Saugus High School in 2005, while Passariello is enrolled as a senior at Saugus High School.

Guitarist Iannello currently resides in Saugus and graduated from Northeast Metro Regional Vocational High School two years ago. Prezioso lives in East Boston and is a 2007 graduate of Boston Latin High School.

Over the years what began as rough yet promising riffs gradually progressed into a tight sound unique to Thirteen Yards to Victory.

Iannello described the band’s sound as a combination of pop/punk rock infused with a heavy edge. Unlike other bands that scream lyrics over chords, he said Thirteen Yards to Victory sings the parts to effectively blend in with the music.

Thirteen Yards to Victory played its first concert at the Gloucester Art Space in December 2005. From there the band started to organize small shows around the Saugus area, renting out local VFWs and YMCAS.

The inaugural tour came during February vacation in 2007, a trek through New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Jersey. The band has since completed five separate concert swings, visiting 30 states in the process.

Prezioso said the quality of the music progressed with each successive tour — a trend noticed by Iannello.

“After finishing five independent national tours we feel we’re on top of the evolution of our sound and of rock music in general,” Iannello said. “We are hitting new heights in our music career daily and our developing sound is epic!”

Future plans
Thus far 2008 has been a jam-packed year for Thirteen Yards to Victory. In April the ban released its second EP, “Reflections,” which has been a big hit with the public.

THE STORY SO FAR: Frontman Vinny Prezioso believes it's easy to see how his Boston-area, screamo-pop five-piece Thirteen Yards To Victory has made it this far. "It's not hard to notice a band who are constantly promoting and have seven tours under their belts while still being very young," he says. Although the senior member of TYTV is just old enough to drink, the group recorded most of their EP Reflections at their own studio.

WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW 'EM: Whether you're looking for pop-punk tendencies, screamo growling or the occasional gang vocal sound, the band-Prezioso, guitarist/vocalist Tom Iannello, synth op Justin Lepore, bassist Dave Rossi and drummer Ryan Passariello-are there to provide it. "Our music is compelling and unique," says Prezioso. "We're solid musicians and we've worked very hard to get where we are." [TJK]

"Thirteen Yards to Victory"

August 2007 issue

Chances are if you have gone to a local show in or around Boston, you have at least heard of Thirteen Yards to Victory. For those of you who haven't heard of them, get out from under your rock and live life.

The band can probably be best described as a mix of bands such as The Receiving End of Sirens, Under)ath, Silverstein, and Motion City Soundtrack, as well as influences from a wide variety of genres. "We have the fun feeling and arrangements from bands like Blink-182 combined with the heaviness and brutality of hardcore and metal bands," says guitarist Tommy Ianello. Their sound can range from melodic sing-a-longs to heavy breakdowns and everything in between.

The band formed in September of 2005 when Vinny (guitar) and Ryan (drums), who were both members of the band Same Old Story at the time, asked Tommy to fill in on bass. After Tommy showed the guys a few songs he was writing on guitar, they decided to change gears and start up something new. The three soon asked Anthony "Styx" Perrin to join the line-up on keys and vocals, and, with the addition of Mike Rossetti on bass, the band was complete. In the winter of 2006, Mike Rossetti and the band mutually parted ways. "There are no hard feelings. We are all still best friends," says Ryan. Mike can now be found shredding on his guitar with his new band, As Good As Dead. After Mike's departure, the band invited former singer/keyboardist of Feeling Brave?, Dave Rossi as a replacement. The line-up has not changed since, and the band is still going strong.

Although this band has only been around for a couple of years, they have already developed quite a local following. Anyone who has booked a show in this area knows that Thirteen Yards to Victory has the uncanny ability to always bring a crowd. This is of course due to their intense live performance, which is sure to never disappoint. It seems like no matter where they play, there are always more than a handful of audience members singing along with Anthony or Vinny or screaming along with Ryan. Not to mention the massive pile-ups that are almost guaranteed every time the band plays "For Me" or the pits that open up for about half the songs in their repertoire. All this combined makes for a hardly ever boring set.

When asked what his favorite song to play live is, dave responded, "My favorite would have to be 'Save the One-Liners'...It's a newer song, and I just love the feeling of it. It is always so easy for me to get completely into it." Tommy, on the other hand, said, "I put everything I have into all these songs...I honestly don't have a favorite. The same way a mother doesn't pick a favorite child; I don't pick a favorite of my creations."

As their fan base alone would suggest, Thirteen Yards to Victory has more accomplishments under their belt than most bands their age. With member ranging from 16 to 20, this band has done more than most mi-20 year old bands can even dream of. In late December 2006, the band put out its first full-length album, Feudal Efforts Make Futile Friends, which was recorded and mixed completely on their own. This album has already sold around five hundred copies not just in New England, but also in states and countries all over the globe. "Getting orders from other countries makes me feel like we must be doing something right. I know we aren't world famous by any means, but I at least feel like we're beginning to make a mark," says Vinny.

"In February 2007, the band extended its fan base and support out as far as Pennsylvania on their tour with their good friends Aislin. This week-long tour made several stops in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. "This was our first time out on tour," says Ryan. "There's nothing more fun than having all these new experiences with seven of your best friends." Tommy adds, "It was great being able to go out on tour for the first time and play in a bunch of places that you've never been to but still being completely comfortable because you're with your closest friends. To me, nothing is ever going to compare to this first time."

It wouldn't be long until the members of Thirteen repacked their bags for the "Southern Hospitality Tour", this time with another local post-hardcore band, As Good As Dead. The tour lasted from June 22nd to July 2nd and reached all the way down to Georgia. "Bothe tours were amazing, but this one had a different feeling. Being so far away down south in the summer, there was always something to do. Some of the shows turned out to be better only because the summertime encouraged a lot more people to come out to each of the shows...Comparably, though, they were both equal in terms of fun."

Barely over a month after returning home from the "Southern Hospitality Tour", Thirteen Yards to Victory plan to head out on tour for their second time this summer. This tour, suitably called "Round 2", is again with their first tour-mates, Aislin, This will be the bands' longest time out - Call Me Magazine

13 Yards to Victory Hope to Hit the Road

By Chris Stevens

If Ryan Passariello is lucky he will not be attending Saugus High School come November. Instead he'll be doing his lessons out of the back of a van while he's on the road with the band "13 Yards to Victory."

At 17 and still a high school senior Passariello is the youngest member of the four-piece band that's been playing together for nearly three years.

It sounds almost quaint---high school buddies form a garage band and dream of the big time. It sounds almost like a high school musical but for Passariello, fellow Saugonian Dave Rossi, Revere's Tom Iannello and Vinny Prezioso of East Boston, they're already living the dream.

On a warm summy Monday Ernest and Colleen Passariello are feeling lucky because the house they bought tucked high on a hill came with a virtually sound proof room in the finished basement. Because that's where 13 Yars to Victory is pounding away on a new tune.

"Once you close the door you really can't hear it," said Ernest, who admits when his son said he wanted to be a musician, the pop/punk genre is not what he envisioned. But he and his wife are also quick to shrug off the sound and simply support their son.

Influenced by bands like Blink 182, Taking Back Sunday, and even the decidely metal band Acacia Strain out of Chicopee, Iannello is the group's Primary song writer.

"I lay the basics down but everyone builds on it," he said.

That is also not unlike how their name came about. An afternoon of word play with everyone kicking in ideas is essentially, Iannello said, how "13 Yards to Victory" was tapped.

"We started with 13-hour drive, which is a lyrics from a song," he said. "We just kind of started playing around with the words---we knew we wanted to keep 13 in there. Someone said 13 Yards to Victory and it was just kind of mutual. That was it."

The band itself came together as many bands do, by association. 20-year old Prezioso had been in a band with Passariello and he already knew Iannello. Having been friends for so long the guys knew they could get along, and even better, they wanted to. Rossi, the oldest at 21, stepped in when the initial bass player didn't work out.

"We felt Dave would stick," said Iannello, adding that it is understandably a tough task for some.

Sticking with the band, for now includes not only traveling in a van full of equipment but also sleeping in it, sometimes for days on end.

The band has already toured 29 U.S. states though Rossi said they have yet to breach Mississippi. All of that touring included riding in the van, sleeping in parking lots and picking up a hotel room maybe once a week so everyone could shower and do some laundry.

It is not, noted the 19-year-old Iannello, for the faint of heart.

"But we figure we're young, we'll give it a shot now and if it doesn't work out then we can go to college later," he said.

However, they are hoping, and their manager, Fred Balboni, of Balboni Communications Group, believes, that their future as working musicians will in fact work out just fine.

"They're so focused," Balboni said. "And you can already see how their music has evolved."

The guys practice nearly every day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and that drive has allowed them to rack up some impressive street cred in three short years. for an unsigned band, they are making a splash.

They have already recorded at Long View Farm Recording Studios under the experienced eye of drummer Kenny Aronoff, who has worked with Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Etheridge and John Forgerty to name a few.

"I felt like we'd really made it then," Prezioso said. "Everyone is paying attention to you."

After winning a battle of the bands contest they were also invited to appear on the venerated Vans Warped Tour, which for Iannello was nearly a dream come true.

"I've been going to Warped Tour every year since I wa sa kid," he said. "To play there---that was big."

Even their Web site, www.myspace.com/thirteenyardstovictory, has attracted some 350,000 hits and they've amassed a fan base of close to 54,000. And their fans aren't all virtual.

"We're starting to see people come (to gigs) just to see us," Prezioso said.

Prezioso attributes the growing fans to the band's hard work to launch their own music through their Web site, meeting and greeting fans armed with iPods loaded with their own music to give kids a listen. The guys know modern technology is their best best friend and they plan to make full use of it.

To cap off their accomplishments the band has a recording deal on the table with a national Indie label and starting in September will stream live every Sunday on a music-based Internet talk show. Keep an eye on their Web site for more details on that venture.

There is also the possibility of a tour in November and a trip back to the studio to record a CD for an actual label next spring.

Bio

Thirteen Yards to Victory (13 YTV) is Anthony DiPerri (20, Vocals, Keys), Vinny Prezioso (20, Guitar, Vocals), Thomas Iannello (21, Guitar, Vocals), Ryan Passariello (18, Drums) and Dave Rossi (22, Bass) of Saugus, Mass., and was formed in late 2005. During its brief time on the music scene, the band has performed during the Boston date of the internationally acclaimed Vans Warped Tour in 2007, has covered 29 states via three independent national tours and has recorded under the auspices of acclaimed drummer Kenny Aronoff (Melissa Etheridge, John Fogerty and Smashing Pumpkins).

Most recently, 13 YTV approached music industry powerhouse Ken Lewis (Usher, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z) to produce and mix their latest EP, American Dreamers. Once the major-label, multi-Platinum producer, multiple-Grammy Award winning mix engineer and musician heard the initial tracks and the intent of the EP, he immediately signed on to the project.

“I first heard the demos that would become the American Dreamers EP and was blown away by the range of talent in this band. Within one band, it’s rare to find two exceptional singers as well as a musical and songwriting force that I am personally envious of,” said Lewis. “If I had this much realized talent at 20 years old, I'd be famous right now. Hopefully I can play a role in making Thirteen Yards to Victory a household name as well as an instantly recognizable sound escaping from your radio speakers. They've got all the raw talent and passion for music, and every time I push them in the studio, they rise above the occasion and deliver.”

13 YTV band members Vinny Prezioso and Dave Rossi are currently in pre-production for a new, internet-based, interactive talk show to be aired on the CBS Digital Radio Network, AOL Radio and Yahoo Radio. Their co-host is nationally acclaimed comedian Chuck Mignanelli. FOX national-local television and WTKK 96.9 FM radio personality Joe Ligotti, The Guy from Boston, is a contributor.

Through the massive popularity of its MySpace Music page, 13 YTV has amassed thousands of fans spanning the globe. The phenomenal Internet buzz created has caught the interest of indie and major labels alike.
