"This Blue Holiday At The Green Room"

This Blue Holiday takes the stage and delivers one of the smoothest sets I've heard in a long time. Consistent and full from beginning to end with a unique sound that's hard to discribe. So hard to describe its near impossible to right this review efficiently enough to tell you how good this local CT band is. - simianfever.com

"This Blue Holiday at Vicious (Sin-e)"

Take fierce, jagged, and disparate parts of Joy Division, GvsB, and pre-RCA Longwave and you've got a band with a dubious name and an arresting sound, and as they play out more and more in the coming months, is sure to turn heads and ears on to their music. This Blue Holiday being on this edition of VICIOUS was kinda a happy little accident. Normally, limiting the night to four bands, we kinda set a precedent with The Rocks playing in November, so when they asked us to play on this bill withy their pals The Information, and especially considering how fucking great TBH is, I had no choice but to oblige and treat ourselves to their set. Quick little story - on IM yesterday with a friend from Nashville, she asked if they had any records for sale - going solely on the link I had on this site and listening to mp3s - now if that isn't a testament to how good this band is as well as the power of this new media, then, I guess it isn't. Ha. Point being, their songs - incredibly polished to a ripe dark smooth yet rough around the edges finish is remarkable - particularly in light of the fact that their from Connecticut! Ha again. Seriously, they would fit right in with the NYC elite if they wanted to, but seem to be doing more than just fine being who they are.

"CD Review"

Hell yeah. This Blue Holiday also uses spacy processed guitars to achieve their sound, but they do a much better job of it. The usic is reminiscent of old Radiohead with simple, melodic, pleasant vocals. The group is based in Fairfield and contains members from local success stories of years past, including The Radiation Kings and The Subcity Project. Watch out for these guys as they develop and grow in the coming months. - Fairfield County Weekly

"This Blue Interview"

This Blue Holiday frontman Ferdinand Daniele was inconspicuously seated at a corner table just inside the door at Fairfield's O Bar, sipping a generously-sized glass of red wine and awaiting his interview.

"It's usually a bit more laid back here," he assured me, as something we guessed to be Shaggy blared through the speakers, forcing us to speak louder than we would have liked. Daniele's Fairfield-based band has been slowly and deliberately plotting and enacting their plan to live and breathe music in a healthy manner. They have one of the most promising sounds around. And though they focus their thrust more on the New York scene, they should be recognized as a product of Connecticut before they outgrow us.

"We get to play on bills with great bands [in New York] and have noticed much more of a solid following [there]," says Daniele. "It's strange, although it shouldn't be, but people in New York actually go out to shows to hear new music and check out new bands. The shows in Connecticut have been fun, but honestly we haven't been playing here too often."

As the name suggests, This Blue Holiday's sound is dark and brooding, and though every band hates their style to be equated to others, it's often necessary in order to convey a rough sonic idea to readers who have never heard them and only have words to go by. So with that in mind, try to envision an earlier, less electronic-sounding Radiohead mixed with a healthy dose of The Smiths, Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure and Joy Division, all of whom are cited by T.B.H. as strong influences. Heavy, deep effects processing is an integral part of the final product, and guitarist Jared Stagg is the mastermind who keeps them sounding tasteful.

"Jared is like a scientist when it comes to effects," says Daniele.

Stagg, Daniele and drummer Van Hartley currently live together as a band in a Fairfield home, and bassist Paul Berti is around often enough to be an honorary resident as well.

"We built a small practice space in our basement where we spend most of our nights [practicing] amongst drinking and playing Twister," admits Daniele, jeopardizing the group's melancholy image for years to come.

Lyrically, T.B.H. is an honest, personal band. Themes of love, loss, happiness, sadness, change, fear and hope litter the lyric sheet, but they're always open-ended and somewhat vague.

"Listening to [the songs], you may not be able to tell exactly how the story goes," explains Daniele. "There's a lot of room for your own interpretation."

Questions about the ultimate goals of the band or what would constitute a success story were skillfully avoided.

"We are very pleased with what we as a group have been able to do and look forward to years and years of making music together," Daniele says. "Maybe at that point you can touch base with us and we'll be able to tell you whether or not we've been a success."

What is clear, however, is that T.B.H. is intent on taking things one step at a time and avoiding pitfalls. They are determined to be playing music with each other for a long time and need time to weigh their options, refine their set and let things grow without being forced.

"We've been talking to some indie and major labels, but we're not too anxious to jump into a contract right now," says Daniele. "We're just focusing most of our attention on writing songs and playing shows. We want everything to happen organically. There's no point in rushing the whole process. If we want it to last as long as possible we can't get ahead of ourselves."

"This Blue Holiday (Demo)"

This four song disc of unsigned recordings (the band insists they are just "demos" but they sound pretty damn good to us...) is generally available for free at shows, but are usually snapped up so quickly by first-time listeners that sometimes it's still a bit of an effort for people to get their hands on a copy. - truthflies.com

"Live - NYC's Lit Lounge Hosts Indie Rock Onslaught"

Regardless of who drew in the largest crowd, This Blue Holiday left with their attention. Connecticut’s best kept little secret revealed it’s dirty guitar callused hands with the first two minutes of This Blue Holiday’s set. Combining the pop sensibility and sincerity of U2’s music with the mystique of Joy Division, This Blue Holiday stunned the audience with tight and dreamy guitar riffs and heart stabbing lush vocals. Caught a bit off guard, the audience quickly moved in, danced, smiled and screamed for more.

"CMJ, Day 1"

As the crowd tumbled out of the main space up I wandered into the tap room and stumbled upon indie rock outfit This Blue Holiday. Apparently this Bridgeport, Connecticut band has been on a bit of hiatus, but you wouldn't know it watching them perform. Granted, their particular brand of effected indie rock isn't super unique, but these dudes have much more musicianship and care for their music than most of their peers. Watching Jared Stagg move his hands over the fret board so effortlessly is pretty mesmerizing, and the rest of the band is interesting to watch as well. If you're a fan of U2, Interpol, or The Strokes, you should probably check these dudes out.

Bio

As a quartet from outside of NYC, This Blue Holiday collides raw sounds with beautiful atmosphere to create melodies that reverberate in the ears of the lonely hearted. Influenced by 80s rock under the shadow of hair metal and the pop rock of the 90s, This Blue Holiday’s compositions consist of straight forward rhythms that are complimented by complex guitars along with locking bass and drums. Evocative of perennial favorites like Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, Radiohead, Coldplay and U2, This Blue Holiday's live shows are sonically dense. The partnership which is This Blue Holiday began in 2001.

This Blue Holiday has shared stages with, Piebald, Mates of State, Snowden, RaRaRiot, Mae, Plain White T’s, The Adored, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Liam and Me, Benzos, and The Blue Van.
