Thisell

In 2010 Peter Thisell brought together a group of musicians to record an album in an abandoned school in southern Sweden. The school served as both recording studio and home for the band’s families, friends and animals. This gave the band the space to take time with their debut recording, spending a week rehearsing together and perfecting the songs before recording the sessions live. As with the recordings, Thisell have also taken their time releasing the album. Only now, almost four years after the recordings were made, is this extraordinary album ready to be released. It is well worth the wait. The band’s remarkable, slow burning take on Americana is one that will appeal to anyone with the slightest interest in country inspired alt-folk and particualrly fans of Bonnie Prince Billie, Wilco and My Morning Jacket.

There are many reasons why this album works so well: Karin Wiberg’s violin, Peter Thisell’s Neil Young-like vocals and David Odlöw’s accordion to name but a few. The main reason, though, is the strength of the song writing. Peter Thisell’s lyrics are a series of reflections on being an individual trying to love and live with others. The music meanwhile, written by all of the musicians, is clearly the result of a group of musicians who have taken the time to perfect these songs.

This combination is particularly effective on the album’s opener A Town of Windows. With the chorus “I’ve come a long way to be flying so low, a shadow/Too many nights now on my own,” the lyrics set the tone for the rest of the album. These are backed perfectly by a forceful piano riff, Odlöw’s mournful steel guitar and Viberg’s melancholy violin.

Another highlight is Could You, a tender love song about two people “alone and afraid,” wondering if they could fall in love with each other. This song brings Peter Thisell’s picked acoustic guitar to the fore and ends with a beautiful duet between Wiberg’s plaintive violin and Odlöw’s gentle accordion.

The album’s highlight though, is Over years, Over Time. The song begins with a dramatic guitar line that evokes memories of spaghetti western showdowns. This could not be more appropriate for a song about a standoff between a couple attempting to reconcile long-standing differences. The guitar lines give way to a soft, repeated piano phrase and an increasingly prominent violin; perfectly conveying a sense of growing tension and regret. This is song that deserves to reach a wide audience.

At just thirty-six minutes long, I leaves the listener intrigued and wanting more. Fortunately, recordings have already been made for the follow up II, part two of a planned trilogy. Let’s hope that it doesn’t take quite so long to get this album released. - Alfred Archer

THISELL debut hit me without warning. When I put on the vinyl, I didn’t expect such a beautiful record. it was like to listen to a very old record, that was already there for all these years and was waiting just for me. These quiet songs songs have all the usual ingredients a lot of other folk songs have. I can’t say what it is, that makes them so special and present. Maybe it’s the fact, that the songs were made in a short period of time. Thisells friends came by for 10 days and that they played some music for pure joy. Listen to these songs feels like sitting in the living room with Thisell and his Band playing live beside me. They started a long long time ago, before i was there and they will play on with or without me. The gentle drums pushing the songs slowly forward, the guitar gets some tacts to play a little bridge, the violin plays quietly a heartfelt melody, Thisells nasal voice follows quietly and sometimes even his bandmates start to sing in a small choir. The Details

In the summer of 2010 Swedish songwriter and musician Peter Thisell assembled a group of musicians to record an album in the old village school of Lur in southern Sweden. A big red wooden building that was taken out of use in the sixties functioned as a studio and home for the musicians, their friends, families and animals during a week in August.

The intention was to make a record the way they were made ages ago, and to do so in close collaboration with the musicians. The studio was set up in the old classroom and sessions were made completely live.

In an array of cables, microphones, instruments, coffee cups and wine glasses work was hard but joyous. Letting everything take time and not pushing the songs forward but rather waiting on signs from them to follow.

Taking breaks for meals, swims in the lake nearby and games of coronne the record evolved slowly and gently. Letting the songs lead the way and playing them until you are in a trance-like state where you push yourself musically as well as emotionally until you have reached an intensity between the musicians so strong the only relevant comparation that comes to mind is making love.

Three years have passed and now THISELL appears on JellyFant Records, a small vinyl only label in Oberhausen.

Much has happened since the recordings. The members of the band scattered across Sweden after the recordings and it wasn´t until this summer they met up again, this time to record the follow-up to the debut album that lay before you.

One might think that things sometimes reach a standstill; nothing happens, nothing evolves, nothing changes. And although much of what happened in 2010 is still present much has also changed. People grow, dynamics change, relations deepen.

After playing and living together for another week this summer it is clear. We all fight our own battles; some of which we win, others are lost. When working together for a mutual goal you rise above yourself. In a process truly collective you keep your back straight, head high and heart wide open.

We hope you will hear the love, honesty and hard work that went into these recordings. It is a week of our lives we shall never forget.

Som att stirra på en porlande bäck.

Thisell är låtskrivaren och frontmannen Peter Thisell samt en samling musiker som redan 2010 bodde och spelade in I tillsammans, under tio dagar i en gammal byskola. Gjorde en Plura i grupp således. Först nu släpps albumet på CD. Det som kom ut ur det här projektet kan närmast beskrivas som soft-americana. Musiken låter som det är att stirra på en porlande bäck, fint för en stund men sedan något sövande. Stirrar man dock tillräckligt länge träder ett nytt känslotillstånd in, inte så att man upptäcker fler saker, man vänjer sig snarare vid det porlande ljudet och vaggas in i en form av ro.

Det är estetiskt snyggt, till och med supervackert. Rena och raka "live"-inspelningar från skolsalen, lågmälda mer än lo-fi-mässiga. Problemet är att det då och då slår över, blir vänt, musiken når ibland inte upp till styrfart. Emellanåt ljuder det också för gement, och därmed anonymt. Det betyder dock inte att det saknas stora stunder. Could You måste vara ett hommage till Erik Enocksson och har fantastiskt fiolspel samt dragspel som låter utpräglat folkmusikaliskt. Inslaget av dessa instrument och sättet de spelas på skänker en synnerligen tilldragande säregenhet till ljudbilden.

Ett finmejslat debutalbum som antagligen låtit mer spännande om Näcken också lurat vid vattenbrynet. Det sägs att uppföljaren II ska bli mörkare, så det finns alla möjligheter till ännu större stunder. - Emil Viksell

"Sind wir uns schon grün oder müssen wir erst noch drüber reden?", fragt Peter Thisell zu Beginn seines Auftritts das kleine, aber aufmerksame Publikum, das an diesem historischen Sonntagabend in die Kölner Lichtung gefunden hat. Nein, viele Worte sind an diesem Abend überflüssig, denn die sehnsuchtsvollen Texte des Vordenkers und Namensgebers der schwedischen Band und das zerbrechliche Pathos, das er gemeinsam mit seinem Begleiter, dem auch als Solist aktiven Björn Kleinhenz, verstömt, sprechen für sich. Wenn die beiden mit geschlossenen Augen und 20 Zentimeter vom Mikrofon entfernt inbrünstig "Lay Here" singen, weiß man, dass diese Lieder von Herzen kommen. Noch bis Ende November ist das etatmäßige Sextett in reduzierter Besetzung in Deutschland, Holland und Dänemark auf Tournee, um alte und neue Stücke zu spielen.
Die Songs von Thisell tummeln sich hörbar im musikalischen Umfeld des akustischen Neil Young und in den textlich in den emotionalen Niederungen eines Townes Van Zandt, doch ähnlich wie Damien Jurado, an den Peter gleich in mehrfacher Hinsicht erinnert, gelingt es dem Schweden, den altbekannten Mustern seinen eigenen Stempel aufzudrücken. Das gelingt ihm vor allem mit einem ordentlichen Schuss nordischer Schwermut, auch wenn einige der vielen betont langsamen Songs in den Duoversionen dadurch schon fast etwas zu desolat klingen. Zwischendurch steigen Tempo und Lautstärke allerdings, und das sorgt für willkommene Abwechslung.

Auch das Instrumentarium wechselt. Peter gibt mit Akustikgitarre und Stimme die Richtung vor, während Björn abwechselnd an einer Stromgitarre Marke Eigenbau, Banjo und Mundharmonika für verschiedene klangliche Farbtupfer sorgt. Zu Beginn des zweiten Sets spielen die zwei sogar eine Nummer, die so neu ist, dass sie noch nicht einmal einen Namen hat. "Aber a-Moll und G kommen drin vor, das ist schon mal ein guter Anfang", scherzt Peter nach der Show. Als besonders ergreifende Highlights entpuppen sich derweil "A Town Of Windows" aus dem aktuellen Album "I" und das derzeit noch unveröffentlichte "Amounts To You" aus dem kommenden zweiten Album, bevor Peter die Zugabe solo bestreitet und dabei nach einer Stunde in folkigen Sphären mit dem abschließenden "Bad Time" sogar noch auf das Country-Terrain eines Gram Parsons wechselt.
Denn auch wenn die hippie-esk anmutenden Melodien praktisch aller Thisell-Songs so klingen, als wären sie schon 1968 in Kalifornien geschrieben worden, unterstreicht die Tatsache, dass sie auch im Köln des Jahres 2014 dem Publikum nahegehen, ihren zeitlos-schönen Touch. Was sagte gleich die Dame vorne links so treffend, die zwar des Englischen nicht so wirklich mächtig war, aber Peter trotzdem ihre Begeisterung nicht vorenthalten wollte, über das Konzert? Mit diesem Album kanalisiert der Schwede Peter Thisell seine Liebe für den unbeschwerten Sound der Westcoast-Singer/Songwriter der späten 60er und 70er. Um das Bild (beinahe hätten wir gesagt: Klischee) des freiheitsliebenden Hippies perfekt zu machen, lud er seine potenziellen Mitstreiter im Sommer des Jahres 2010 in ein altes Schulhaus im südschwedischen Lur ein, um ihnen dort in heimeliger Atmosphäre (Musiker, deren Familien und Tiere, alle unter einem Dach!) seine neuen Songs vorzuspielen und sie im Kollektiv weiter zu veredeln. Der Sound ist wohlig warm, die Stimmung betont harmonisch, und Akkordeon, Geige und mehrstimmiger Gesang unterstreichen den handgemachten Charakter der Songs, die allesamt live mitgeschnitten wurden. Entstanden ist so eine Sammlung altmodischer, oft nur so dahingetupfter Unplugged-Americana-Songs, perfekt für den Herbst und doch zeitlos. - Simon Mahler

Berührende Schwermut aus Schweden

Unlängst an einem Freitagabend, an einem der letzten Hasenschaukel-Abende vor der Sommerpause, war Peter Thisell in der urigen Bar in Reeperbahnnähe zu Gast. Der schwedische Sänger und Gitarrist spielte mit der Violinistin Karin Wiberg wunderschöne, sehr melancholische und schwermütige Songs, die aus tiefstem Herzen erklangen. Auf der dazugehörigen Platte „I“ versammelt Peter Thisell einige Musiker mehr für die Ausarbeitung seiner Lieder, die melancholische Stimmung beherrscht jedoch auch das Album. Mit Piano, Bass, Gitarren, Violine, Akkordeon und gelegentlichem Schlagzeugeinsatz, alle Instrumente den Kompositionen angemessen dezent in Szene gesetzt, begleiten Torbjörn Arvidsson, Per-Ola Eriksson, Martin Hjort, Björn Kleinhenz, Petter Nilsson, David Odlöw, Jonathan Larsson und Karin Wiberg Peter Thisell auf dessen herzergreifenden musikalischen Reise. In „A Town Of Windows“ fängt zusätzlich noch ein Harmonium die wehmütige Folk-Atmosphäre und Peter Thisells verwunschene Stimme auf.

„Bad Time“ erhält einen countryesken Americana-Twang, während „Could You“ durch die harmonischen Backing Vocals und das schaurige Violinenspiel Wibergs an Konturen gewinnt. In „Into Hidden“ schmachten sich Violine und Akkordeon an und mit „Lay Here“ gelingt dem Kollektiv das endgültige Meisterstück auf diesem an schönen Songs nicht gerade armen Album. Ganz in der Tradition eines Gram Parsons oder Ryan Adams barmt sich Peter Thisell durch seinen sehnsuchtsvollen Text, ein feierliches und doch fragiles Pathos entfaltet sich, ein Song zum Dahinschmelzen und Mitleiden. Piano und Akkordeon verbreiten bei „My New Best Friends“ eine zurückhaltende Pariser Schwermutsnote, die in „Over Years, Over Time“ wieder vom Violinenspiel Wibergs ausgeht und eine dunkle, nebulöse Seite Thisells offenbart. Das abschließende „Towards The Warmth Of Life“ manifestiert in dramatischen Zügen die erhabene Melancholie, die den Songs dieses Albums inne wohnt. Es sind elegische, traurige, aber höchst emotionale, sehr bewegende und berührende Songs. - Gérard Otremba

Filled with honest and beautiful songs, the latest album from Swedish musician Peter Thisell is a delight from beginning to end. Mainly recorded live with a group of friends the songs have a cinematic feel, a wide ranging Americana sound that is rich and warm drawing the listener in to the collection with ease. Opening tune “A Town Of Windows” is full of mood and emotion topped off with Peter's haunting voice, a whispering violin adding tension to the tune. With a country groove “Bad Time” is a simple song played beautifully, whilst “Could You” is a slow and delicate song that drifts like a falling autumn leaf.

With a running time of just 35 minutes, this 8 track collection is a perfect late night one more drink before we go to sleep album, the happiness of the musicians plain to hear throughout its organic sheen and grooves with the piano-led “Over Years Over Time” being an absolute highlight in a melancholic, put your arms around me kinda way, the whole album rounded off with “Towards the Warmth of Life” another gorgeous and softly spoken tune, the title of which seems to sum up the album perfectly. - Simon Lewis
