The band is called This Piano Plays Itself and have made a name for themselves around Atlanta with their stellar live performances, something definitely believable considering their big sound. The Georgian quintet have a guitar-driven shoegaze sound that reminds me of Explosions In The Sky or Slint, with billowing movements and more layers than Trident’s latest marketing gimmick. I’m not sure if you’ve got a set of superb speakers or rock out your tunes on ear buds, but “Who We Were” jams out like something epic on a stellar set of headphones. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to experience This Piano Plays Itself in person soon.

Hailing from Atlanta, This Piano Plays Itself certainly has a sound that defies pigeonholing. There’s no shortage of reverb-heavy guitars and layered effects, yet amid complex swirling soundscapes there are elements of simplicity and space, a testament to the group’s musical maturity.

Although six songs sounds like a short set, This Piano is deft at creating shorter, almost miniature epics. That’s not to say that their songs go on too long. Instead, the band is capable of making every second count, squeezing a plethora of interesting changes and shifts into their music. The four new songs are still without titles, but sound is what counts. Musically, they’re a little more rock ‘n’ roll than the stuff on As The House…, and also more centered on complex rhythms and bottom end. This Piano stands at a crossroads. It’s hard to tell exactly where the right path will lead, but that’s the beauty of it all.
