Thom & the Tomcats

BandAlternativeFolk

It's a bit gritty, and a little bit pretty. Maybe we're an acquired taste (and maybe we're not). We focus on all aspects of the band...creating dynamics, spending months gruelling on lyrics until they're just right, capturing the perfect sound for us. We like our sound, and hope that you do, too.

Biography

Thom Coombes is a singer/songwriter and recording artist from St. John’s. Enthused by the aesthetic of home recordings, he started recording his own material in 1999 using a boombox with a built-in mike and moved on to a four-track cassette, and has been developing his recording skills ever since. In addition to self-producing 10 albums of his own work, Thom has recorded numerous artists in the St. John’s scene, and been a guest artist on other groups’ albums with his guitar, sitar and harmonium. Thom & the Tomcats is Thom’s band, and “For Lovers & the Lonely Alike” is their first commercial album. They are working on a second, aiming to be released later this summer.

A Tourist Town in the Winter

Written By: Thom Coombes

Been packing forever, I’ve never ready to leave.
Time came on quicker than I could believe.
Then I wonder, what am I to do with these?

I’m a tourist town in the winter,
You’re a city that never sleeps.
I’m a tourist town in the winter,
There’s nothing here for me, but memory.

Old photographs, and other things from the wall;
If you took them from me I wouldn’t notice at all.
But when I tuck them away, I fret and I stall.

I’m a tourist town in the winter,
You’re a city that never sleeps.
I’m a tourist town in the winter,
There’s nothing here for me, but memory.

You were going through the motions, and I was only there.
You’re a broken record, I’m a broken record player.
We talked of nothing, pretending to care.

I’m a tourist town in the winter,
You’re a city that never sleeps.
I’m a tourist town in the winter,
There’s nothing here for me, but memory.

Burning Bridges, Burning Boats

Written By: Thom Coombes

We tried to find a different kind of space and sound.
We drank a lot of wine, waste a lot of time, just hanging around.
Now I sleep to the sound of downtown, come look out my window;
The cheers and jeers from too many beers, coming from the crowd below.

You can burn your bridge, you can burn your boat,
You can stay, or you can go.
But if you do, then I hope that you don’t
Try to climb, crawl, swim back or float.

Trying to pay back what I never had, trying to get back in the game.
I’m not saying what everybody’s playing, but I lost it all the same.
It’s better behind you than inside you, I got you beside me.
It’s cold and bitter in the middle of the winter, better get a cup of tea.

Now I walk through the snow like I don’t know that it’s even there.
You can give a damn about the sun and the sand, but I don’t really care.
My face disappeared behind a beard, and I grew out my hair.
I had my grandfather’s coat, a cough and a cold, but it’s that time of year.
