Thomas Cunningham

BandRockSinger/Songwriter

“Fans of Jason Mraz and G. Love will recognize the style and appreciate the wit—and fortunately, Cunningham comes off more like a smart-aleck David Lowery than a laid-back Jack Johnson, especially in tempo and attitude.” - The Nashville Scene

Biography

Thomas Cunningham's 2004 debut “The Bottle of Wine EP” made an impressive and head-turning introduction for the 20 year old singer / songwriter. Thomas, hailing from Northern California, received an enthusiastic response to this CD from the top 200 CMJ reporting radio stations, generating significant attention at 185 of them.

With his second release, simply titled “Swell” (out june 28, 05), Thomas has teamed up with other local hot-shot musicians to form the “Locofocos”. Thomas Cunningham and the Locofocos have generated a completely fresh look / listen to acoustic rock sounds with nods to Nick Drake, Jack Johnson and Ben Harper by fusing them with a lyrical pattern influenced by Digable Planets and The Roots. Thomas adds to this by explaining, “I'm a really big fan of the way bands like Digable Planets have been able to weave cool hip hop influenced lyrics with an instrument based band, so the new songs are our own blend of acoustic rock with a lyrical twist!” The album also offers up small doses of soulful pop melody found in No You Can't and for rattlesnake country guitar riffs check out Harvest

Tower Records is featuring “Swell” in the listening stations of all 88 US stores for the month of July, 2005.

Long Goodbyes

Written By: Thomas Cunningham

Hey everybody, have y’all lost your minds? Haven’t met another gentleman in quite a long time? No pleases, no thank you-s, no opening doors, seems like all the gentleman jumped ship, become assholes and whores. No respect, expect disrespect, its eclectic,
make everything sound so hectic. As if the rat race wasn’t won, by society’s coming undone. I’m tired, not stupid, reputation, not lucrative, enough I guess, no, enough not yet, well, emotions writing poems, hide the rhymes, constantly change time, talk about lies, loved and lost, long goodbyes, styles change and so did I, so did I, long goodbyes, long goodbyes. Change the subject to love, come so close the smell hangs in your lungs, Haven’t died trying, can’t keep from prying, how’d you do it once before, amidst, Assholes and whores, assholes and whores, assholes and whores. Emotions writing poems, hide the rhymes, constantly change time, talk about lies, loved and lost, long goodbyes, styles change and so did I, so did I, long goodbyes, long goodbyes. Funny you get tired of daydreams, and midnight screams, getting your heart pulled out with a tractor beam. Hurts just as much or more as the first time, the last time, the worst time,
Stylistic, artistic, aristocratic, fanatic, stopped a few steps short of just gosh damn fucking fantastic. Work of art, straight from the heart, heard it all before, shook you straight down to the core, leaves you gasping, and grasping, and thinking you wanted more. I’ve heard it all before, yeah, I’ve heard it all before, yeah, I’ve heard it all before, I’ve heard it all before, if I haven’t heard it, I’ve heard it all before. Long goodbyes, yeah, long goodbyes, yeah, long goodbyes, long goodbyes, long goodbyes, say a long, say a long, say a long goodbye.

Swell

Written By: Thomas Cunningham

Take it or leave it, she said, leave it at best, I don’t believe in no coincidences. She talks so quiet, can’t even tell, she moves those hips, those lips, it makes me swell with love she moves those hips, those lips, it makes me swell. With love, with love, oh hell with love. Supposed center of intellectualism, if one could call it that, I’m sure it isn’t. Quiet spread across the grounds, death dirties the pulpit now, side with the right, wrong we’ll be, take a knife an’ please, take a seat I’d say. Take it or leave it, she said, leave it at best, I don’t believe in no coincidences. She talks so quiet, can’t even tell, she moves those hips, those lips, it makes me swell with love she moves those hips, those lips, it makes me swell. With love, with love. Take that all from me, oh and, try to call me free, oh an’ strip me all I know and then turn to let me go. False ripples in all the intellectual pools, fathom the facts that turn talking heads on their stools. Schools corrupt the mind and waste my precious time, oh, where’s the value, value when you just don’t need that kind, I’d say. Where’s the value, value when you just don’t need that kind? Take it or leave it, she said, leave it at best, I don’t believe in no coincidences. She talks so quiet, can’t even tell, she moves those hips, those lips, it makes me swell with love, she moves those hips, those lips, it makes me swell. With love, with love. Carry my kindness,
everywhere, carry my strength in its success we’ll share. Bode to carry only one son, sworn to follow and his will be done, amen, amen, amen, and he said all men.

Harvest

We’re all living in a life we can’t have, spending our paychecks on beer just to laugh. Sadness, and blandness, and blind repetition, get my ass out of this rat race competition. Oh, send me away, to blue skies and beaches, where all of my dreams just aren’t always barely out of reach, and, well fantasy she says, and ecstasy she begs, coming so close to finally getting ahead, come on. Hatched a plan to brand myself, be a man who stands for stuff, but I don’t know what, and I don’t know when, we’ll change for the better and, change all men. Art for art sake, coke for a nose break, hate to be late because everything’s money and money decides fate, well, easy for you to say. Everything’s money and, money is time, everything’s money, they say money’s sublime, yeah, stop and let it roll, take a hit and let it take its toll, can’t follow your verbs your months your days, I just don’t get what you’re saying. We don’t want you coming back here, we are so full of your hate and your fear, give me something to change, we will change, strangers faces have a tendency to appear in the rain. Pain is that you coming back again, yeah, I told you and I, oh, we share we no friends. Reluctancy to change, revelin’ in rage, rebellion’s coming on and it’s goin’ to change the face of things. Some say we’re too political, at least over analytical, but you just can’t ignore treating the world like it’s a whore. Scared I see the people, staring through their peephole, skeptical of the man but they don’t know where they stand. Thinking the world’s about to explode, left right but where do we go, I say stand your ground, believe only what you know, believe only what you know. Oh I know you know because I saw it in your eyes and ya’ll felt it in your heart. Oh you know that feeling will never die. Feel like I’m 20 years old, going through a mid life crisis, got a girlfriend who’s busy deciding which Tom’s nicest. Got a whole world to feed, on just three grain rices, and all anyone’s got to say is “well fuck that’s just how life is.” Well fuck life in general, and anything edible, I’ve lost my appetite for strife, and everything federal. I see us all playin’ along, drinking the Kool-Aid straight from the bong, and if it’s news to you, here’s news for ya, we all got it all wrong. I’ve seen life in our cities, we all think it’s so pretty, if I could just get my hands on something just a little bit glitzy. Glitz and glam, uncle Sam, if anyone asks it was out of our hands. Well here we go they’re straight handing it to us. Only what you, only what you know. Oh believe, I’ve been stumbling on things to come, and, I believe, there’s more to this, more to this for you and. I’ve been stumbling on things to come, and, I believe, there’s more to this, more to this for you and me. You and me, more for you and me. Wrong and right, right and wrong, laughter hereafter so it’ll never be gone well, plans of mine, dreams of hers, everything for everyone that no one no one deserved. Oh, everything for everyone that no one deserved, oh I know you know it because I saw it in your eyes and ya’ll felt it in your heart you know that feeling will never die.
