"Coal Mine Winterthur"

dium entgegenkam.

Thomas Diethelm

http://20thcentmusic.blogspot.com/2004_10_01_20thcentmusic_archive.html

In the previous version of this blogspot, I had a rant about Swiss nylon-string guitarist Thomas Diethelm – at the end of August of this year, I removed my ‘archives’, and my Diethelm blog along with it. Rather than just dig it out and re-post it, I thought I’d write a fresh blog about him.

I first heard of Thomas Diethelm from a very intense old music friend, Philip Page. It was at the beginning of “Compact Disc Time”, probably 1984. I guess I thought that when CD’s started, it was going to be all about re-issuing albums onto CD, and I hadn’t really taken into consideration how it was going to work hearing “new music” on CD.

So, from the record distributor I worked at, I ordered a box of “Valleys In My Head” by Diethelm/Famulari, probably from Holland or Germany. I ordered them at the suggestion of Philip, and didn’t think anything about it. They were expensive, the wholesale was probably $16 or so.

When the box arrived, I bought a copy, and suggested this title to my few friends who had already purchased CD players in 1984.

What sprang forth from this CD is almost indescribable. Thomas Diethelm is (as previously stated) a nylon-string acoustic guitar player, and Santino Famulari is a most dexterous keyboard player. Their combination makes for dazzling listening – with Diethelm singing in his own ‘wordless’ language. Everybody who got this CD from me loved it – but that wasn’t a great number of people. Let’s just say that his sound is best described as being ‘super-clean digital delay’ acoustic guitar – played inventively. This is a man who understand digital ‘delays’!

In pre-internet times, it was so difficult to find out about European music. I had no idea how many other records this man had released. I knew that he had a ‘solo’ album on Can’s label, “Shaved”, which was produced by Irmin Schmidt, Can’s venerable keyboard player – but I don’t think I initially associated that with the Diethelm/Famulari CD.

Long story short: I mail-ordered two other Diethelm albums from Switzerland, at a rather premium cost – I confess I found it irksome that I was trying to embrace “CD” and the artist that I wanted seemed to only have LP’s! So, $50+ for 1 each LP’s of “Diethelm/Famulari” and “Valleys In My Head”. It was only then that I discovered that the 2 songs at the end of the “Valleys” CD were found on the 1983 “Diethelm/Famulari” album! Anyway – I strongly recommend these LP’s (and the CD, if you can find it!).

In 1987, I went to Europe on vacation and found another Diethelm, this time on CD: “Penguin In Love” – by The Thomas Diethelm Band. I wonder what happened to Mr. Famulari? All my internet searching only turns up that he had something to do with Swiss harp player Andreas Vollenweider! But “Penguin” has some great material on it, “Heavy Nylon” etc.

And for the better part of a decade, END OF STORY.

Enter: The internet.

Time did not dim my love for “Valleys In My Head”. I continued to ‘Johnny Appleseed’ it to my music friends, with all who hear it singing it’s praises.

Knowing that Mr. Diethelm had worked with Irmin Schmidt of Can, I sent an email to the Can website, asking if they knew how I could contact Mr. Diethelm – I wanted to write to him and tell him that I loved his music. I received a response from them, I write him a snail-mail letter…and several short years later, I got an email from him!

Well, not exactly from him, but from his girlfriend (who spoke better English than he did!) – she was coming to Southern California…would I be interested to meet her?

My brain just about exploded when I found out that there were MORE Diethelm albums; a debut from 1978 “Didi L’Amour”, and several more after “Penguin” – “Big Shake” (’89), “Memory Games” (’88)! These last two albums feature vocalists…I think I like the female vocalist a bit better than the male vocalist, but the instrumentals are still my favorites. “Didi L’Amour” is on a tiny Swiss label, and it is an amazing album – you can really see how he arrived at “Shaved” (his 2nd album) after hearing his debut album.

I also learned ‘what happened’ to him. He recorded and prepared an album in 1990, “Sailing On The River”, but it remains unreleased – the mode of the music had changed and ‘nobody was interested’ in releasing his CD. I’ve heard this album, and it’s easily the equal to his albums from ’88 & ’89 – wonderful stuff. There is also a “Best of” CD that got released, “82-89”.

After the 1990 album didn’t happen, Thomas became known for his smoked fish. That’s right. Fish. The most talented guitar player in Europe (if not the world) is known for his fine quality smoked fish that he sells in the ‘markt’ in Zurich, Switzerland.

But within the last year, I have heard that Thomas sent his guitars to be ‘re-conditioned’, and that he has checked out all of the new digital delay equipment. So we may get to hear some new mu - www.20centmusic.com
