Der beste Freund des Menschen
Männer und ihre Hunde. Meist etwas, das länger als vier Jahre hält. Treue Gesellen, diese Vierbeiner. Stets an ihrer Seite, geben immer den letzten Knochen. Bellen, weil sie nicht beißen wollen. Wollen an der langen Leine gelassen bleiben, weil sie sowieso zurückkommen. Herrchens Gefühlslage: wie ein verirrter Hund, wie ein begossener Pudel. Und irgendwann die Frage: Wer ist Hund, wer ist Mann? Visagenkonvergenz!
Schon beim Vorgängeralbum "...that great october sound" drückte der Norweger Dybdahl ganz kräftig auf die Tränendrüse. Aber was er in "Stray dogs" an emotionalem Tiefgang in seine Musik gezaubert hat, das hinterläßt eine ganz und gar aufgewühlte Seele. Das zweite in Deutschland veröffentlichte Album (in Norwegen sind es deren drei) klingt auf der einen Seite ziemlich dick aufgetragen. Hier noch ein Pianogeklimper, dort noch ein angehauchtes Glockenspiel. Jeder feinste Klang hat seine Berechtigung. Im ausufernden Opener "Rain down on me" wird dies gleich mal auf 6:22 Minuten dokumentiert. Gospelartiges Gejaule auf hohem Niveau, klagende Wehmut mit tiefen Timbre. Es folgt mit "Cecilia" eine Hommage an eine Dame. "Here I am, fleshing bones": Verliebt bis auf den Knochen. Wie dieser Song erst mit einem sanften Gitarrenakkord startet und dann nach den ersten Gesangsspuren plötzlich das Tempo steigert, das treibt einem Tränen in die Augen.
Thomas Dybdahl ist mittlerweile in Skandinavien ein gefeierter Songwriter. Und das im Alter von 24 Jahren. Sogar der norwegische Kronprinz Hakoon samt Mette schwört auf seine Klänge. Die blaublütige Begeisterung rührt vielleicht auch daher, dass Dybdahl nicht in gänzlich abgetretenen musikalischen Pfaden trampelt, sondern sich um musikalische Innovation bemüht. Soul, Slow-Rock und akustische Momente - aber dies alles in einer charmant eigenständigen Mischung. In "Pale green eyes" braucht es eine Minute, ehe nach Xylophongeklimper und Frauengeflüster endlich mal die rote Leine gefunden wird. Das dann aber richtig. Laut, leise, laut. Thomas Dybdahl, der Lautstärkenbezwinger Thomas Dybdahl. Bei "The willow" gibt es den puren Soul, bei "Stay home" die tränenreiche Ballade. Und in "Honey" hustet er gar mitten im Refrain. Wie wunderbar!
Was "Stray dogs" so stark macht, erkennt der passionierte Songwriterhörer spätestens bei "Either way I'm gone": Thomas Dybdahl hat eine wahnsinnig prägnante Stimme. Pluspunkte gibt es zudem für die Variation, mit der Dybdahl einen jeden seiner Songs starten läßt. Gut die Hälfte der Lieder beginnt ohne das bei anderen Songwritern zur Verpflichtung gewordene Gitarrenintro. Stattdessen Pianosprengsel, eine Suche im Labyrinth der Töne, ehe eine Melodie gefunden wird. Wie ein verirrter Hund, der ja am Ende auch immer wieder beim Herrchen vor der Tür steht. Mit den Vertriebswegen von Musik ist es ja immer so eine Sache. Zwischen Künstler, Fan und dem gemeinsamen Wunsch nach weltweit uneingeschränktem Zugriff auf die Werke der Begierde stehen immer wieder die guten alten Geldfragen. Norwegian singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Thomas Dybdahl has so far sold close to 140.000 albums in his homeland.He´s recieved rave reviews for both his albums and his sold-out tours (he tours both as a solo act, and with his band ..the great October sound) in Norway and in Europe. The past year he has also been involved with writing songs for other artists (Maria Mena & more), producing film soundtracks, and contributing to many different projects. He is also a member of the new Norwegian "super-group" The National Bank, featuring members from Jaga Jazzist and Big Bang.
Thomas released three albums in two years (The "October Triology") and is currently writing and recording his fourth album, due to be released in the second half of 2006
His albums are being released throughout Scandinavia and Europe (except UK, still looking for a good licensing deal...) as well as USA and Canada. Distribution and licensing partners includes CCAP, The Recall Group, Glitterhouse, Copenhagen Records and Bertus.
BIOGRAPHY
Norwegian Grammy Award Spellemannsprisen and Alternative Award Alarm winner, 24-year old Thomas Dybdahl, is definitively one of the most talented Norwegian singer-/songwriters emerging from the new Norwegian music scene.
The debut album was released in Norway 1st of October 2002. It includes 11 songs which have been practically written, produced, played and recorded by the man himself. He provides the vocals, the guitar, the bass, the organ, the harmonica as well as other instruments on the record. The album was mastered by Scott Hull (Miles Davies, Uncle Tupelo, Bruce Springsteen, etc) in Classic Sound Studio, New York.
Most of the tracks were conceived in New York, autumn 2001. On this trip he collaborated with Mike Daly (Whiskeytown), Edie Kuhnle (Cat & Edie) and P.K. Ottestad (Getaway people, Robbie Williams). The result is a melancholic stroke of genius which is easy on the ears and introspective without succumbing to platitudes and naïveté.
Dybdahl is an extraordinary artist, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. Let the music soothe your mind are the lyrics on one of his songs, and that pretty much says it all.
- The first radio single From Grace, A-listed for 14 weeks on (Norwegain Public Radio) NRK P3 and for 10 weeks on NRK P1.
- The album entered the sales chart in Norway, and half a year after his release peaked at # 8.
- He Won Spellemannsprisen 2003 (The Norwegian Grammy Award) for best Pop artist, Alarmprisen 2003 (Alternative Grammy) for best Pop Album and Edvardprisen 2003 for best Pop Album.

His second album, Stray Dogs, was released in October 2003. The album was written in New York and at other exotic locations where Thomas can go and find the time and space to write. Once again the reviews where overwhelming, the tours has been sold out and the album (sold 30.000 by january 05) and the singles off the album has done great. He was nominated for two prices at both the Spellemann and the Alarm Awards again this year. This time he was also nominated for best video in both awards, as well as best male artist.
Thomas Dybdahl released his third and final album of the October Trilogy (Some Day You´l´l Dance For Me, New York City) in Norway 18. October 2004. The response has been overwhelming: The album entered the sales charts at #1, and sold to Gold (20.000) in one week. The reviews have been fantastic and his new tour was sold out (with extra dates added in three cities).
In four weeks the album sold close to 30.000 copies, by february 05 it was pushing 45.000 copies and the album has spent 18 weeks on the Top 40 charts so far.
A Lovestory, the first single off the new album has received most radioplay of all his singles so far, being playlisted in a broad range of both national and local radiostations. In february 2005 the video entered the Up North charts at MTV at #1.
Thomas Dybdahl has played both Popkomm (Cologne and Berlin) and SXSW (Texas) twice, By:larm (Trondheim, Kristiansand and Stavanger), Spot and Roskilde festivals (Denmark), Quart and Öya festivals (Norway) in addition to sold out tours of Norway.
