"Strange Company"

Australian songwriter Thomas Vecera has an interesting sound. The backdrop sounds very Springsteenish, but the vocals -- I'm not sure what to say about them. They take a while to grip you, but after a while they too start to sound like Springsteen, at least enough to make the song work. He's got a good sense for dynamics, and his vocals never overpower the music. The backdrop, meanwhile, is given the right amount of time to build in intensity before the song reaches its zenith. The song plays out at only 3:40 or so, and thus requires a few consecutive listens to fully sink in. But this is a winning sound, that's a certainty. Give this one a listen, you won't regret it.

"The Review - Dallas, TX"

Indy unplugged? A flash of Bowie crossed with Young? A whole montage of old school memories mixed with today's real emotions...is this EMO? Wow, it's like a plethera of useless questions, the only one I can answer is that I really liked this stuff. Really. Man, I can't begin to make all the Duran, Duran references, the shades of sounds I heard at the Armadillo World Headquarters back in Austin, or even the icons I saw bloom out of Cardi's here in Dallas in the late 70's and the early 80's.

I remember sitting ther watching Bono with a child perched upon his shoulders as he and U2 wailed away the beginnings of a truly iconoclastic career there at Cardi's, and with maybe...just maybe, just a bit more energy or feeling I hear this guy turning the corner. I've never had the pleasure to see Thomas perform, but I have the distinct impression I wouldn't soon forget.

True enough though, it is seldom that a musician with roots in Austin, Texas, has little to say, add to that the foriegn mystique such as Bono did with his Irish roots, and Vecera's Australian background makes perfect sense. I could do the whole BIO thing on this guy,but I feel that you just might have enough fun on your own there, just do yourself a favor...get in on the groundfloor with this guy, you won't soon regret. It's a cool feeling to look back a few years and say to yourself or an audience, "I saw that guy when..."

Enjoy.

Bio

The Broken Splendour is the latest project coming from Melbourne based singer/songwriter Thomas Vecera. The group is rounded out by Zach Watson (bass) and Steve Bourke (drums). Their new folk/indie pop sound has garnered much attention not just in Australia but also back in Thomas' native US prompting them to prepare for their new recording 'If You Were Velvet' which will be co-produced and engineered by local engineer Mitch Kenny (Missy Higgins, Good Charlotte and Xaiver Rudd to name a few).

Thomas' most recent album 'Strange Company' was recorded by local producer Scott Kingman (James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite). This mostly acoustic based set of songs continues to set Thomas apart as one of Melbourne's most original and unique songwriters.

Now living permanently in Melbourne Thomas and band will set forth performing at local festivals this summer (Festival of the Sea, Sustainable Living Festival, Thin Green Line Festival, etc) while still promoting his three previous albums ‘Another Night Somewhere Else' (2002) and ‘Welcome to Yikesville’ (2004) and 'Strange Company' (2007), all of which provide an artful blend of new folk/pop and alternative song writing that is familiarly reminiscent of billboard hits spanning more than three decades.

Thomas grew up just outside of Houston, TX but quickly made his way into the Austin music scene where he fronted bands that saw local and regional success playing famed clubs like Steamboat, Babes, Saxon Pub, and Hole In The Wall. Teaming with producers Mark Hallman and Stephen Doster on a 5-song EP, Thomas co-written fan favorite, Lucy, a haunting fairy tale of a young girl who finds her way in a world stacked against her, found regional radio play on KLBJ Austin.

After eight years of playing to crowds in Austin, Thomas moved to Los Angeles to gain broader exposure while recording his debut album. Promoting 'Another Night Somewhere Else', Thomas played Hollywood venues including The Roxy, 14 Below and The Gig and gained a loyal and significant fan base. In 2002, Last a Light Year off of Another Night Somewhere Else was a featured download on MP3 Spain.

The Broken Splendour, cleverly sing songs of love, longing and life, sometimes even dealing with dark subject matter, with an airy groove that makes people want to sing along almost instantly. 'If You Were Velvet' will be out mid 2009 and will almost certainly make its way into your list of favorites.

“…a haunting and powerful presence weaving sinuous bits of complex storytelling with flowing melody…”
