Three Quarters Hazel Biography

A show not to be missed. Music always to be heard.

It all began at The Bondi Hotel, Sydney. It was a balmy night, locals, tourists and backpackers milled about the room, waiting for Cherie to play her set, solo. As Cherie welcomed the packed room, heads quickly turned to listen to this voice of happiness. As she played her first song, people from the backroom stood up to investigate this sound and the entire audience were transfixed.
Her songs of sadness were delivered with an incredible twist of happiness, you just had to smile and be happy.
On that night, Josh Oshlack was in the audience, a humble bass player with djembe tendencies. They met after the show, got chatting, got jamming and realised the strong musical connection that exists between was….well, it was strong. The band, Three Quarters Hazel was formed.
Their acoustic set grew over the following six months, performing weekly gigs around Sydney, until it was decided to find a drummer, to lift this musical energy to new heights. Grant Colquhoun was found and what a find.

Cherie’s contagious smiling, her high energy performance and incredible voice must be experienced live to be believed. Funky dance moves, bells on ankles…… This girl’s got a whole lotta soul!!!
Josh, who plays bass, djembe, percussion and curls, brings so much life to the stage, together with Cherie they work off each other, taking songs to great heights but always so connected on stage. If you haven't seen this man rip it up on the bass and then switch back to djembe all in a funky solo, then you ain’t seen nuttin.
And Grant, he is the man with the beats. His smooth and precise drumming give Three Quarters Hazel that final dash of spice that makes people rise to their feet and always ask for more......

For the past year and a half, Three Quarters Hazel has been gigging hard all over Australia. A successful tour up the East Coast from Sydney, via Byron Bay to 1770 in Queensland, saw Three Quarters Hazel playing at Woodford Folk Festival. The tour down to Melbourne for a full 10 days captivated audiences at every show.
They have also taken a liking to performing at Private functions such as weddings, bar mitzvahs, 40ths, 60ths, and anything in between. Three Quarters Hazel also prides themselves in offering their music to charity events. “We all can make a difference in this world and one way we do that is through our music. We are blessed with our lives and we want to share our music with everyone”, said Cherie.

It has been a massive year for Three Quarters Hazel. Here are just a few of the memorable stories from this ongoing journey.

• Cherie won a singing competition on the national radio station Triple J and won four tickets to meet James Brown backstage before one of his shows. One of the band member comments were “He has such nice shoes.”
• Three Quarters Hazel was invited to play for the Sierra Leone Commonwealth Games Team at their welcome lunch for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. “We began to play some African rhythms and the entire team just began dancing and joining in on the music. It was incredible” Josh Oshlack
• Played a Charity show to help raise money for people who are homeless with mental health issues. Unknown to the band, Jimmy Barnes and Johnny Diesel, two Aussie legends, made a guest appearance to help out on the night and play a song for the cause. Three Quarters Hazel were honoured to share the stage with two great musicians.
• Invited to play at the Sydney Opera House for a world Sports event with MC Reason, a well respected, Aussie Hip Hop artist from Melbourne. Josh was heard to say “That place has a huuuuuge ceiling”.

A much anticipated Live Album will be released in December 2006. This is their first album and understandably it is a live recording. This band is about live performance, about transforming the audience into a state of happiness, engulfing them with heart felt lyrics, well rounded songs that take you on a damn nice adventure.
The album ‘Three Quarters Hazel – Live at The Basement’ is unique, in that it hasn’t followed the standard path of a safe, studio album. Their music is spontaneous and often Josh and Grant are not sure where Cherie will take them. Fair dinkum.

After the Album launch, Three Quarters Hazel will be playing at Peat’s Ridge Music Festival, just outside of Sydney over the New Year 06/07.

May the adventure continue…
