"Thronechild's Digital EP is reviewed by Insidestl.com"

Thronechild's get-away is not a beach, but a basement studio that is cozy enough just for them. Nothing out of the ordinary resides in the studio, instruments, amps, chords and recording equipment lay scattered around the room. But once Alexx picks up her mic, Thomas starts wielding his sticks, Adam begins picking out a baseline and Steve strums out a riff, you can hear the hunger and drive that most new bands sometimes lack.

The sounds of Cee – Lo Green's latest single “F – You” can be heard from the doorstep. Alexx's vocals pierces through the bricks that hold the house together. The sound of a therapy session is underway, this is how Thronechild finds release from their daily grind with the world around them.

The four individuals that make up Thronechild all had completely different music paths that lead them to the place where they're at now. You'll never ever guess whose VMA's performance influenced Steve, the freestyler who prefers to have a guitar in his hand instead of the mic, to start a band: Britney Spears. After seeing her performance, he at the age of 23, picked up the guitar, thus creating Thronechild. He at times will reach back to his hip hop roots when writing lyrics for songs.

Song Break: Thronechild released a studio EP for downloading, and it's free. I sat in the middle as the band geared up to perform their first song off the EP “Original.” I saw Steve's hip-hop braggadocios, freestyle attitude exude from the fingers that danced up and down his guitar. He walked around the studio basement as if he was on stage in front of a large audience.

Adam is one of those guys that stays to himself, but as Steve and Thomas were answering some of my questions, Adam sat back, picking out chords on his bass, giving the room a serene feeling. Adam started out playing the guitar in a band back in high school. But turned in his guitar for a bass after being inspired by the bassist in the band. I don't want to give away any secrets, but, on their upcoming album, Adams solos on the song “Prozac Nation.”

Song Break #2: When you hear the opening of “Raggedy Ann” the second song off the EP, it takes you to another place in the musical universe. Adam slinks over his bass guitar picking out each note. Still giving off the laid back cool attitude that gels so well with the group.

Thomas had music around him since he was knee-high, following in his uncle footsteps he picked up the drums. His style is rooted in Gospel, Reggae and R&B, he's been around the music biz for years.Thomas uses his drums as a form of release. He'll tell you though “I'm burnt out on playing other peoples music.” Joining Thronechild allowed for him to stretch his talents all around.

Song Break #3: Continuing through the EP you make a stop at “Mockingbird.” Thomas, get's ultra ill on the drums. Ripping through the drums like a Tornado flowing through Kansas. You can hear the many many years of experience coming through the speakers.

If you ever seen a girl driving around St. Louis singing to her favorite fan, her steering wheel, or you frequent the karaoke bar and heard a girl sing “I'm Just A Girl” by No Doubt. Chances are you might have encountered Alexx, the newest member of Thronechild. She got her musical start at Penn Station, singing an Alicia Key's song, while washing dishes, she was unaware that dish by dish her voice would soon become the voice of Thronechild.

Song Break #4: Ending out the four song EP, “Contradiction” comes together like a finale. Alexx voice gives the song a 90's alternative feel. She has a “I'm cute, but I'm going to give it to you raw and uncut,” type of voice.

You can expect an album in the future, downloadable for all to hear. Also expect some an upcoming show. As you wait for Thronechild's album and concerts, fill your curiosity with the 4 song EP on Thronechild's site.

Bio

Thronechild is a group of artists from St. Louis dedicated to exploring their own style. Each part of the band brings their own spin to the the songs resulting in a blended high energy groove driven sound. By tackling subjects like life, love and politics, Thronechild is no pop act, however their delivery of grooves and hooks ensures a memorable experience. As true DIY enthusiasts, every song, recording, photo and video is forged by the bands own hands.

Alexx Hasty, the newest addition to the group, handles much of the songwriting and singing duties for the group. With no formal training, Alexx stumbled upon her natural singing and writing talent by studying the songs she heard around her everyday. Very soon she realized she had to get her own music out and began to write and develop her own sound. The sound you now hear is reminiscent of old time radio with an edge. Alexx also is an active artist pursuing painting and graphics. She develops many of the graphic ideas for the band and has sold several canvas paintings.

Steve Prane is the bands in house guitar operator handling both rhythm and lead guitar duties. Steve began his musical roots in hip hop as a fan and lyricist where he honed his songwriting style in basement sessions and local open mics. Discovering classic rock, alternative and punk guitar driven music late in the game after graduating college, the guitar took hold of him and he never looked back. As a founding member of Thronechild, the evolving sound has always been evident in his playing. Steve handles some songwriting duties as well as production of all recorded material for the band including the videos.

Adam Retherford, the second founding member and bass player, is a large component of the bands unique sound. Heavily influenced by Primus and funk, he is not just a 4 on the floor root note bass player. Adams style fuses melody and rhythm in a bass context which rounds out the Thronechild sound. Adam developed his stringed skill set by starting on the guitar, however, he soon realized the bass was his instrument. It felt natural and so did the non-traditional style he soon developed. Adam contributes to the direction of every song during the development and exploration of new material.

Thomas Fowler is the rhythmic backbone of the band providing a wicked back beat for the varying styles. He has played drums since the young age of 3 and it shows. His laid back style adapts seamlessly to the music and provides the necessary edge for the songs. Thomas has spent his life behind drums as a part of backing bands for several touring R' n B and Reggae artists.
