Ruby Frost

That picture right there of the cute girl holding the giant 42Below vodka bottle and the winning ticket is Ruby Frost a.k.a Jane de Jong, a.k.a the winner of the MTV 42Unheard competition. Frost was picked from a panel of judges (including Gin Wigmore and for some reason Shelton Woolwright) out of 357 acts that entered the competition months back. She’ll now go to New York to play the CMJ Music Marathon, get recording time, a single release deal (with options) through Universal, a feature in Real Groove magazine and a list of other swag. It’s tough to know where to start with this since a month ago I put all my bets on her to win this thing – I guess sometimes I’m actually right. On stage and especially on paper, Frost is the logical choice – she’s extremely marketable in a country that hasn’t exploited pop music all that much recently (in part I guess because we don’t do pop music all that well) – and she’s genuinely talented whether watching her on stage or hearing her recordings.

The night started off a little shaky with opening indie-rock act The Frisk doing their best to amp up a crowd that was mostly happy to enjoy the open bar. Their show was predictable with their songs sounding like a slew of other indie it-bands but there was nothing that separated these guys from the pack. They list their influences as The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon, which shows their youthfulness, but ultimately it didn’t add up to much. It doesn’t hurt to know your history kids. There was good music before 2001.

And that was the gist for The Pink Pound Experience too. Despite reading their bio which told me to “take a listen, it’s the future…” there were only elements here that reflected how late they were to jump on the indie-rock bandwagon. The rest of their bio is every bit ridiculous: “We got together in mid 2009 and practice hard to deliver and mental product that may only be sold on the top shelf, alongside penthouse, mayfair and euro boy.” There were rumours that these guys got a ridiculous amount of votes from fans that got them into the top six but on stage they barely clicked. Maybe they were just having a bad night but a friend of mine joked that they wouldn’t even had made it into the Rockquest.

Then shit got interesting. Rap Authoritar (Joe Buchanan) is the brother of Eric Ultimate a.k.a that dude from Coco Solid, and he had people in the crowd wondering if he was serious or if he had us sucked into a huge joke. Not that he couldn’t rap or anything (even though it was impossible to hear what he was saying) but no one seemed to know what to make of him.

For Da Grind

For Da Grind were the biggest surprise of the night. There’s a possibility that there was guitar shredding involved but this was an R&B group taking their favourite influences and applying them to make an impressive set. There are officially six members but the stage was filled with a couple of others as well (one vocalist even quipped that half the crowd was now on stage). Compared to everyone else in the competition, they seemed like the wildcard (I guess because they sounded unike anything else) but they easily stirred up the crowd, which the other bands failed to do. There was also a group of girls standing at the front that screamed for them the entire way through their set. Somebody get these guys a deal.

Out of all the indie-rock bands Tiddabades were easily the best. They were animated and showed that they had been doing this long enough to know how to play a set like this and impress. The Wellington four-piece put on a great closing set that I’m sure impressed the judges but it wasn’t to be their night. Amber Peebles took on the emceeing duties (how good is she looking lately?) and introduced Kidz In Space who filled in the, um, Downtime, with a set that opened with Phoenix’s 1901 and went to show why these guys will be sticking around for a long while yet.

Ruby Frost

But the glory belonged to Ruby Frost, who made it well known from her charisma that she deserved to be the one that took this thing home. Her band was tight, and from the get-go where she opened with a new song called Hazy, she blew away most of the competition and remained on point throughout her performance. I don’t know how she’ll fit in at a festival like CMJ but that’s still a year away so who knows what she’ll produce by then. The judges made a great decision picking her – she’s young, beautiful and when she let the short but pounding epic Goodnight ascend from this tiny melody into something a lot bigger than the demo sounds, you can see and hear all the potential that this girl has. And that’s the thing with this competition – it was judged on who had the most potential to take this opportuni - Hussein Moses

"Tiddabades A 'highlight band of Camp Low Hum 2010'"

'highlight band of Camp Low Hum 2010' - Under the radar

"Under The Radar Interview"

Interview with Tony from Wellington band Tiddabades.

Been around since?

Craig and I picked up our respective instruments with Timmy around April 2008 as a three piece playing house party's.. around 6 months later gained a guitarist.

Current line up?

Craig Rattray – Drums
Tony Surrey - Bass + BV's
Luke Kavanagh - Guitar
Timmy Hutchison – Vocals

Where are you based?

Currently.. Wellington, New Zealand.

Musical history?

First and only band for Craig Tim and I, Luke was in U2 but they had there musical differences so sadly had to part ways.. seriously though i think he was in some muck around cover bands in Brighton, England.

Luke saw us play at one of Timmy's house party's.. after he got the most drunk I have ever seen anyone get, he came along for the ride. He is a talented musician.

Tell us about your name – it used to be Batman Tiddabades right? Why the change? Also how is your name pronounced?

That's correct.. when we first started we were just playing around, not taking the band serious at all. Batman was a sausage dog that I grew up with when I was 7.. basically the coolest name for such a funny looking dog. Tiddabades is a colloquial term Craig and I (along with our friends and school) said if something was dope. It makes sense to us.. I'm not sure about other people.. but I love that, having something your close friends understand but confuses the shit out of everyone else.

We dropped the batman as were more serious about our music now, it signifies a change of pace and a new direction.

It's said wrong 95% of the time and it makes us laugh. Its the end of it people don't get.. they pronounce the last 'e' too much.

TIDDA - BAD - ES ( not eeees that's why we added the Spanish 'és')

Tiddabadés!

How would you describe your sound?

I feel we're slowly getting more depth with our sound, to start off with it was in our nature to sound punchy and dancey with a touch of darkness. I guess in many ways your a product of what you yourselves listen to, so when you combine in our case, four people, who listen to an array of music, you gain a different sound.

What are you listening to at the moment?

We all listen to so much and we'd each answer this question differently.. but I myself, Holy Fuck, Nirvana, O. children, Deerhunter, The Horrors, Wilberforces, 1995, Does it offend you, yeah. Die Die Die, Foals, The Strokes, Joy division, Grizzly bear, Death from above, Late of the pier, WU tang.. to name a few.

Recently i was speaking to a friend of mine, who described the term ' shark music'. Its when your walking somewhere and you throw your earphones on and feel like you can destroy anything around you and your in your own world, making everyone else seem insignificant.

I like that feeling music gives me.

What were you listing to in High School?

I myself listened to.. Big L, Nirvana, WU tang, Prodigy, Blood hound gang, and Brittany spears.

What is your writing/recording process?

We jam loads, recording onto a laptop and take out the bits that sound okay to us and work on them and try to feel them out.. sometimes well be having a shit jam then all of a sudden were all getting stiffys.

Your Dream Collaboration?

Real old Metallica.. I can't stand them now but back in the day of 'kill em all', and something else like David Bowie.

Actually I don't even know what you mean by this.. did I answer it correct?

Any releases coming up?

Debut self titled EP (Tiddabadés), Currently sorting the finishing touches/ printing. Should be out and about in September . We record with our friend Cormac in his studio in pram which he calls 'cardboard box studios' he has amazing patience, and knows what we are trying to say without even saying it.

We were going to throw a demo CD together but we have recently started discovering our sound more accurately so decided upon an EP release.. it takes time when every ones working real jobs.

If you could have any original vinyl release in the world what would it be?

Vinyl is amazing. The Beatles. Ramones. Joy Division.

Of all the instruments you own, or have owned, what is your favourite?

That I own, I'd say the boss over drive pedal. I enjoy Luke's slicer. The kaoss opens new doors also.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learnt musically in the last year?

How to play an instrument.

What has been your favourite show to date?

For me I thing our best is on its way.. I enjoy playing at mighty as our friends are always there, but i love playing on the floor at San Fran. Stages seem to disconnect you from the crowd.. i enjoy being in amongst it at eye level. But i do understand that people actually want to 'see' the band.

If you could share the stage with anyone (band or person) who would it be?

Die Die Die, 1995, Wilberforces, Villany, Tina Turna, to name a few.

The future holds…?

Release of our debut EP, followed by playing Auckland then heading south to Christchurch, - Under The Radar

"Auckland Blog on Tiddabades - Pennie Black"

Originally named Batman Tiddabades (after a sausage dog & a colloquial term among friends), the band ditched the first name when they decided to get serious. They've recently released their debut EP and it's really good! Highlights include 'Right Here' & 'Colours' - both of which have been played on the show.

Tiddabades recently played at Cassette Nine with 1995 & Pussy Glitch, & are embarking on an eleven date tour of Japan - Pennie Black
