"A barrel full of Tigers and Monkeys"

Ultrababyfat co-founder Shonali Bhowmik still considers Atlanta her home, but she's been making a name for herself in New York City since relocating last year.

Before going on hiatus, Ultrababyfat finished off a club tour with actor/comedian and former Atlantan David Cross -- a rockin' road trip documented on a recently released DVD by Sub Pop titled Let America Laugh -- and Bhowmik has continued to share bills with other comedians.

"It's a blast and the combination of music and stand-up has become really fashionable in NYC," she says. "A comedian like [current tourmate] Eugene Mirman is totally rock 'n' roll. He is crazy. Rather than perform at the 'Laugh Off' in Macon or wherever, he really should be performing at the Earl, with all the crazies that go there."

The wacky Mirman -- along with Ron Lynch and Brendon Small, cast members of Cartoon Network's "Home Movies" -- will offer comedy, music and short films at Saturday's performance. Tigers and Monkeys, Bhowmik's N.Y.-based band, will open the show.

A bluesy extension of her pop-oriented Ultrababyfat material, the project stems from her backlog of songs written since her move to the Big Apple. The songs were tested right here in Hotlanta during a solo show at the Earl last March.

"I bought a place in East Atlanta before I moved to NYC with hopes that someday I could make a life in both NYC and Atlanta," she says. "What would be a good word to call someone that lives in both cities? An Atlorker?"

Bio

Tigers and Monkeys comes out of New York City and is the solo project of Shonali Bhowmik (Ultrababyfat, The Neverlands). A foot stomping gal, Shonali's childhood inspirations took shape in the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Earth, Wind, and Fire and continued to be stylized by witnessing the era of Van Halen, The Talking Heads, The Replacements, and The Police. To create the powerful sound Shonali envisions, she is accompanied by a wild cast of band members as Tigers and Monkeys
