Put On Your Tiger Suit

November 6th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Comprised of throat singing, world music, a dash of rock and a Didgeridoo, Guelph’s Tiger Suit are returning again to the eBar November 9th. The duo (Renee Cross & Curtis Maranda) are performing alongside Sub-Stance and Lion Detective Club and took a moment to talk with me about the show.

SH: Tell me about the show at eBar – why eBar?

TS: Ebar is one of the most exciting venues in the Guelph area. Not only is it a great space that’s centrally located, it hosts some amazing bands and the management is top notch. We had a great time when we did our CD Release party there in May and are really excited about playing there again.

SH: I like that ‘Tiger Suit’ and ‘Lion Detective Club’ are playing the same show. Just wanted to point that out.

TS: We just feel bad for the other big cats that are left out. Sorry pumas, ligers, cougars and lynxs. Actually, I think some cougars will be there.

SH: Who does Tiger Suit draw influence from that your fans may find surprising?

TS: We think everyone is influenced by everything they hear, either consciously or subconsciously. Consciously, we’ve been influenced by Radiohead, Bjork, Tori Amos, Autorickshaw, Ghostland Observatory, Chopin and about a thousand other artists.

SH: What would be your advice to new artists who are just coming into the music community?

TS: We consider ourselves pretty new on the scene, but advice we try to follow is to remember it’s all about the fun. We just focus on making music we like and trying to get better at it.

SH: What can fans expect of a live Tiger Suit show?

They can expect to hear some exciting new fusion, to dance their faces off and to become a better person. (Just joking about the last part.) Seriously, people can expect to have a good time.

Bio

Tiger Suit, (Curtis Maranda and Renee Cross), is a duo from Guelph, Ontario, who have been winning over audiences across Canada with their unique sound and energetic performances. Curtis and Renee are both graduates of the York University Music Program, where they studied piano, composition, improv and world music.  Their music is an integration of rock, electronica and jazz, blended with bits of various traditional world elements and lots of looping! The result is soaring melodies, rich polyphony, contagious dance beats and crazy synth arrangements: a highly original and exciting new sound.  Renee and Curtis often switch instruments, creating variation and diversity between songs. Throughout their many performances in various venues and cities across Canada, Tiger Suit has received nothing but excitement and enthusiasm from audience members of all ages, event organizers and fellow musicians.  As well as live performances, Tiger Suit is supported on multiple university radio stations and CBC 1.

April of 2011 saw the release of Tiger Suit's self titled, debut album. Their follow-up album, "Tourist Attraction" was released in 2014.  Tiger Suit is currently recording their third album.
