I asked him about “knowing all the criminals.” Sanders said he checks all the neighborhood blogs. He was reading a story on Lake Effect News about a mid-afternoon shooting at Wilson and Broadway last February, where a woman got caught in gang crossfire while waiting for a bus with her baby.

Sanders grew up at 4848 N. Winthrop, where he was raised among the Gangster Disciples “with the GDs hat banged to the right.” He went to Arai Junior High School, before it became Uplift, and graduated four years ago from Senn High School.

"Chicago hip hop tributes Derrick Rose"

Derrick Rose is the biggest name in town right now and with the success of the Bulls as we start the playoffs, you know Chicago hip hop was gonna rep for the probable MVP. Sure enough, we have a couple of new songs dedicated to the Bulls superstar to peep above. The first was actually released during the season as TimBuckTu rhymed over a sample of the Bulls’ intro music, much to my delight since I have been wanting someone to chop it up and add a hip hop twist to it. The end result was a pretty solid tribute to D-Rose, citing many specific games and happenings in the season to that point (EDIT: now set to a highlight mix). The other is a new download released today as Yung Berg linked up with MarVo for their track simply titled “Derrick Rose”. It has a street appeal to it on top of more allusions to D-Rose so be sure to check out both above and vote on which one you like the most in the poll below! Also be sure to check out Game 2 of the Bulls-Pacers on TNT tonight at 8:30 CT and maybe you’ll catch Maks G and myself in the UC crowd, yuuup! I’ll be reppin’ the Bench Mob!

Bio

It’s not everyday that you find a 23 year old rapper who studies Aerospace Engineering at one of the nations top university engineering programs. As a student at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Timothy “TimBuckTu” Sanders childhood dream was to become an astronaut. He’s on track to complete his bachelor’s degree next year and receive his private pilot’s license. To say that he is no stranger to hard work would be an understatement!

TimBuckTu aka Tim Million, a Chicago native, moved around a lot as a child. He says his love for music was the only thing that he could depend on because it was always the constant in his life.
This allowed him to see things from a different perspective which encouraged his strong sense of self and community.

When asked about his style of music he simply says, “My style is diverse, it’s like a melting pot! “ Influenced by artist such as Nas, Jay-Z, Common, Talib Kweli & Andre 3000, TimBuckTu knows he has what it takes to be successful in the music business.

After releasing his latest mix tape titled “Tim Million,” and receiving support from followers, his success became even more evident. One single in particular, D-Rose for the MVP, an ode to hometown basketball hero Derrick Rose, took off and gained international attention. The song received over 100,000 downloads within only a few weeks of its release. He also has performed with artist such as Big Sean, Machine Gun Kelly, J. Cole, Waka Flacka and Yo Gotti just to name a few. He even had the opportunity to perform at the 2009 Rock The Bells Tour which feature some of hip hops elite.

TimBuckTu has come along way since 2005 after creating his rap group Talk Of Chicago but there’s a lot more ground to be gained. “I haven’t accomplished my goal,” he says, “I have a ways to go.” But there is no doubt that along with him receiving his pilot’s license, he and his music career are sure to take flight!
