"www.folking.com review of The Best of Tim Edey"

Kaleidoscope may not be the coolest word to use at the moment thanks to John Bercow, Speaker Of The House Of Commons but it happens to be the way I view Tim Edey’s colourful rise to fame within the ‘folk’ community. Having recently been the recipient of the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for 2012 as musician of the year no less Tim’s prowess as a multi-instrumentalist has long been admired by those of us fortunate to have shared his company at sessions or performing on stage. Edey’s unbelievably technical flawless musicianship is displayed on this ten year retrospective proving just how comfortable he is in his own company or with that of his equally talented associates including Michael McGoldrick, Seamus Begley and Brendan Power. Opening with the almost ‘harp’ sounding “Out On The Ocean” thanks to his intricate nylon strung guitar playing this leads nicely into the jazz-styled “Independence Hornpipe” with an astonishing display of digital dexterity on melodeon. As if being a fantastic musician wasn’t enough he also displays a talent for tune writing with his own wistful melody “Little Bird” where he’s accompanied by Sharon Shannon. Anyhow, enough of the name-dropping and on with the jaw-dropping…if it’s digital dexterity that floats your boat (by the way, Tim’s based in the sea-side town of Broadstairs…and proud of it) then I can thoroughly recommend this CD. "Eileen McCabe IRISH MUSIC MAGAZINE"

"Many adjectives have been used to praise Tim Edey's prowess as a musician and more often than not the word 'multi' precedes them... Each track on The Collective is a mini-performance within itself and evokes swift emotive changes in tandem with a technical dexterity that is second to none. Talent oozes from every aspect and nuance of this album from the composition to the musicianship to the vocals and the common thread in all of these is Edey himself. Highly recommended." The Best Of Tim Edey
(Gnatbite Records, no catalogue number)

Tim has risen to the heady heights this year of winning two folk awards (Best Duo with Brendan Power and Musician Of The Year, and guesting with The Chieftains on their celebratory 50th anniversary tour. Now comes a really wonderful compilation CD, showing Tim in all his glory with an impressive roster of musicians, such as Sharon Shannon, Ross Ainslie, Michael McGoldrick, Brendan Power, Lucy Randall and Jon Sanders, with the beautiful, stirring voice of Seamus Begley. From Out In The Ocean Guitar Jigs and Little Bird (which Tim composed for Miss Shannon) to the bonus track, Old Lang Syne, and the Dawning Of The Day Samba, this album is a sheer delight. For God’s sake, buy it! - Folk Wales

21st Century Boy picks his best
The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Musician of the Year winner gathers together here 18 of his best and most popular tracks from 2001 to date. What could possibly go
wrong? Not much at all, of course. Even the ever-contentious use of unreleased bonus tracks is skirted here with an almost- unrecognisably jazzy mid-set version of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ which won’t necessarily have completists cursing the need to buy again a whole load of the same stuff.
Intriguingly, it’s multi-instrumentalist Edey’s debut recording Daybreak from 2001 and his most recent The Collective from 2010 that provide nearly two-thirds of the tracks selected. But it’s all good stuff and an ideal entry point for beginners who might have enjoyed his Wriggle And Writhe duo album with Brendan Power.
