"Review of Songs Along The Highway from HelloMusic.com"

(from HelloMusic.com re: Songs Along The Highway)

Performance:

Instruments - Lead

We felt the instrumental leads on this track were tuneful, interesting and well-articulated. There's no overplaying here, and nothing seems to be lacking either. Spot on.

Vocals - Lead

Lead vocals are the first thing that most listeners pay attention to, so a great performance is essential. Your lead vocals really grabbed us. We don't tag a lot of releases as having great lead vocals, so this is an excellent strength for you to have.

Songwriting:

Lyrics

Crafting interesting lyrics is hard and a completely different art than writing the music. Clearly you've put some thought into your lyrics. Good work.

Melody

Above almost everything else, melody is an essential musical quality. Yours jumped out at us. Good melodies don't come easy; you should be proud.

Song Structure

We thought this song had a logical structure and all the parts were distinct. A good song structure generally has both repetition and surprise, and we thought you nailed it.

Production:

Instrumentation

Having a good arrangement, with the right instrumentation, helps give listeners a good sense of what's happening musically. Your arrangements were just right. Nice job.

Sonic Quality

It sounds like you sent us well-mastered, high-quality files. We hear the details loud and clear. This is an essential quality for a commercial release. Nice job.

Production Quality

All the elements in the mix here sound clear, and they coalesce into a cohesive sound that suits the composition. This is very much its own art form. Nice work.

"Ramblin' Man"

Traveling from Portland, Maine, to L.A. to Alabama and back in his new CD Walkin' Strong, local rocker Timothy Gurshin manages to convey the blistered, road-weary-but-restless feel of a vagabond. His self-penned lyrics focus on scattered moments in time, and his sound - which he describes as an Americana blend of folk, rock, country and blues - seems a fitting vehicle for the journey. He hints at failed plans and fleeting romances in "Last Day in L.A." and "Alabama Smile," singing of a woman who knew him better than he knew himself: "She told my fortune/ she knew what I'd done / she saw it end long before we'd begun." But Gurshin, who lives in Canterbury and performs around New England, never wallows. And his title track punctuates his wanderings with a sense of hard-won contentment. MORE NEWS:

Happy to report I have been selected to play as an opening act for a headliner show at the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling, NY. The Crier is one of the best stops in the country on the acoustic music trail. Looking forward to it!

April 2011 -- I am off to New York for a swing through the Hudson Valley to play a few gigs, then on to Texas to start recording the new studio CD!

Thanks to Shawn Henderson of WSCA-FM in Portsmouth for having me on his show for an interview and to play a few songs. Shawn runs a great show, and has had some great guests such as the legendary Eric Andersen, musician/Hollywood actor Jeff Daniels and New England favorite Jon Pousette-Dart.

Had the pleasure of playing the Keene Music Festival last summer for the first time - a huge event featuring five stages of music!

Then I got to do a set at the Black Mt. Festival which featured the Rustic Overtones - a great day on the mountain!

And thanks to Jack Beard of WUNH in Durham for having me play a bit on his excellent "Folk Show."

The documentary film Mayflowers has just been released - and I am proud to report that I wrote and performed the theme song for this movie. I say proud because I believe this film tells an important story about student anti-war activities on the campus of the University of New Hampshire in May, 1970. It is worthwhile history to review no matter what your politics. You can see a trailer for the film at the video page of my web site, www.timothygurshin.com. For more information, please visit nhmovies.com. Mayflowers was featured at the N.H. Film Festival in Portsmouth and the S.N.O.B. Film Festival in Concord.

I've been working at writing songs since I can remember trying to figure out how a radio worked. It is a never ending quest to catch magic.

For many years I have performed solo in New England, and also in Nashville at clubs such as The Bluebird Cafe and Gibson's. I upwards of 80 shows a year but I want to expand that schedule!

My music has been used in two documentary films, an instructional art video and even won first prize in a rock song contest. Two of my songs were featured on Chris Conn's nationally syndicated radio show.

Please give a listen at the audio and video sections of this EPK and my web site.

I have released four albums, the most recent of which is 2010's "Songs Along The Highway." You can hear songs from all these recordings at my web site, www.timothygurshin.com.

Depending on the nature of the gig, my live shows feature my original songs along with unique arrangements of classic acoustic music.

My songs are based on lyrics with impact delivered by compelling music in the tradition of Kris Kristofferson, Tim Hardin and Bob Dylan. Lyrically, my songs often deal with both struggle and perseverance, and the inevitable ambiguity of any move you make. Musically, I strive to create a solid melody and get it across with passion, while making it at least appear to be simple.

I play the guitar in a variety of tunings, flatpick and fingerstyle, and often add melodic or blues style harmonica.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE AUDIO SAMPLES IN THIS EPK WERE RECORDED LIVE.
I realize you are looking to book a live show, and so I have put these samples in the EPK to give you a more accurate sense of what you will really hear at a show!
