Article Text:

A locally produced CD, "Heroes Too -- Somebody Brave," intended to uplift the spirits of American soldiers, will be released in Modesto next month. The CD features local talent and internationally known musicians on music recorded and packaged for those serving in the military. It is produced by Modesto-based Simply Agape Project, founded by First Baptist Church of Modesto percussionist Tim Wirth. The goal is getting "quality music that is encouraging and inspiring" to military personnel around the world, Wirth said. The CD includes words of hope and encouragement from veterans, pastors, parents of soldiers and Lt. Col. Brian Birdwell, who was badly injured in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

The eclectic album includes songs with Peruvian guitarist Ramon Stagnaro, Mexican bassist Abraham Laboriel and Peruvian drummer and percussionist Alex Acuna. Contemporary Christian artist Steve Camp contributed three songs to the album. It also includes songs from the play "Not Forgotten," by First Baptist's Lin Sexton, based on personal stories of Vietnam veterans.

Wirth, former drummer for Gary Lewis and the Playboys, plays on some tracks. "It's all by musicians who love Jesus," he said. Simply Agape aims to sponsor copies of the CD for 400 to 700 soldiers. A $20 sponsorship buys a copy for an American soldier serving active duty, including in Afghanistan and Iraq. CDs are distributed through the American Red Cross and other agencies, or may be mailed by sponsors. Free CDs will be available at the Veterans Day celebration in downtown Modesto on Nov. 11. Call 529-7495 or see www.simplyagape.com.
