April will mark the return of Jordan and Jonathan Lawson to the Gila Valley. The Safford High School Orchestra is proud to present Tin Cup Gypsy, featuring hometown boys who have made it big. Along with Jonathan’s wife, Cassan-dra, the group will perform at the Center for the Arts on Wednesday, April 9, 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and on sale at Richards Music Store.
Jonathan and Jordan both graduated from charter high schools at age 15 and then attended Eastern Arizona College. They transferred to NAU will a full-tuition waiver, and each graduated with BAs in performing arts on the violin at the age of 18.
In 2003, Jonathan went to Nashville, where he began session work with Lorrie Morgan on violin (fiddle), guitar and vocals. He worked with Lorrie for a couple of years before taking a fiddle, guitar and vocals position with Sara Evans. Jonathan is still traveling with Sara Evans and doing some session work when he is not on the road. He is very excited about being slated to co-produce the up-and-coming Katie Armiger album featuring the hit single “17 in Abilene.” Jordan followed to Nashville in 2005, was soon hired by Josh Turner on violin, mandolin and vocals, and continues touring with Josh across the country.
While attending NAU, Jonathan met and married Cassandra Marcum of Phoenix. They later attended Belmont Univer-sity in Nashville, where Cassandra received a BA in commercial music management and Jonathan received an MBA in commercial music administration. Cassandra is currently with a modeling agency and is a member of Screen Actors Guild. She has appeared in several music videos, including Jon Bon Jovi, Montgomery Gentry, Leeland and a soon-to-be-released Blake Shelton video. Her latest appearance is a leading part in the new Trisha Yearwood video, “This Is Me You’re Talking To.”
“Both boys grew up in Safford/Thatcher and studied violin under Rexann Lindsay,” said father Kerry Lawson. “Rexann was extremely instrumental in shaping their talents.” Lawson also credited former EAC Jazz Band and current SHS Band Director Tom Sullivan with helping Jonathan develop and define his musical talents and interests.

In addition to their live performances, Jonathan, Jordan and Cassandra have appeared on several national programs, including CMT’s “Cross-Country,” “Grand Ole Opry Live,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Martha Stewart Show,” TBN’s “Hour of Power” and the “2006 Nashville Independence Day Cele-bration.” - Eastern Arizona Courier

At the core of Tin Cup Gypsy you’ll find a fusion of acoustic Folk, Rock, Jazz, and Bluegrass with earthy lyrics and rich melodies that captures the essence of their Roots-rock genre. By featuring a variety of instruments such as Mandolin, Violin, Concertina, Acoustic Guitar, Percussion, Bass, and three-part Harmonies, the group’s unique blend attracts a diverse group of listeners.
This grass-roots trio weaves a fresh sound with the classic groundbreaking styles of the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Nickel Creek, and rocker-diva Bonnie Raitt. Although in their early twenties, the members of Tin Cup Gypsy have collected a wealth of experiences that has far exceeded their time.
Collectively they have worked as musicians for multi-platinum recording artists such as Sarah Evans, Maroon 5, Lorrie Morgan and Josh Turner as well as Steve Holy, Joni Eareckson Tada, and Justin Unger (of Across the Sky). In addition to their live performances, Jonathan, Jordan, and Cassandra Lawson have appeared on several national programs including; The Martha Stewart Show, The View, Good Morning America, Today, CMTs Cross-Country, Grand Ole Opry Live, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Cassandra and Jordan have also played key roles in music videos for Bon Jovi, Trisha Yearwood, Blake Shelton, Montgomery Gentry, Josh Turner, Danielle Peck, and Provident Recording artist Leeland.
While these young guns from the deserts of Arizona took Nashville by storm, in a few short months the trio quickly gained the interest of several regional markets in Missouri, Arkansas, California, and their native Arizona and show no sign of slowing down. Accomplished as they may be, live performance lies at the heart of their résumé and the three wayfaring musicians bring in a new level of fresh talent with a current of musical gusto and magnetic presence.
