Philadelphia native TK MAC has been a fixture in the music & nightlife industry for a decade. Having spent the last few years as a songwriter, producer, DJ, and engineer, TK has decided to pursue a lifelong dream of being an artist. Dedicating himself fully to his craft, TK MAC locked himself in the studio for the past two years to work on his debut project “A Hollywood Love Story”. With the project now complete, TK is now performing for new fans across the country. Remaining versatile, TK will also be performing select DJ dates across the country for high-end retailers, nightlife groups and private individuals.

The Hype Magazine got TK MAC to weigh in on a few things:

NATHAN BEST/ FOR THE HYPE MAGAZINE
Your debut single “Work It More” is out now. How does it feel?

It feels amazing! Long overdue! I’ve spent the last decade behind-the-scenes as a producer, songwriter and DJ so to step into the spotlight feels incredible. I’m excited to share “Work It More” as well as my debut project “A Hollywood Love Story” with the public.

How would you describe this song?

This song is an ode to the strong, working, independent, brave, sexy, and classy woman. I wanted to be able to have a song that could be played in the club that did nothing but appreciate and “big up” women.

How did your interest in music begin?

Well, if you ask my mom, she’d say it began during her pregnancy. My father is an incredible musician and pianist and I would kick uncontrollably when he played the piano. Three years later, I was studying classical piano and violin and haven’t stopped playing, learning, and writing since. I’ve always been fascinated by the sound and the emotional connections that music creates.

Can you explain to us the meaning behind the name TK Mac?

Sure! My grandmother’s middle initials are TK and my Dad’s middle name is McDonald. These two people have always pushed me to pursue music and not only to pursue it but to learn from it, study it, and “be the best” at whatever it was I set out to accomplish. I wanted to show respect and pay homage to two people that not only helped give me my talents but also helped to nourish my gift.

You spent a lot of time working behind-the-scenes DJing and producing music for different artists. Can you tell us about your decision to transition into a Recording Artist?

It actually wasn’t difficult at all. Having been an engineer, DJ, producer, and songwriter already – there was only one more step – recording VOCALS! My closest friends, colleagues, and family, in particular, were extremely supportive and instrumental about the final decision to crossover.

Being from Philadelphia what Artist did you grow up listening to?

I attended a boarding school in New Jersey, The Peddie School, and we had students from all over the world attend school. Living with students from all over, exposed me to so many types of music ranging from Nirvana to Jay-Z to Moby and Daft Punk.

Also living in a musical household, I was exposed to gospel artists such as James Cleveland and Shirley Caesar, soul & funk artists such as Prince, James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, Aretha, Jazz Artists such as Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Nat King Cole.

Who are some of the Artist you would like to collaborate with in the future?

Haha, my artist bucket list?!?!? – J Cole, 6lack, Khalid, Kehlani, Jay-Z, Future, Murda Beatz, Taz Taylor, Pharrell, Beyonce, Young Thug, Logic, H.E.R. and SZA

Can you tell us the vibe of your upcoming EP?

My upcoming project is called “A Hollywood Love Story” and it takes you through the many stages of an adult relationship. I wanted to address real issues and experiences that are weaved together into a musical story

What impact do you hope to make through your music?

I hope to reach and impact as many fans as possible. I want anyone that listens to my music to feel like they can relate to what I am writing about or they know someone who was going through something similar. I hope to also leave you musically fulfilled with each performance and show!

What are some of your long-term goals?

Long term, I want to continue putting out music as an artist, working with other artists as a writer and producer and continuing to touch as many people as I can around the world. I’m also producing for four artists, Zak Downtown, Cups, Jhobe, and Jess Stark and I am excited about their upcoming music releases and careers. I would also love to run a major label after my performing career is over. I am also planning to attend graduate school in 2020 to get a Masters in music production.

Outside of music what else are you interested in?

I am interested in acting, writing, basketball, and binge watching tv series. I’m also a vegan and serious Philadelphia Eagles fan. - The Hype Magazine
