"T. RILEY SWINGS HIGH WITH “TAKE THE MONEY”"

Vancouver artist spotlight – T. Riley

We caught T. Riley and her sizzling stage show last week at Falconetti’s on Commercial Drive. After seeing the swinging video for her song “Take the Money”, from her 2011 EP of the same name, we wanted to see what she could do live. We weren’t disappointed.

In fact, we enjoyed the set – which included Blondie’s “Call Me” – so much we asked T. Riley (first name, Teresa) to be our inaugural The Snipe Vancouver Spotlight Artist.

Who are you and where were you born?

I was born in a crossfire hurricane, raised by tumbleweeds, blew out to the West Coast and became a siren.

But if you ask my mom, I was born in Grande Cache, Alberta, and raised in Medicine Hat.

What is/are your current occupation(s)?

I am a full time musician right now, on a hiatus from flying airplanes as a commercial pilot. I am also an actor.

Tell us about your latest album/video/single/blog post (choose what you are most excited about):

“Take The Money” off my latest album seems to be growing a following, slowly but surely! It is starting to get some radio play on CiTR, and I have had requests for placement in certain webcasts and programs, so that is exciting.

I’m also meeting with a couple producers to make plans to get in the studio ASAP, and that is probably the most exciting thing for me… creating in the studio!

Why you do what you do:

If I didn’t I would shrivel and fade into the abyss.

Dream gig:

Headlining Royal Albert Hall in London, with No Doubt and the Black Keys opening, and David Bowie joining me for a duet of “I’m Afraid of Americans”. - thesnipenews.com - Shawn Conner

"T Riley reviewed by Unsignedthemagazine.com"

T. Riley By: Corbyn Bricie

T. Riley (no not Teddy) is a reformed pilot who decided to clip her wings settle in Canada and soar through the clouds of rock instead. Cumulus, stratus...blah blah blah...the lady is dope. Self proclaimed genre shape shifters, she and her band of talented fellows are fantabulous and we know because we have the self titled CD. Thirteen tracks of awesome lyrics and chord changes, her voice reminded us of the Go-Gos in their punk days. It’s evident that this pretty lady is a thinker as evidenced in her lyrics. Not too heavy mind you but very clever. Classic line: “I never wanted to be the halo hangin around your neck. – To Be Riley has moved traveled the world gathering musical experiences to her bosom that provides a depth to her unique blend of indie-pop-rock. Just when you think you can neatly file her into the heavy, progressive pigeon-hole, out comes a sweet, pretty, county-esque ballad. Citing influences like Blondie, PJ Harvey and Tool it should be easy to see our dilemma in deciding what exactly to call her music. Riley played the rock circuit Toronto for a couple of years, and then searching for fulfillment, she settled in Vancouver and enrolled in VCC to study jazz. “Nicely jaded, I needed something more, so I enrolled in the Jazz music program at VCC which was just what I needed. My ears opened up and I met amazing new people and was exposed to amazing new music. I met Ryan Guldemond who started as my guitar teacher, then I quickly recruited him into my band after losing my socks from seeing him perform. Ryan since, however, has gone on to world domination with Mother Mother, so I have recruited Sir Rick Rodney to fill his shoes. The Universe brought me Ali Siadat and his funky beats through mutual friends. Neil Cruikshank, the man of many talents, has joined us to play bass. Crystal Balint, a talented singer-actor-songwriter has recently stepped aboard the project to add her sweet BGs to the mix, says Riley. And that’s all we have for now. We’ll have to keep our eyes on this one and her/their developing career. - Corbyn Bricie

"T. Riley's Eat Your Heart Out full of well-crafted tunes"

T. Riley
Eat Your Heart Out (Independent)
There’s something to be said for just not giving a fuck. With that in mind, let’s give T. Riley props, because when it comes to fitting into today’s pop- music landscape, the number of fucks she gives seems to be precisely zero.
How else would you explain an artist whose sound incorporates elements of rock, blues, country, and pre-bop jazz—usually all within a single song? That last element comes mostly courtesy of Bonnie Northgraves, whose invariably tuneful trumpet playing is all over Riley’s third album, Eat Your Heart Out. This isn’t to say that Riley (known to the taxman as Teresa) makes inaccessible music. In collaboration with her cowriter Winston Hauschild—who also produced the record and graced it with his own vocals, keyboards, and percussion—the singer has created a collection of well-crafted tunes. The highlights are probably the title track, a gritty gutbucket stomper that opens the LP, and the apparently untitled song that closes it, which is a straight-up big-band–era swing number.
It’s all perfectly good music, but Riley isn’t going to be cutting into Katy Perry’s market share. One guess how many fucks she gives about that.

T RILEY....

A self described rocker chick with a rebellious streak obsessed with swing dancing, tequila repasado, and making all kinds of genres fit in her music, T Riley likes to rock, swing and croon.

Her latest album, set to be released April 28th is self produced along with the help of Dave Chick, and the result is a dynamic album with pleasing nooks and crannies all over the place.  If you like real music, this is for you.  "Zero Baby" is a full on rocker, while "Stronger" is a ska like pop tune you'll want to put on repeat.  "A Real Man" is a sexy, gritty, guitar heavy grind, and "Just One Man" is a heart felt orchestral journey... "Still A Fool for You" is a fun reggae inspired 'I still love you' song.  A lot of variety that fits together like a fabulous potluck dinner...Eat up!

Previous works have included working with producer Winston Hauschild (producer: Hannah Georges, Bodhi Jones) who cooked up  'Eat Your Heart Out' which can be described as 'dirty swing'. Imagine Black Keys fronted by Gwen Stephanie...  "Execution" is a delightful critique on the modern world with a modern rock edge.
