Soul bearing performances of well crafted heart felt songs.

Biography

Indie/Folk solo artist Todd McLaughlin has come a long way from his humble beginnings and rather music less childhood to develop into one of the most thoughtful writers and soul-baring performers on the Singer/Songwriter circuit. Inspired by a bout with cancer, he dropped his career and turned to music, resulting in successful tours, awards, and a new album entitled, “True Stories Based on Fictional Events”.
Growing up in a family of computer programmers, Todd was a black sheep. “My parents didn’t own a single album,” he recalls. His first stereo, in Jr. High, opened his ears to the world of music. “I’d sit and listen to the oldies station and be mesmerized by Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, James Taylor. I’ve never really related to contemporary music, most of the great songwriters have left us long ago.” Eventually, while most of the kids around him received cars for their 16th birthday, Todd received an acoustic guitar and took to it immediately.
After high school Todd went to college and eventually found himself working in Silicon Valley as a computer programmer. “Music was always a hobby for me; it’s not taken seriously in my family. My fate was predetermined.” That’s when his life was turned upside down. “When I got cancer it created a sense of mortality for me. I knew I wanted to leave a legacy more than what I could accomplish in a cubicle.” Unsure about his next step, Todd returned to Southern California, begin writing, and teaching himself fingerstyle guitar. After a friend heard one the songs in progress, he coerced the artist into showcasing his talents.
Todd recounts, “I remember the first time I performed live. I went down to the biggest open mic in Los Angeles and played with my eyes closed. I was nervous as hell. I packed up my stuff and when I left the booking agent chased me out on the street and offered me a show. I had only one or two songs written at the time. I realized then that it was time to write some more songs and start taking music a little more seriously.”
Todd never stopped writing and soon the earnestness and honesty of his songs caught the ear of an ever-increasing audience. Todd states, “I think vanity is the bane of good songwriting. Once you start worrying how you are going to be perceived by your audience, you lose the sincerity that people connect to.” His music connected with some people at LA's pretigious Musician's Institute where he was awarded a scholarship, and upon graduation, the award for Best Student / Recording Project.
Todd McLaughlin’s new album, “True Stories Based on Fictional Events”, is a testimonial of life experience and a unique portrayal of growth that we can all relate to. What I Know Now

Written By: Todd McLaughln

Fear on the street all littered with feet of people who don’t stand a chance
Eclipsing my past with the shadow I cast and hope I don’t draw a glance
Remember the days I was smart for my age before I was living a lie
I thought I was young but my childhoods done and it never told me goodbye

But I know now, well now now now I know.
Well I know

I met a girl and she changed my world and changed it again when she left
She moved down the coast now lives with her folks I still love her but its all a mess
Live for the day and then throw it away sit in your room and get high
Woke up today and then filled it with shame, its shame that keeps me alive

I feel okay but I know I’m just running away from
I feel okay but I know I’m just running away
I feel okay but I know I’m just running away from you

Shook like a truck that’s down on its luck ‘cause luck only seems to drive by
Bested again sure as lying’s a sin well I did and it made her cry
Dim candle light of our trysting night don’t let me hurt her again
I learned that trust is crippled by lust and love isn’t easy to win

But I know now, well now now now I know.
Well I know

I feel okay but I know I’m just running away from
I feel okay but I know I’m just running away
I feel okay but I know I’m just running away from you

Patterns

Written By: Todd McLaughln

its not like i need you
but why did i meet you
try to deceive you
defeat you
and keep you round

blame it on timing
finding what i need
mixed up inside me
finally
im wearing down

we
were
silently insecure
knowing in time
knowing in time
that i'll run

i
lied
forgot the reasons why
do you know?

it wasnt on purpose
it wasnt a conquest
its just how i feel right
i feel right
feel right now

feeling unsorted
pretending im tortured
whether I force it
find it i know
time will tell

we
were
silently insecure
knowing in time
knowing in time
that i'll run

i
lied
forgot the reasons why
do you know?

About Love

Written By: Todd McLaughln

hung your head in a parking lot
cursed all the friends you lost
you got in a fight for me
had nothing to do with me

calling your mom a bitch
your dirty midwestern lip
trying to play innocent
you're angry and violent

You
lied all the time
and it taught me a lot about
love
i moved away
and you gained all that weight
love
god I was so young
and oh shit
I just couldn't deal with it

hid you from all my friends
slept right through school again
stole some nintendo games
made fun of your emo ways

snuck into your parents house
woke up with every sound
worried they'll find me out
i don't have a christian mouth

Oooh I strung you along
and it taught me a lot about
love
we were both so depressed
i was faking the rest
love
i thought i was so different
oh shit. i was afraid of it

love takes all youre gonna say and then
love strips all the sense away
you know that you don't know a thing about love

told me you hate your dad
in Berkeley on Telegraph
snapped a few photos off
saved for the memory box

cried on the skiing trip
drove home because of it
like our relationship
you always seem to quit

you
hurt me a lot
and it taught me a lot about
love
and i would do it again
if i didnt know so much about
love
i was in over my head
oh shit. im still in pain from it

love takes all youre gonna say and then
love strips all the sense away
you know that you don't know a thing about love

got home just after one
put some old records on
louder than you'd allow
but you wont call me now
