Todd grew up in Richmond, VA and began playing the drums at the age of 13. His father, Bill Wellons, is a drummer, piano player and songwriter, and there was always music around the house growing up. Todd began taking lessons with his dad on a practice pad and the Gretsch kit Bill owned since the 60’s. From his dad he learned many aspects of being a musical player, most importantly playing to serve the song, and studied the playing of his dad’s favorite drummers such as Steve Gadd, Joe Morello and Ringo Starr. At the age of 17 he studied with Richmond, VA drummer Matt Goves, who instilled in Todd a love of metronomes and the funky, tight drumming styles of Questlove and David Garibaldi. In college at the University of Virginia Todd continued his studies of jazz with Latin/bebop drummer Robert Jospe. He played in the UVa jazz ensemble and in multiple jazz combos as well as in several rock bands outside of school. His major was Economics but he spent most of his time in the music building trying to comprehend the drumming on albums by Miles Davis and Chick Corea. Senior year of college his current band Sons of Bill formed. Sons of Bill plays roots rock/Americana music, and has released three LPs with a fourth slated for release in early 2014. The five-piece group tours worldwide playing approximately 150 shows per year. When Todd is home in Virginia he teaches private lessons, does freelance gigs and studio work, and enjoys practicing drums and guitar.
