"Lots of fan support for Tok'n up on 13th Floor"

Ashley Dier

Meet Nicholas Pereira, successful marketing graduate turned aspiring musician. With dreams of making his mark on the rap game, Pereira has devoted his entire life to music and hopes to act as a role model other beat dropping lyrists.

It was a passion and appreciation for music that planted the seeds years ago. Pereira, under the alias "Tok'n," began his career with friends in the business, but quickly found that a solo career was best suited. "I started off rapping with some old boys of mine who were involved in music, but differences in thoughts of music direction lead me on my own. I scooped up brother, Kevin Pereira, to write beats. The rest is history."

This history is not one filled with platinum records and praise, rather one where Pereira constantly found himself having to prove his worth within the industry. "I've been through the harsh remarks, cats telling me that I wouldn't sell and I was no good, straight to my face."

Despite the lack of support, Pereira has managed to claw his way to the top and has released and album under Voodoo Records. Receiving notable mention from Much Music, 13th Floor has humbled and amazed this up and coming MC. "The fan support has been amazing. The reactions aster shows and the pleasure that people get from my record have put me in awe. With the release of the limited edition CD I have realized I am very lucky to do what I do. It has actually humbled me."

Pereira's Sheridan career has not gone to waste, and he accredits much of his successful managerial skills to his marketing diploma. "Marketing is everything in the music biz. It has helped a whole lot, from managing my street team, to getting people to visit my myspace account and the final sale of the record. It has given me a good business sense, so I can take my career to the level of where I want it to be. Sheridan gave me a great experience."

While his success has exceeded his expectations, Pereira realizes it is only the beginning for him. He feels that if he can change one person's life for the better that he would have reached his goals. To the current Sheridan students, he reminds us that to reach our goals it will be hard word and to always keep our heads up.

It's his workaholic attitude, and respect for the industry the have pushed Pereira into the growing spotlight that is his budding music career. To the fans and critics, he says that he is true to his music and word. "I am genuine when I speak. I have crazy love for people, especially my fans. I am just like you. I like to party, get wild and let loose, so hit me up on myspace and tell me where the parties at."

"Tok'n"

Tok'n
Written by Christopher "Alleyne" Rudder

I was chillin' in the PulpMag's head office...when Leena (Skins, Confessions Of A Shopaholic) shot me an e-mail...even though her desk is right accross from mine. (We are all very lazy here at Pulp...it might appear like we are busy when you look at the site but really we're not...oh check out the interview I did with Leena this month on the PulpFiktion Podcast, PulpFamilia Edition, PulpCast EP: e11even: Skinz.) That was a shameless plug...Anyways She was telling me about this local Canadian hip hop artist from here in Toronto named Tok'n. Thanks Leena, good job I'll take it from here...
Tok’n is the catalyst of a new hybrid, urban sound. He blends Hip-Hop, Rock and Pop hooks with his unique flow, drawing on influences both old-school and new. His vibes assault the listener from all sides with elements as diverse as Run DMC, Jimi Hendrix, Jay-Z, Papa Roach, K-OS and Ludacris, this is music for all era’s. He doesn’t just bring together ideas, but the people and resources to back them up. His new CD, “THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR” features performances by some of Canada’s best new emerging urban talent including TEXX & Mr. Ranking, Derek “Dirty” Simon (Toybox) and his all star production team of Mike Dmitrovic & Mike Kiofos (Voodoo Records).
Lyrically, Tok’n learned from the biggest and the best, studying his favorite US artist’s CDs, respecting & learning from the flows, grooves and rhymes.
Tok’n’s first single & video, “BREAKIN’ THE GAME”, is a perfect showcase of his riveting blend of sounds, words, grooves and voices that create incredibly catchy music relevant to his roots in suburban Canada, but with rock-solid Hip Hop credibility that can cross any international border. So with me right now, bringing down the house right now are a couple of hip hop heads/artists...Myself and Tok'n!!!

Alleyne: Yo, what up dawg?

Tok'n: Workin, Workin u know how its is.

Alleyne: No dougbt...I wanna thank you for taking time out of your schedule to talk with me and to PulpMag

Tok'n: Thats No problem for me, I love doing this and I should be thanking you as well for showing me the Love you have given to me.

Alleyne: iiight lets do this!!! Aside from music and what is written
in your bio, tell us something about you that your fans don't know.

Tok'n: Well any of my fans that have had the opportunity to meet me know that I am one of the most down to earth people, no matter what I still like to chill out, go to the clubs and do everything that everyone else does. I think its important that I stay that way, i know i will cause its natural for me, I can only be me.

Alleyne: As an artist, the musical journey is a long (trust me I
know) and can not be done by oneself. Who are some of the people in
your life who have supported you and continue to support you through
you musical career.

Tok'n: Definatly my Brother who is also my business partner. he is one of the excutive producers for the album and co-produced the record. My mom and Pops have been so suppotative of everything I do and stand behind me. My whole team at Voodoo records and War By Choice are real good and Mike D, the big man and Voodoo is a great guy and shows much love to me.

Alleyne: At what point in your life did you know you wanted to
pursue a musical career and realize that you had what it takes to
succeed in the messed up industry.

Tok'n: Not to sound cocky but I succeed at anything i do, its just me. I don't stop until i am succesful. Music is messed up yes and I think their are certain qualaties a person has to have to be succesful, one being a bit thick skinned, knowing how to take negative and turning into postive. I knew I wanted to be invloved with music during highschool but really pursued it after highschool.

Alleyne: How does it feel to be on the cover of Yahoo Music Canada
and how did that happen.

Tok'n: The Director of YAHOO MUSIC was scounting new talent and was noticing the hype and talent comming out of Voodoo records. Being one of the artist leading the Voodoo records Movement and then hearing my music and talking to Voodoo the rest became history. So special thanks to YAHOO music.

Alleyne: What experience do you value more and in turn get more
personal satisfaction from as an artist: The creative process of
making a song from the thoughts, inspirations and and feelings to
the writing, producing and/or recording of that song OR performing
the the finished track at one of your live shows and feeling/seeing
the crowds positive reaction and love for your musical genius.

Tok'n: Gotta be the live show for sure, I love connecting with fans and showing what i have worked so hard for. I do enjoy writting and recording, the creative process is fun, 3'oclock in the morning and still recording is crazy fun but i love the fan reaction. the fact that I can reach so many people and have the chance to talk with them is a high - Pulp Mag

"Tok’n still proving himself in the rap scene"

Tok’n still proving himself in the rap scene

We first met Nicholas Pereira, former Sheridan student turned musician when he released his limited edition album 13th Floor. In only a few months this budding emcee has managed to solidify his career and impress even the harshest critics all the while trying his best to sweep the Canadian rap scene off his feet.

Still under the alias of “Tok’n”, Pereira has spent the past few months establishing himself as an accomplished musician. Weather dropping beats in the studio, breaking it down in front of the camera, or carousing at parties Pereira understands the importance of publicity in his busy schedule.

“Since we last spoke a lot has happened. We have been getting ready to release the first single called “Breaking da Game”, so we’ve been gathering all the information and getting the final game plan together. We’re also getting ready to debut the video for “Breaking da Game” and I have been busy rehearsing for up coming shows this summer,” says Pereira.

“As well as recording final vocals for the record, I have been getting out to a lot of different parties that fans are inviting me too. I’ve been really trying to get out there and meet the people who support me, I think that’s very important,” he adds.

With the production of his first music video, Pereira pares his knowledge and understanding of the industry with his passion for music and develops what he feels was a great accomplishment.

“The video felt good. I had a lot of support that day and it’s cool. I felt like I really accomplished something that most people would only dream about. It was a good feeling and it was a great time on set.” Remaining true to his fans Pereira adds, “I would like to thank all the people who came out and made it possible. It was all love with everyone on set and I spent as much time as I could chillin out with all the extras who took so much time out of their day to help me out. I really enjoyed making the video.”

Funding for a video can be hard to come by as Pereira discusses. “I received funding from a private investor and of course my label, Voodoo Records. I also invested in the video. You have to invest in yourself if you truly believe in yourself.”

Previously Pereira commented on the negative press he has received but has now realized that it is a crucial element, necessary in becoming successful. “There seems to be more people jumping on board and we have been getting great responses from fans and industry, but there will always be bad press and people out there who will put you down. No matter how successful anyone gets some one will be there to try and pull you down.”

One group of people Pereira seems to be incredibly popular with are his female fans. “ I seem to have hit it with the ladies, its cool and I don’t mind. Actually I wont lie, I like it, having a lot of girls talking to you and wanting to meet you. I can really appreciate female fans on many levels. I like being around woman and having a good time, but always with respect.”

Despite the abundance of female love a modest Pereira realizes the importance of staying grounded. “I am very close to my team that works with me and they keep me grounded. We are like brothers all of us at the Voodoo family, so I know they won’t hesitate to slap me if I get out of line. I don’t take what I do for granted and I think that’s what keeps me grounded most of all.”

Pereira advises the student body to check out Yahoo music on March 19th for the Canadian online premier of his new video. And to keep their eyes open for more great things from Tok’n in 2007.

As the last few months have shown, this young artist is learning how to balance the love hate relationship that is the music industry with his own personal values. While receiving praise from numerous females, Pereira keeps his eye on the prize. An inspiration to all Sheridan students, he remains professional and does it all for the sake of music.
