Bio

Bob Dylan's Grandmother (BDG)

What started as an acoustic duo 2001 has had many incarnations. We've tried keyboards, harmonica, an extra guitar, even a sax player briefly, but the trio format has proven to be the most consistently tight and we kept the same lineup - Tom LePage on guitar, Mike Sessa on drums, and Bill Veley on bass - from late 2005 to the end of the summer of 2009. Sadly, circumstances have retired Mike from drumming. A brief incarnation of the band during the summer of 2010 produced one very high energy show, but ... we lost that drummer to a jazz band. (One is reminded of the running drummer gag in Spinal Tap, eh?)

Currently, I am in hiatus, but hope to form a new band when the right chemistry manifests. I am undecided about whether to re-use the BDG moniker or form a band with a new name. I would like to find a drummer and a keyboard player who share a similar approach to making music. I'm working with a bass player on some duet material, but we have not yet decided on a name nor made any public appearances. Nonetheless, I can be found around the mid-Willamette valley at blues jams and open mics when my schedule permits.

BDG was based on a simple philosophy: only play whatever songs naturally come to life for the whole group. That way, we are always enjoying ourselves and the performance is never forced. Since all songs are in the repertoire by unanimous consensus, nobody holds back. I prefer to play songs that other bands in the area never play. Not to say we avoid all the usual suspects. Indeed, I love to play "Johnny B. Goode" as much as the next guy. But I lean towards the underappreciated gems like Daddy Cool's "Eagle Rock" and Lou Reed's "Rock and Roll." As the name implies, I love Mr. Zimmerman's work, both for his nearly always thoughtful material and for the fact that we can play his songs any way the spirit moves us.

If you love the music of the 60's, but are tired of uninspired covers, keep an eye out for the next lineup and give us a listen. Meanwhile, we leave you with some demos, live snippets, and the material from our EP.
