Lyrics

In The Valley

Written By: Tom Duke

In The Valley

They took him out of prison where he was doing time,
Said "there's another way to pay for your foolish crime,
And we need men like you out there who know how to fight."
In the valley full of shadows where many souls have died,
The moon was turning red while they were marching through the town,
Burning down the houses, his heart was a pounding drum.

The door slammed open, and the old man said to him:
"You can take my life but please spare my family"
No one could hear him as shots tore through the sky,
But the old man's daughter in the corner,
Her eyes were open wide.

She was born in the valley twenty years ago,
Growing up with many friends, often running through the fields,
Now more than half are gone, they fled overseas.
One day her mother told her: "You must also leave the town,
Though I'll stay here with your father, you're the apple of my eye."
She said: "If I leave you both, my heart will break in two"

Then the door slammed open, and the old man said it clear:
"You can take my life but please spare my family"
No one could hear him as shots tore through the sky,
But the old man's daughter in the corner,
Her eyes were open wide.

Watching the bodies falling on the ground,
And his hand reaching for her long dark hair...

She pushed him away, and spit in his face,
Shouting: "Go ahead and take my life but you won't take my pride"
He drew up his gun and aimed at her heart,
Grinned and pulled the trigger,
She died in a pool of blood.

Now her ghost haunts him, everywhere he goes,
Through many sleepless nights, and countless nightmares through the days.
And they gave him a medal for the war he had lost,
In the valley full of shadows,
Where many souls have died.
