Biography

I was born in Bangor, Maine in 1966. I met a professional singer songwriter working in Bar Harbor, Maine one summer when I was a teenager. We formed a duo and traveled to Durham, North Carolina, where I worked on my songwriting and got involved with the local blues and roots music scene. I played guitar with North Carolina Piedmont bluesman Big Boy Henry and other area blues performers. I formed a band, Yellen Horsley, with a washtub bass player/harmonica player and washboard player. Since 1989, we have been playing a mixture of my originals, blues, and old timey music in clubs around Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I have recorded two CDs of originals in my home studio.

I am working on a third CD with my wife Elizabeth. She is a writer and marketing consultant in the graphic design and writing business that we started ten years ago. She also writes fiction and sings on a few of our new songs.

Dangerous Man

Written By: Tom Forsythe

He twists and he turns
Like a snake on wet slate
Down the pitch black road
From faith to hate
They gave him directions
He don’t need to understand
Long as they put power
In his weak little hand

Chorus
Heaven knows he’s a dangerous man
Heaven knows he’s a dangerous man

The room full of people
Was quiet and still
With a thirst for power
And an iron will
He’s dancin' around
With an axe in his hand
Come dance a little closer
All you enemies and friends

Chorus
Heaven knows he’s a dangerous man
Heaven knows he’s a dangerous man

His thoughts are all blurry
His nerves are like glass
Don’t question his authority
Don’t give him no sass
He threw the bottle and cried
Never again
Now he’s holdin a gun
In his shakin hand

Chorus
Heaven knows he’s a dangerous man
Heaven knows he’s a dangerous man

White Lie

Written By: Tom and Elizabeth Forsythe

Butcher’s finger on the scale
Honey, your check's in the mail
That well water in my wine?
The horse you sold me is stone blind

CHORUS
It was just a little white lie
People doin' it all the time
The buyer needs to beware
I won it fair and square

You hearda the ol’ switch and bait
Not 10 karat, gold plate
Your dog's just going to a farm
He won't come to any harm

CHORUS
It was just a little white lie
People doin' it all the time
Caveat emptor
Just gonna take a little bit more
Caveat emptor
Just gonna take a little bit more

Day old bread that's sold as fresh
Honey, you're prettier than all the rest
Somehow they forgot the stamp
The basement's just a little damp

CHORUS
It was just a little white lie
People doin' it all the time
Gotta lie a little if you wanna win today
No one's really listening anyway

(BREAK)

She’s only goin' through a phase
Only drove it on Sundays
You'll make it all up in tips
I just had a couple of nips

CHORUS
It was just a little white lie
People doin' it all the time
The buyer needs to beware
I won it fair and square

Anyone can be president you know
We'll do better than the status quo
We don't expect you to pay
This will all be yours someday

CHORUS
It was just a little white lie
People doin' it all the time
Caveat emptor
Just gonna take a little bit more
Caveat emptor
Just gonna take a little bit more

Bound For War

Written By: Tom Forsythe

God ain't gonna stop this train
Rumblin' on an endless track
Runs on the fears of men
We built it then we got revenge
God ain't gonna stop this train
Gotta do it with our bleeding hearts
This train is bound for war

There’s blood money in haulin' fear
And a hundred years of pain
Bringing you a load of tears
And life is what it takes
God ain't gonna stop this train
Send the bravest men
This train is bound for war

BREAK

God ain't gonna stop this train
The engines burning dreams
Puffin' out black smoke hate
Loaded down with tears
God ain't gonna stop this train
Send the strongest men
This train is bound for war

Rumblin' out there in the dark
Chokin' on the oil and the blood
Crushin' the weak and the strong
Grindin' their bones in the mud
God ain't gonna stop this train
Gotta do it with our bleeding hearts
This train is bound for war

BREAK

Fear ain't gonna stop this train
Can't do it with a shakin' hand
Tear up the tracks, be brave
At the border of the children’s land
God ain't gonna stop this train
Tear up the tracks be brave
This train is bound for war (3x)

Sad Fair

Written By: Tom Forsythe

The ferris wheel is closed cause of the wind
They even cut the lights off when it rains
Anyone that’s here is headed home
Unless they’re just stupid, drunk or stoned

Chorus
Ain’t it a sad little fair, Ain’t it a sad little fair
Ain’t it sad little fair, When it rains

The bosses are splitting up the gate
Ain’t much but at least they’re gettin paid
The nearest bar is twenty miles away
And the girls are just as desperate as the men that pay

Chorus
Ain't this a sad little fair
Ain’t it sad little fair
Don’t take long to blow your share
When it rains

They covered up the calliope with plastic
Now the rain has dampened every note
You know that carneys always talk about leavin
And this time Joe said he just might go home

Chorus
Ain't this a sad little fair
Ain’t it sad little fair
Out in the middle of nowhere
In the Rain

Now the freaks have locked their trailer door
Workin on a bottle as rain pounds the tin
Bones cried the bird girls hoggin all the whiskey
The merman said its paddle, sink or swim

Chorus
Ain't this a sad little fair
Ain’t it sad little fair
And noone really cares
When it rains

Gypsy Sally’s tent was drenched and heavy
Inside it smells like mud and wet hay
Just like water that’s waitin behind the levee
She held back what she thought with what she said

Chorus
Ain't this a sad little fair
Ain’t it sad little fair
And you ain’t goin nowhere
In this rain

China Doll

Written By: Tom and Elizabeth Forsythe

Sitting on the front porch
Too hot to breathe
Mama’s on the step below
Noisy fan is stirring up a breeze
There’s crows on the scarecrow
There’s crows on the scarecrow

CHORUS
Isn’t your ma just the prettiest girl you know?
She’s got a face just like a china doll

Eating tomatoes that are pulled from the vine
Sticky red juice running down her arm
Spot of pepper and a taste of salt
Neighbor’s dog is sounding the alarm
Neighbor’s dog is sounding the alarm

CHORUS
Isn’t your ma just the prettiest girl you’ve seen?
She’s got a face just like a china doll

[BREAK]

Cinder blocks are rough and hot
Iron railing’s smooth and cold
Mama’s eyes are blue and soft
She’s wonders if things will hold
Will the way they left it hold

CHORUS
Isn’t your ma just the prettiest girl you’ve seen?
She’s got a face just like a china doll

Mosquito bites up and down her legs
Baby’s crying inside
The phone is ringing like no one’s home
She knows how much he lies
She knows all about his lies

CHORUS
Your mama’s hips are wide, and her waist is small
She looks just like a little china doll

[BREAK]

Cicadas are screaming out in the yard
Pickup goes rumbling past
Mama’s thinking without any words
Jumps when the truck backfires
Her nerves are tight as wires
Nerves wound tight as wires

CHORUS
Your mama’s hips are wide, and her waist is small
She looks just like a little china doll

Isn’t your ma just the prettiest girl
The prettiest girl you know
She’s got a face just like a doll
A little china doll
A little china doll
My little china doll
