"Tone Trezure Defines Her Talent with “My Destiny”"

Today I started an unknown adventure into the quite recesses of the underground artist neighborhood. I was beckoned by a single tweet, from FlyGirlTONE. Who is an artist name Tone Trezure. When someone says “One of the most underrated Artists of our time”, you have to check it out. Now, I know a few things about underrated. Joy Denalane, Tok Tok Tok, and Avery*Sunshine are underrated. So without a second thought I headed over to her BandCamp page to check out her underrated talent. On the first song “My Destiny”, mind was blown, mouth was open, and eyes widen. Then my doubts creeped in. The next song “You Mean” can’t offer the same flow, vibe and overall deepness like the first. I was wrong. All I could think of is Florida Evans, saying “Damn, Damn, DAMN!!!”. This EP “My Destiny” has five songs that provide the heat. This is her first EP, and now I want a whole album of this goodness. There is no sign that this is her first release. The production is top notch. Her voice and talent will capture you, and make you bob your head, as you listen to each whisper and softness in her voice. Her fourth track “Don’t Hang Up The Phone” is a great example of this effect.
If you haven’t bought the EP yet, and are still reading just take a listen below. If that below can’t convince you, I don’t know what to say. :) - Soulified

"Hip Hop Habit: Tone Trezure"

“Every child has a dance you understand/ every child has to grow into a woman.” At least that’s how Tone Trezure sees it. For her, the juvenile dance was rebellion, a dance fortunately accompanied by the dream of making it big in hip hop. Thanks in no small part to her dazzling vocals and unique beats, that dream stayed by her side during her transition into womanhood. If you think you’ve heard her shimmering pipes before, it’s probably because you have. A phenomenal blend of happenstance and talent has landed Tone Trezure (born Latonya Geneva Givens) some pretty amazing opportunities over the years, most noticeably the chance to sing backups on Snoop Dogg’s “Promise I” from 2004’s R&G(Rhythm & Gangsta) and Xzibit’s “Ride or Die” of his 2004 LP Weapons of Mass Destruction. But let’s not get distracted here, this is a hip hop column after all. Tone Trezure’s singing is gorgeous, but you wouldn’t be reading about her if she didn’t have an agile flow and intelligent rhymes to match.

The autobiographical “My Destiny” is a first person narrative looking back on Tone’s cycle of ambition, from the inspired (“Since I could remember/ way back when I wanted fame and fortune/ used to stand in front of the mirror and portrait/ my brush was my mic and the fans was Moses”) to the discouraged (“but fabrication raised a bull-headed kid/ prevailed to rebel because I didn’t want the biz”). She was confused out of the gate, but got her shit straight when she saw the light, a truth spelled out in the chorus. The track’s disjointed instrumentals, consisting primarily of a purring bass and plucky guitar, are glued together by Givens’ warm resolved vocals when she sings and reliable verbal rhythm when she raps. Evidence of Tone’s musical talent and creativity—this “Mozart of drumming” plays 6 instruments, and is well versed in jazz, classical and modern gospel—is easily found here, predominantly in her ability to keep the track moving with minimal percussion (nothing but bass kicks on 1 and hand claps on 2&4) and repetitive half step modulations throughout to change things up. How many rap songs have a modulation?

Made it big? Not yet. But she’s on her way. On top of the aforementioned collaborations, she’s made music with Erykah Badu, Pharoahe Monche, Rick Ross, Quincy Jones and a slew of indie artists. Who can deny a resume like that? A line of EPs, including one featuring duets with her mother (gospel recording artist Cherry Givens), is in the works to lead up to her premier LP, which hopefully will hit shelves soon. Before her fame erupts, check her sound out in the player below and let us know what you think about her style in the comments! - OurStage

"'Love Me' Some Tone Trezure"

I see that quizzical look on your face, and you may, in fact, be asking yourself the same question that is plastered on the graphic above. In the event that the name Tone Trezure is unfamiliar, her work may not be once you check out the long list of artists who she's worked with including Erykah Badu, Strange Fruit Project, Bilal and Snoop Dogg, to name a few lest we be here all day. Her resume and credits aside, it's her own music that I'm all about right now. Earlier this year Tone dropped a hip hop soul bomb on the EP, My Destiny, and now she's dug in her crates to collect some of her past recordings on a second EP, The Lost Remnants of Tone Trezure. Her voice commands your attention on tracks such as the gritty "Love Me," where she implores her lover to simply love her for her. I'm in awe that this music was somewhere sitting on a hard drive gathering dust when it murders most everything that's on the radio right now. Thank goodness that Tone let these treasures loose--for free download no less--for us to enjoy.

"TONE TREZURE – MY DESTINY (EP)"

Latonya “Tone Trezure” Givens is a very gifted songstress from Flint, Michigan we would have already heard of if we were paying attention but since she has a new EP out by the name of My Destiny….I think that as of now she will be hard to dismiss. From beginning to end this 5 track EP filled with a funky RnB flow and the sultry soulful voice of Mrs Givens is a must listen!! I’ve listened to it over and over again and I guess that….even if she doesn’t score big right away…her time flying under the radar is most definitely over.

Under the rader?!…yeah you read that right. This lady has written and produced songs for Bilal on Love for Sale his shelved sophomore album. More specifically the tracks “Get out of My Hair” and “When We Were Young“. She has also worked with the likes of Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Strange Fruit Project, Pharaoh Monch, and Jay Electronica to name a few. But enough name dropping…the one name that should ring a few bells from now on is Tone Trezure. Why?!…Just Listen to the EP below which is available for purchase on her bandcamp site…Enjoy!!

"Tone Trezure – My Destiny"

Please allow me introduce you to Latonya “Tone Trezure” Givens! If you can’t recall the name, but the soulful vocals and slick production work sound familiar, and if your musical tastes are anything like mine, that may be because you have become familiar with her work through her writing and production on Bilal‘s Love for Sale project. Or, perhaps you have heard her features with Strange Fruit Project and on S1‘s fantastic Music Box album? No? Maybe you recognise her voice from Victory Is In My Clutches by Jay Electronica? After establishing credentials in the music game and accumulating a resume which boasts household names such as Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre and Erykah Badu, the phenomenally talented singer/songwriter/producer from Flint, Michigan prepares to step into the limelight with the release of her own 5-track EP entitled My Destiny.

My Destiny is one of the most impressive and inspiring efforts I have heard in a very long time and has basically owned my speakers for the last week! The entire project is written and produced by Tone Trezure herself, with the exception of some additional production work on the title-track courtesy of Josef Leimburgh, and Detroit legend Mr. Porter on Come With Me. All of the beats are bang on-point and complimented perfectly by Tone’s beautiful vocals, somewhat reminiscent of Georgia Anne Muldrow, fluctuating between asservations of gospel inspired spirituality, the smoothness and sexiness of classic RnB, and the independent street-consciousness of hip-hop revealing both the strengths and vulnerabilities of this incredibly dynamic singer-songwriter.

The EP possesses a cohesive classic post-90s US Soul feel throughout and manages to be artistic and inventive, whilst maintaining an honest and traditional musical approach in an age too often characterised by incoherent eclecticality and recherché experimentalism. I urge all fans of great music to support this fantastic project, which is available to buy for only $5 (just over £3) from Tone Trezure’s Bandcamp page!
