She might be fresh in the game, but Kenyan-Born rap artist “Tonicah” (AKA Maurine Tonicah Akinyi) hasn’t taken long to make her first mark in the Hip Hop community, especially within her home country of Denmark. Her biggest impacts so far have been felt at the “WAKA WAKA Festival” in 2013 and 2014, as well as the “Celebrate Africa Awards”, not to mention some of the underground clubs where she has graced the mic.
Tonicah’s 2015 single “Dream Chasers” has been very well received amongst Hip Hop enthusiasts. Her style and attitude bring a whole new refreshing change from the materialistic norm of mainstream-chart Hip Hop. Emanating a vibe more reminiscent to that of the highly respected and acclaimed underground artist, Jean Grae, Tonicah has a lot to say and expresses it eloquently, in the true form of rhythm, art, and poetry. Her former background in public speaking has helped construct the backbone of her strong lyrical delivery.
Putting the rapping aside, Tonicah brings a lot more to the table than the average Hip Hop artist. Her skills as a sound engineer/instrumentalist enable her to be a truly independent artist, delivering her own unique messages in her own unique way (with jazz influence playing a big part).
Heavily inspired by the music of Sade, Nas, Common, KRS One, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye, Tonicah believes that music is meant to be as healing as it is entertaining. In her own words she says “I like to follow Marley’s mandate: ‘When it hits you, you feel no pain’”.
As well as her flourishing solo work, Tonicah is part of the Danish Hip Hop outfit “Splif Click”, led by Lirical D Mirical, who has been instrumental in launching the careers of some of the big Danish artists, such as the late Natasja Saad, and Big Kaka.
With bigger plans now in the pipeline, there can only be greater things to come.
