As brutal as their namesake's acting chops, this Murfreesboro, Tennessee, quintet's second album thunders and rages with torrential tech-metal fury, the molten free-jazz arpeggios plinking and running down the face of a steely death-metal edifice. Chaotic hardcore rhythms prevent the sledgehammer bottom-end from getting stuck in a rut, as odd time signatures and face-shredding guitar spew sparks in every direction. An obvious acolyte of Converge and Meshuggah, the Extravaganza provide plenty of neck-snapping turns, though it doesn't match the Dillinger Escape Plan's roller coaster loops for finesse; instead, they go for a propulsive grind-groove, like busting figure eights in the concrete with a Transformer. There's nothing you can hum to your girlfriend, nor clever lyrics to quote your friends, but the trigo-metal rumble is more enveloping than a car wash-you get lost inside the surround-sound intensity. The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza is among the most brutal extreme metal forces in the music industry today. They have stepped up from being a heavy band, ravaging halls and basements across the south, to becoming a national phenomenon. This last year has seen the Tapdance Extravaganza using the entirety of the United States as target practice and cramming their tech-metal-mosh style down the throats of everyone in their path.
Their newest opus, “Danza II: The Electric Boogaloo” barrels through one breakdown after the next, successively building on and expanding some of the tightest grooves tech metal has to offer. The schizophrenic high-end guitars provide a blanket of psychotic assault amidst massive, dense, tech breakdowns that will have you slipping, sliding, and dancing every which way. For a band that flirts with frequent grind drums and fret explosions, the musicianship on “Danza II” is alarmingly tight with virtually no rough edges or faltering drum work. “Danza II” succeeds in staying true to the bands past endeavors while incorporating new elements into the music.
