Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
Tony Spades, I’m a product of Brooklyn, NY, where I spent my early years moving all over the
Borough of Brooklyn. My family is from downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene Projects, but I
also lived in the East New York, Bed-Stuy, and Flatbush areas of Brooklyn. I have been a Hip-
Hop Artist from the age of ten, developing most of his musical styling and music appreciation
from family and friends in his neighborhood of Downtown Brooklyn. I spent 8 years in Philly,
my second home, and there is where I met my business partner, Adychshun, and started my
record label FreedomBorn Records. Many years of mixtapes and one completed album “Hungry”,
released December, 15th 2010, has brought me to this point in my musical career.

What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see?
My first album release was as part of my group F.A.M (Foreva About Money). So right
now I’m taking some time to work on my solo ventures. Currently I’m working on an
Album/Mixtape entitled “Best Kept Secret Vol. 1”. I think compared to the group project,
this release will do a better job at showing my versatility as an artist and producer. I have
produced most of the tracks on the project thus far. But also got to work with some new
producers as well which helped to diversify the music. It’s all original music but right
now just want to build my name and perform a lot this year. So that’s the reason for
doing the Album as a Mixtape instead of your traditional Album release.

What is one of the most drastic changes you’ve made about yourself in the last year?
The last year I have elevated my game as a producer and an engineer. I upgraded my
studio big time. This has allowed me to do more with my music, despite my ridiculously
busy and awkward schedule. But the biggest difference is I have finally found my
formula for producing hot tracks. I got my crew buzzing, and a lot of people coming to
me to lease tracks, or buy them exclusively. Most of them end up wanting to collaborate
with me after they here some of my completed songs. So its been a good experience.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
I think the hardest challenge I’ve had to face, and maybe continue to face, is exposure.
One of the most difficult things in the music industry is getting the music to put so much
energy and effort into, out to the rest of the world to enjoy. For the last ten years when
someone has heard my music, I’ve gotten the same response. Why are you not on the
radio? Why aren’t you on tour somewhere? I appreciate the compliment but it does bring
some frustration to the forefront.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
That’s an easy one. In 2002 I finished a solo album and never released it. I had some
industry friends listen to it and they all agreed the production quality on it was poor. I
had just started building my studio and I had all these lyrics. So I figure I practice and
learn by making an album. Back in the day I used write verses, verses, and more verses.
I had books of rhymes for days. Even though the first project got shot down for the
production quality everyone agreed my lyrics were tight. So I hooked up with a producer,
who owned a studio in my old hood Downtown Brooklyn. So I wrote enough songs for 2
albums in two books. The first day we were supposed to start recording the new album, I
drove down to the old neighborhood to see some old friends before I hit the studio. Well
when I came back out to my car, I saw the window was broken, my radio was stolen, and
my brand new Timberland bag was gone. The bag contained 2 books of lyrics and all
my new musical production. Six months of my heart and soul, were gone in an instance.
After that I wanted to just give up on the music. I figured at that po - WWS Magazine
