The band started out as Smeagol's Workshop in Sydney Australia and was a fusion between Dub reggae and Jazz, sporting a complicated live setup to perform LIVE dub and to champion the freestyle music of Miles Davis in his fusion period in the 60's and 70's. The unique sound of the band came from the way the musicians used the freedom of form and the language of the genre it was inhabiting at that moment. The concept was to use the sound pallate of the genre we were playing (eg, dub) and stretch it and interact much like a workshop would, the tunes had a set melody and chords, but an interactive form and interpretation, due to the audience and venue. At present the workshop is in London and as a result has changed it's sound, working more with drum and bass, breakbeat and world music sounds representative of London, (or our experience of London anyway).
