BandRockAlternative

Be warned: Tony Youngblood's music is low-fi, sweaty, and desperate. Call it "experimental-rust-folk", reminiscent of Tom Waits, Frank Black, P.J. Harvey, Okkervil River, Iggy Pop, Beck, Lucinda Williams, a bottle of tears, and sweat-soaked scarf.

Biography

Tony's song "Rocks Under Bare Feet and Dreams" garnered an honorable mention and made the finals of the International Songwriting Competition for the category Lyrics Only. Judges included Tom Waits, Robert Smith, Frank Black, Brian Wilson and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Hearing Tony Youngblood play live, one would think he was raised in the wilderness by a pack of wolves. Someone should really teach him how to play the guitar properly. He flicks it bare hand and bare knuckled, beats, spider-spins, pounds, slaps, strokes and makes strings do unseemly things. Same for singing. He groans guttural, whoops, hollers, and carves the air with a deep, raspy dirge. Nevertheless, it fits. When he’s on stage, the room will get darker or glow brighter – the ale will taste sweeter or more sour -- and the end of the show, you won’t know exactly what you’ve heard, but you will know this: you’ve heard something real.

Rocks Under Bare Feet and Dreams

Written By: Tony Youngblood

A thorn and a thrill
A kiss and a chill
A stall and a still in the breeze

A joy and a page
A fear and a stage
A thirst and a cage with no keys

The lowest of lows and mouth-melted snow
A cigarette glow and a scheme

To know who you are and billions of stars
A yard-sale guitar and a gleam

Rocks under bare feet and dreams

A drink and some fun
A few more and none
An idea and undersized shoes

To laugh and to long
To cry and be strong
An up-tempo song and the blues

A lash from the whip, a heart scarred and stripped
A rage and a rip at the seams

The grit of the sand, to yet understand
Convergence of strands (and of streams)

Rocks under bare feet and dreams

A cold biting rain, the will to sustain
Adventure and train engine steam

A love true and rare and pure country air
Your smile and a caring supreme

Rocks under bare feet and dreams
Rocks under bare feet and dreams

End of the Day

Written By: Tony Youngblood

I’m stuck to the floor, I’m held up and high
I don’t want to live, I don’t want to die
Maryam said that I don’t try
I guess that it’s true
if she only knew

The puddles, they ripple, as feet hit the ground
The dirt rises up and then goes down
Lately I wish someone would pound
Me into shape
Or at least awake

Don’t do this
Rip right through this
Find some lost way

Cold concrete
Low pile
Loose sheets
Slow fade to grey
I can’t find the way
To the end of the day

My head is a mess, I can’t find the flow
In it’s too fast and out it’s too slow
I’d give anything to make it go
I focus on pain
And reflecting rain

I shut myself up in this pretty prison
It’s better than making a fucking decision
lately I pray for a collision
to make it okay
or all go away

Don’t do this
Rip right through this
Find some lost way

Cold concrete
Low pile
Loose sheets
Slow fade to grey
I’m chasin’ away
the end of the day

I’m soaked up on drugs and old photographs
The edges are charred and some miss a half
I break down and cry when I hear your laugh
You put me away
I’m still there today

The weather outside is turning white
And slowly I crave some natural light
Should I take a risk or just sit tight?
I kinda miss snow
We’ll see how it goes

Don’t do this
Rip right through this
Find some lost way

Cold concrete
Low pile
Loose sheets
Slow fade to grey
I’m losin’ the way
To the end of the day

Scary Ride

Written By: Tony Youngblood

you push me in the line
ain't feeling very fine
the hall is dark
and tears run down my face

this ain't no children's ride
i can't believe you lied
i hear the screams
lost somewhere in space

don't want on the scary ride
i just wanna wait outside

don't want on the scary ride
i just wanna wait outside

the floor begins to shake
this was a bad mistake
oh mommy please
please don't make me ride

we see the rocket ships
and hear the warning clips
"please watch your step
and keep your hands inside"

don't want on the scary ride
i just wanna wait outside

don't want on the scary ride
i just wanna run and hide

my sisters says to me
"It's really fun, you'll see"
We reach the front
And my heart starts to pound

A coaster stops, unloads
And we're in the front row!
Dad pulls me in
The lap bar locks me down

now I'm on the scary ride
I sure wish I was outside

now I'm on the scary ride
i just wanna run and hide

We walk exit way
I don't know what to say
I'm shaking bad
We wait for photograph

We flash onto the screen
I bet I'll wear a scream
but no, a smile,
And I just have to laugh

I went on the scary ride
I'm too big to wait outside

I want on the scary ride
I don't wanna wait outside
