Bio

'Toon Roos belongs to the best tenor sax players of Holland. He’s multi-faceted, plays in the most diverse ensembles, and when it comes to command of the sax, he stands out from all the rest. There is an enormous expressiveness in his performance. His instantly recognisable sound on the tenor sax is round and flexible. Toon Roos disposes of great harmonious insight, fluent melody and robust timing.
Although his roots are traditional, Toon Roos is part of the modern generation of jazz musicians who know no stylistic borders, and with that is a worthy exponent of the current state of affairs in jazz music.'
JURY RAPPORT BIRD AWARD - NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2001

'In New York there are so many saxophone players who play so many notes that the notes loose their musical meaning. But your playing is so well balanced that every note has a musical meaning. That's great!'
WALTER BECKER - STEELY DAN

'That's some beautiful music, man... You've got a real soprano sound!'
MARCUS MILLER on cd 'Free At Last'

Eversince 1984 Dutch tenor/soprano saxophonist, composer and Bird Award winner Toon Roos has been highly appreciated both in The Netherlands and abroad by critics, audiences and colleagues for his lyricism, intense expressiveness and originality.
Toon found his own musical voice at an early age. He felt comfortable in different styles of music, from the big band swing tradition to hardbop, from bossa nova to funk and fusion. Over the years Toon has developed his own intuitive, generous and well balanced style of playing.

2ND PRIZE INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION 2004

Recently Toon has won the 2nd prize of the International Songwriting Competition 2004 in Nashville with his composition 'Reach For the Rose'. The competition had more than 11.000 entries from 77 countries. The Jazz category, judged by amongst others Branford Marsalis, had more than a 1000 entries. Toon also received an 'honourable mention' for his second composition 'Vienna's Touch', performed in duet with Toots Thielemans.

TOON ROOS GROUP - FREE AT LAST

On his fourth album Free At Last, the new Toon Roos Group reaches the highest possible inspiration in their 'sensual fusion', blending jazz, funk, rock, latin, African and other elements into a thing of their own. The chemistry of the group is unique. Their music often starts out spacious, building up to an intense groove. The heat they produce is especially felt in the live recordings on this album that also contains some overwhelming studio tracks. Most of the songs are composed by Toon and his band members. The Toon Roos Group combines some of the best Dutch jazz/pop musicians who have performed with world top artists such as Toots Thielemans, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Haslip, Philip Catherine, Bob Mintzer, Jan Akkerman, Dave Weckl, Chaka Kahn, George Duke, Gino Vanelli and Prince.

JazzImprov.com on 'Portrait of a Silk Thread':
'It all came together in January 1995, when Portrait of a Silk Thread was recorded. The results speak beautifully for themselves. The release of Portrait of a Silk Thread is an historic event in jazz, for it demonstrates that Billy Strayhorn deserves his own place in the ranks of the great jazz composers.'
