"TooTawl: House on the Moon EP review"

Irish artist Richard O’Gorman set off for Nashville in the summer of 2014 and threw himself into the local live scene armed only with his guitar and singing skills. His substantial six foot four height earned him the nickname TooTawl from a hobo on the street and after it stuck, he decided to use it as the alias under which to write and perform his enticing assortment of folk songs.

Right now he’s busy celebrating the release of his debut EP, House on the Moon, which arrived on November 26th. It opens with the affecting acoustic guitar of its title track, ahead of a clear and concise melody. Its sound is solemn yet optimistic, growing through stirring strings, riveting riffs and vivid vocals to get things off to a touching start.

“Falling for You” is an upbeat affair that trucks enthrallingly through enlivening instrumentation and a heartfelt harmony. It’s all very bright and buoyant, uplifting as it unfolds. Its sunny style is guaranteed to put smiles on faces and turn any frowns upside down.

“Tried My Hand” begins laid-back, before speeding up and fusing elements of folk, country and Americana to forge a frantic affair that stays exciting all the way through to the restrained yet eloquent refrain of “About Love”. This delicate ditty is a heartwarming addition that progresses pleasantly. The music grows gradually, eventually bursting into an exhibition of emotional instrumental elements that bring the proceedings to a poignant finish.

TooTawl has put together a touching debut, whose harmless humour makes it extremely accessible. There’s a traditional trait about it all, which allows it to appear personal, while also embracing the influence that his time abroad has had on him. You can find Home on the Moon on Bandcamp now. - Pure M Magazine

Bio

Standing at six foot five, Irishman Richard O’ Gorman was christened ‘too tawl’ whilst in Nashville, Tennessee, playing his brand of bustling indie/folk in such famous venues as The Bluebird. Upon his arrival home with this new title, he began working on his debut EP as Tootawl.

Since his time in Tennessee, Tootawl has released two EPs, received widespread national radio airplay, and toured extensively (London, Berlin, Edinburgh, San Francisco & Los Angeles). He also had his song ‘House On The Moon’ played in an episode of the Netflix original series 'You Me Her'.

In June of last year, Tootawl moved to London, and is currently working on new material for his first full length LP.
