New Music: Toro y Moi: "Master of None" (Beach House cover) [Stream]

Baltimore male/female duo Beach House peered out from the narcoticized haze of last year's excellent self-titled debut on the stately, regretful "Master of None". Toro y Moi, the side project of Columbia, S.C.-based the Heist and the Accomplice frontman Chaz Bundick, thicken the clouds between us and the song with fuzzy electronics on this otherwise basically faithful cover. Where Victoria Legrand's powerful vocal helped the original "Master of None" hold its own on Beach House, Bundick's wispy singing brings the track closer to the dreamier works of cited influences like Broken Social Scene. Bundick also trades the slide guitars of Beach House's Alex Scally for slightly noisier playing, amid synthesized buzzing and ringing. It would be somewhat ironic if "Master of None", which describes a failed "jack of all trades", turned out to the be the kind of song that sounds good in a variety of styles. Toro y Moi's cover changes things just a bit, just in time for autumn. - Mark Hogan

Toro y Moi

My friend B.K. told me about Toro y Moi a few weeks ago. Toro y Moi is the side project of Chaz Bundick, the front man for Columbia, SC-based band, The Heist and the Accomplice. I listened to a couple of tracks on the myspace page and was instantly hooked. So I e-mailed Chaz and he sent me 19 tracks of his material. Holy moly! It's really good stuff, definitely with some Animal Collective tendencies--there's a multitude of sonic elements present--but much easier to digest. Bundick lists influences ranging from the aforementioned clan to Devendra Banhart to David Bazan. But in all honesty, Toro y Moi is just Toro y Moi. Bundick's plaintive vocals are beautifully layered over an intriguing blend of kaleidoscopic folk and rock to create original, well written songs. To think that he does it all himself makes it that much better. Here's to hoping that Chaz releases an album soon. - Jay Steele

Toro y Moi

For maybe a year now, I've been telling all kinds of people about South Carolinian solo music project Toro y Moi. Now Broseph alerts me to the fact that he's been mentioned by Pitchfork, which generates slightly more traffic than this particular blog.

He'll probably have a deal with Merge and be on the cover of AP in a week or two, so stay slightly ahead of the curve by adding him on myspace right now. - Sloan
