Biography

Tory Tompkins is a 21 year old singer, guitarist and songwriter born and raised in Houston, Texas. The only child of an oilman and actress Bond Gideon (The Young and the Restless, Gold of the Amazon Women) she began playing piano at the age of five, but by age 11 began rebelling against her piano teacher by improvising while playing classical music pieces. She grew up listening to classic rock, loving the likes of Foreigner, the Who, and Led Zeppelin, which would later come to influence her music. Her all time favorite was the 70s rock group Heart, which inspired her to begin singing

In the eighth grade she picked up the electric guitar, a late 70s Japanese Ibanez Studio Electric, which she cherishes and still plays today. At 15 she became lead singer and guitarist in a pop/jazz band called Quid Pro Quo, which played the Houston ice house scene. Unfortunately, the group was short-lived and her junior year in high school her former band mates graduated and went off to college. She became heavily involved in musical theater, and considered skipping college and going to Broadway.

In her late teens she was introduced to the music of Yes and Andrew Bird, which inspired her to pick up the acoustic guitar. She began hitting up the open mike scene, and this eventually led to solo, mostly cover gigs at Big John’s Ice House, Café Europe, Dan Electros, Patty's Bar and Grill, and others.

In 2007 she moved to Austin, TX to attend the University of Texas. With musical theater no longer as an outlet, she delved deeper into writing and composing her own original music. She had always enjoyed performing, but for the first time she began to fall in love with the composition process itself. She began inundating herself with music, ears constantly alert for a melody, a notebook always in hand for whenever a song walked past (sometimes literally). Often she can be seen with her guitar composing on the outside patio of Austin’s favorite funky tea house, Spider House Café.

Unwilling to forget her rock roots, Tory’s music could be described as “acoustic folk that somehow morphs into rock and then sometimes back again.” A lover of atypical chord schemes and surprising, hard-hitting bridges, she strives to tell a story not only with words but the music behind it. Her enthusiasm for exploring moods and musical styles is evident by the variety of her songs.

Currently Tory is gigging in the Austin and Houston areas and working on her EP.

Lyrics

Gypsy

Written By: Tory Tompkins

VERSE 1:
I was drawn to the music
Like an orphan to a fire
From this ice covered sidewalk
To the one man choir
A king holding court in the window
A guitar in his arms
Surrounded by adoring faces
I felt myself growing warm

PRE CHORUS:
Was is the man, or was it the music?
I’ve felt this kind of thing before
A gypsy song and a wild guitar
Black eyes smiling, an open door
But oh, oh…

CHORUS:
Wondering what I’m doing here
Can he tell me?
My body’s trembling he’s so near
What does he see?
Butterflies stir deep inside
And the music makes me feel so alive
Who’s the man behind the smile?
I need to know. I need to know

VERSE 2:
I was drawn to the music
Like a child to the rain
From a street going nowhere
To this dangerous game
The touch of your skin leaves me breathless
And I know I should run
But your magic is taking me over
It’s already begun

PRE CHORUS:
Was it the man, or was it the music
My passion seems to blur the lines
It’s hard to tell if it’s rhyme or reason
Could be love, or it might be treason
But oh, oh…

CHORUS:
Wondering what I’m doing here
Can he tell me?
My body’s trembling he’s so near
What does he see?
Butterflies stir deep inside
And the music makes me feel so alive
Where’s the soul behind the smile
I need to know

BRIDGE:
I can hear him singing
Come with me follow me home
I’ll show you a world of your own
Where dreams aren’t just tears of surprise
That hide at the back of your eyes

REPRISE:
I was drawn to the music….

The Little Tramp

Written By: Tory Tompkins

SPEAKING INTRO: Ladies and gentlemen, I give you one of the greatest entertainers of all time—the legendary, Mr. Charles Spencer Chaplin.

VERSE 1:
Baggy pants and derby,
Innocent or surly,
His silence speaks
Louder than words.

A vagrant and a dancer
A rascal and romancer,
A gypsy, an actor, a clown.

The jester brings us laughter
Perspective on disaster
When we are lost.

Earnestly disarming
This raggedy Prince Charming
The tramp who loved to dance…

CHORUS:
Dance, Charlie, dance
The Little Tramp lives on
You waltzed your way
Into our hearts,
Did all that you could

Laugh, Charlie, laugh
Our memories are good
The silver screen loves you
And Hitler despised you…..
That’s good.

VERSE 2:
Floppy shoes and gold dust,
Mustache like a toothbrush
Your fashion speaks
Louder than words.

Ambassador or tailor,
Aristocrat or sailor
A soldier, a convict, a swine…
Charlie gave us language
A bamboo and a cane bridge
That we can cross.

Intriguingly alarming,
This poor-man’s Prince Charming
The tramp who loved to…

CHORUS:
Dance, Charlie, dance
The Little Tramp lives on.
You waltzed your way
Into our hearts,
This song is for you.

Laugh, Charlie, laugh
Your legend is secure.
Your image defined you,
And history refined you…
That’s good.

BRIDGE:
(Vocal improvisation)

REPRISE:
The silver screen loves you
And Hitler despised you…..
That’s good
That’s good

White Water

Written By: Tory Tompkins

VERSE:
The desert moon shines down upon my face,
And I smile
The stars all turn their backs on me
But I refuse to die here
Cold black canyons yawn at my feet
But I see
Iridescent scorpions of light far beneath

CHORUS:
Whitewater my brother
No my distant lover
I hear you calling me
Whitewater, my freedom
No my raging Eden
Take me with you please

VERSE:
The canyon path winds blindly into space
And I smile
Ghosts cry out from hallowed walls
But I refuse to kneel here
Cold black canyons yawn at my feet
But I see
Whispered colors fading into light
Now I can breathe

CHORUS:
Whitewater my brother
No my distant lover
I hear you calling me
Whitewater, my freedom
No my raging Eden
Take me with you please

BRIDGE:
Wading through water
Wading through time
But I won’t be there when you blow your mind
My chains are broken
My heart is in pieces
But my spirit’s whole

REPRISE:
Whitewater my brother
No my distant lover
I hear you calling me

CHORUS:
Whitewater my brother
No my distant lover
I hear you calling me
Whitewater, my freedom
No my raging Eden
Take me with you please
