"Songwriters, bands raise money for scholars"

Come Saturday, Brice Long doesn’t want to be “Anywhere but Here.”

That’s just the way he and Shoals Scholar Dollars likes it.

Long will be performing with other country music songwriters Wayne Carson and Jerry Salley as they, along with local group Tosha Hill, Big Brothers and Company, raise money for the scholarship program.

“I feel like being blessed and having success in a business like we’re in, writing songs and playing music and stuff ... it’s good for us to give pack,” said Long. “Because in what we do, without people enjoying it and buying it and supporting our music than we couldn’t do what we do.”

Scholar Dollars was formed by the Florence and Sheffield Rotary clubs and aims to provide scholarships for area students to attend Northwest-Shoals Community College.

Kevin Lamb, a Nashville music publisher who is helping organize the concert, said the songwriters are donating their time.

“All of us that can make a living doing what it is that we love to do are very blessed to be able to do that,” said Lamb. “Certainly when you get the chance to help someone, you want to do that.”

Tosha Hill, a local up-and- coming musician said her set will feature original material.

“We love to make people happy, but not only that but to make them cry if need be,” Hill said of her group’s Americana and folk- influenced sound. “If it helps someone, that’s what it’s all about.”

Long, a singer-songwriter, has had success in Nashville with his single “Anywhere but Here” which reached No. 51 in 2005. He also co-wrote Gary Allan’s 2004 hit single “Nothing On but the Radio.”

In addition to Long, Carson and Salley will play some of their hits they’ve written.

Carson’s hits include “Always on My Mind” and “The Letter.” He also has had a productive solo bluegrass career.

Salley’s has written “His Strength Is Perfect,” and “I’m Gonna Take That Mountain” among others and was named the 2003 SESAC Country Music Songwriter of the Year.

“The thing people should expect is to hear some of their favorite hit songs performed by the actual writers that wrote them,” said Long. “And that’s our perspective on it, the story behind the song, why we wrote it, what made us want to write it and where it came from. Then the performance of it, they’ve heard it all on the radio by the artist that has sung them, but this is the way we wrote them.”

"Party First"

Whenever politicians gather, you can bet there’ll be a party somewhere and often music. Tuesday night’s final orientation session will be at The Dome at The University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium.

North Alabamians will not only be part of the crowd but also key players in the entertainment.

Tosha Hill, a 17-year-old Florence high school student, will sing with the House Band, made up of musicians who are legislators and Statehouse employees.

“It’s going to be great,” said Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow, D-Red Hill, who introduced Hill to House Band members Reps. Mike Ball and Phil Williams, both Huntsville Republicans, and House Clerk Greg Pappas. They and other House members often play together during legislative sessions, sometimes at clubs in Montgomery and other locations.

Hill, who is now home schooled so she can sing more frequently, has performed with Randy Owen and sings frequently at Shoals area events. She said she likes rock ’n’ roll, blues and gospel. Performing at Bryant-Denny before the Legislature is exciting, she said.

“This will be my first time to sing before a group like this,” she said. A glance at her videos online shows her singing ability.

Hill said her parents and three brothers will be there as well. - Decatur Daily

"Donnie Fritts hosts ‘Silent Night, Funky Night’"

Donnie Fritts is sometimes called "Funky Donnie" and sometimes called "The Alabama Leaning Man," but the nickname stuff is but a tiny part of the attraction.

Fritts spent years as a member of Kris Kristofferson's band, he acted in three Sam Peckinpah movies, and his songs have been recorded by Kristofferson, Ray Charles, Charlie Rich, John Prine, Jerry Lee Lewis and many more.

He's also a good buddy to many seasoned and celebrated Nashville musicians, some of whom are likely to show up and sit in at Douglas Corner on Thursday, Dec. 9 for what Fritts is calling "Silent Night, Funky Night."

Fritts is excited about seeing old friends, but equally excited to bring Muscle Shoals, Ala.-based Tosha Hill to showcase on his "Funky Night" in Nashville.

"This kid is like 17 years old, and she's the best young singer I've ever heard," said Fritts, who has heard more than a few.

Douglas Corner is located at 2106-A 8th Ave. S. Tickets for the 8:30 p.m. show are $10, available at the door.

"Silent Night, Funky Night feat. Donnie Fritts and the Decoys & Tosha Hill"

If anybody can testify to the curative powers of soul, it’s the man Kris Kristofferson immortalized as “Funky Donnie Fritts” in “The Pilgrim: Chapter 33” — a Muscle Shoals stalwart who’s shaken off some of the toughest punches life throws. A part of cultural landmarks as diverse as Dusty in Memphis and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia — he was part of Sam Peckinpah’s late-career stock company — he’s the most unassuming of music legends, even if no less a luminary than Elvis Costello told the Scene’s Adam Gold that meeting Fritts was a highlight of his recent Music City sessions. Tonight he and his whipcrack band the Decoys will be playing anything from R&B to Christmas carols, with no advance word about which of his gifted buddies might show up unannounced. But watch for special guest Tosha Hill, a 17-year-old soul vocalist Fritts swears is the real deal.

Bio

My name is Tosha Hill and Im nineteen years old. Im an Americana singer, songwriter, and musician born and raised in Florence, Alabama. My influences are widely diverse, ranging from Janis Joplin to Emmylou Harris. I am passionate about writing and singing songs that are real and that can conform to any one person, no matter their age or background. "This kid is like 17 years old, and she's the best young singer I've ever heard," said Fritts, who has heard more than a few. Nashville Scene DEC. 2010

I perform regularly at local and out of town venues and events. To name a few such as: Swampers with Special Guests Marie Tomlinson Lewey, Donnie Fritts, and more. FloBama, and McGraws Coffee House, Spring Park for Handy Fest and such. I also get together with my brothers Josh and Caleb, and write on weeknights. Im a member of the praise team at our home church, Christ Chapel, in Petersville, AL. We are currently writing and performing our original material which has been quite an exciting journey for us, to say the least.

My love for music began to grow when I was young. My parents Billy and Tina Hill, had cassette tapes around the house and my brothers and I would jam out to songs like, Tutti Frutti and Who Wrote The Book Of Love? When the working day was done at our family owned furniture manufacturing business, we would stay up late to sing while dad thumped on his old rhythm guitar. I attended Waterloo High School and I began songwriting in my fifth grade year. By sixth grade, I wanted to learn guitar, so my brother Josh showed me a couple of chords. My eighth grade year was a big step for me. I competed in my school talent show, sang Hold Me While I Cry, and won first place. My English teacher at the time encouraged me to compete in other competitions as well. One being Shoals Star II, which I took home first place. Then on to the North Alabama State Fair in 2007 and 2008 and was runner up. I then began to perform on local television stations in Russellville, Alabama, Booneville, Mississippi , Adamsville, Tennessee, and Red Bay, Alabama., and also several venues in the surrounding areas. In my Freshman year of high school, I was in Beta Club. I competed in the Special Talent, at the National Beta Convention held at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center, and received runner up. I also had the honor to be asked to perform for our Mayor of Florence Bobby Irons for his 2008 campaign. In 2009 I competed at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Talent Expo and won first place with local legendary songwriter Earl Peanut Montgomerys song, One of These Days. In my Sophomore year, I recorded my first album and began home schooling to pursue my passion for music and continue my education.

My band mainly consists of my two brothers and I. The eldest of the two is Josh Hill, 25. He is a songwriter, guitarist, and backup vocalist. Caleb, 23, is our drummer, songwriter, and backup vocalist. We have played at several various festivities, charitable events, private occasions, out-of-state-venues, and local venues. As for my solo acts, I have performed with Randy Owen, of the Country super group Alabama, for two consecutive years for Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranch charity event. I have performed with local legendary singer, songwriter Donnie Fritts at various events. One of which I performed with Donnie and The Decoys at The Douglas Corner Caf in Nashville, featured in the Nashville Scene., Dec. 2010. Our group, Tosha Hill & Big Brothers, along with Special Guests Donnie Fritts and Scott Boyer, were featured on the Rockin at the Roxy Show for the Kerry Gilbert Band. I have also had the opportunity to perform with The House Band, alongside two of the Alabamas Reps. Phil Williams (guitar) and Mike Ball (fiddle), for Governor Robert Bentley, during the Legislative Orientation, in December of 2010 at the Bryant- Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Ive also performed at Pucketts Grocery in Leipers Fork, Tennessee, The Bluebird Caf, and Tootsies in Nashville. Recently, I have worked with Rick Hall at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Tommy Jackson with First Note Productions as a songwriter.
We enjoy writing, performing, and recording. It never gets old to hear fans and people that we meet say, Wow! You really wrote that? or That really touched me., with tears in their eyes. Thats what tells us were on the right track.
