Bio

My first impression of Total Strangers’ music after meeting with the band in its Bridge City jam space was that it’s happy.

The grooves are all very butt-friendly. Think of a band like Phoenix or an overall less busy This Town Needs Guns. Much of the bass-playing sounds almost disco-inspired and is accompanied by vintage synthesizer tones and Fender guitars almost washed out with reverb.

The tight rhythm section and flowing guitar and keyboard sounds lay a strong foundation for lead vocalist Omar Garcia’s voice. He and keyboardist Chelsea Phillips harmonize well with the refreshing approach of using vocals not as a conveyor of only words through melody but also sound — very instrumental, almost percussive.

Should the listener choose to focus predominantly on the group’s instrumental aspects, the interesting and interweaving relationship between Derick Thacker’s guitar parts and Michael Beard’s infectious basslines will not disappoint. Neither will drummer Mason Leleux’s solid and tasteful drum fills. - Jake Hollier is a freelance writer.
