Toya Delazy is one of those people that makes you curious the first time you here her music. It's catchy and has a vibe all its own, so I'm pleased the whole album represents all of that and delivers.

I love Delazy's wide appeal. Truthfully, upon first hearing her music, I had no idea if she was black or white, South African of not. But it matters not! She has produced a great first album, definitely worth my money.

I have my favourites on Due Drop, but I had fun listening from the intro all through to the last song.

The intro is a fun way to start the album and featuring The Soil was a good call as they feel like they belong in the fold with Delazy.

Are you gonna stay is a mid tempo song, slightly heavy on the bass for my liking, but it's a young and a sweet song.

Heart is one of my favourites, it makes me wish I was a dancer. Hey, I can at least pretend to be one in the privacy (or not) of my car.

Love is in the air makes for great transition from Heart, but it has its own sass. I love the fun and spunky parts of this song, very sing-along and fun.

I think Yeah hell yeah was the first song of Delazy's I heard on the radio, which 'had me at hello!' This is one of those songs one would wonder if you're living under the rock if you don't know.

Memoriam is my absolute favourite song on this album. It takes me back. Where to? I have no idea, but something deep and almost haunting in it's familiarity resonates with me on a deep level. Who knew I'd find that in this album?

Pump it on is probably Delazy's most known songs, and deservedly so. It's a displays of what I imagine to be Delazy's fun side. It's a fun song and makes one wanna live loud and proud!

Love takes time is not my favourite, but I can see it having it's own audience. It's a sweet song, and the lyrics are well written, with music to my untrained ear.

I can do without It's all good. It does however, fit in with the rest of the album, but may be a little more edge than I like.

Jai lover is a breath of fresh air, also one of those that make me wanna shake something without being too much of a dance tune. The use of Zulu was a pleasant surprise.

I almost wish the album had ended here, especially because Say it out feels a little bit like I'd heard it earlier in the album. It's not a bad song, but doesn't do anything for me, or this album.

Rating: 8/10 - Times Live

"VIDEO PREMIERE + INTERVIEW: TOYA DELAZY TACKLES XENOPHOBIA, RACISM & HOMOPHOBIA HEAD ON WITH BOLD NEW ANTHEM, "WHY HATE?""

22.08.2015 - Back in 2013, South African Lesbian Duduzile Zozo was brutally raped and murdered in her home. Duduzile was found with a toilet brush inside of her, the heinous act considered an attempt at a “corrective rape”. Many took to the streets of South Africa to protest against the horrific murder. SA artist Toya Delazy was deeply moved by Duduzil’s murder and following a conversation with photographer Zanele Mohuli, penned the track, “Why Hate?” The song tackles the growing climate of hate across the globe and, more recently, the homophobic/ xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Today we're premiering the track's video, co-directed by Toya Delazy and Lesedi Rudolf (from Your Girlfriend productions); and featuring fans, following Toya's call on Facebook, friends, soccer player Portia Modise, comedian Donovan Goliath and singer Moonchild. Check it out below. Plus, our interview with the musician, in which she spoke to us candidly about her music and about the racial tension in Africa. - Afropunk

Bio

Pianist, producer, rapper and singer-songwriter Latoya Buthelezi, known as the dynamic  jazz-electro-hip-pop phenom Toya Delazy, has made her mark as one of the finest performers to break new ground in the South Africa’s burgeoning music industry. At age 9 she began to train in classical piano, and attended Howard College’s Jazz Programme in 2009. Due to her exposure to different influences, from jazz to classical, electro and hip hop, she pieced together the different nuances, performing around Durban’s pubs before successfully being scouted by Sony Music Africa, and performing at the 2011 Africa Concert in Johannesburg. Toya eventually signed to the label and released her debut album “Due Drop” in April 2012.

With more than 1600 radio plays and 300 000 Youtube views, her first single “Pump It On” dominated across the country Top 40 for 16 weeks and beyond, with the iconic video, propelling the track into viral status across Pan-African channels including MTV Base, Trace TV, Channel O and OkayAfrica. The “live life to the fullest” concept behind the track prompted Reebok to recruit her as a brand ambassador. With following singles “Heart,” “Love Is In The Air” and “Are You Gonna Stay”, Due Drop soon reached Gold status and got Awarded as Newcomer of The Year, Best Pop Album and Best Produced at the 2013 South African Music Awards and a BET Award Nomination for Best International Act. After a 200 dates Tour across Southern Africa, between 2012 and 2014, Toya appeared as guest on X-Factor, Idols and opened for Paolo Nutini and Ne-Yo during their African Tour.

In 2014-2015, with the release of her 2nd album “Ascension”, Toya reaches international levels, headlining at the Apollo Theater NYC, scoping 3 nominations at the International Out Music Awards and recently headlining a SOFAR showcase in London.
