"Monthly Up and Coming Artist Mix : TOYO"

Next up to the plate, a young up and comer hailing from Canberra, let us introduce TOYO.

He's thrown together a class mix for this month's addition, he's even been kind enough to share some unreleased material with us. We, of course, had to ask him how he had chosen to use his 3o minutes, alongside some other generic (yet essential) questions as we get to know this …. just a little bit better. Tracklisting will be below.

So, the mix, what do you have planned for us?

The mix kicks off with one of my newest original tracks as a special treat for you all. I've also decided to include a lot of tracks from some amazing up and coming artists and friends because I felt that this is a great way to show their hard work to some new listeners. I really wanted to use this 30 minutes to take the listeners on a journey. There is some really lush sounding stuff but I also wanted to keep it interesting by adding a few songs that still have that really thick sub bass, low end feel to them.

How long would you say, you been doing what you do?

Toyo has been in the works since 2014 but I hadn't released any music at the time. I was more focusing on the production side of things, honing my craft as I knew that the Australian electronic scene was stronger than ever and I really wanted to make sure that the music I was writing was up there with the standard of some of the other producers hailing out of Australia. I started making music back in 2013 but only really started taking it seriously when I had written my first song 'Wonderlust' which was early 2014. So I guess I have been producing for 4 years now…wow that has gone by quick!

Can you remember what really pushed you towards the darkside? into the dark arts of electronic music.

I actually come from a screamo/metal background. I've been in and out of bands ever since I was young so music has always been a really big part of my life.
Growing up I was listening to all types of music – hip-hop, rock, punk, even Enya! I actually didn't get to go to my year 10 graduation because I was on tour in Perth with my band at the time haha! The thing that got me into electronic music would have to be Fatboy Slim. I loved the crazy sounds that he made and was a huge fan. I actually remember thinking to myself "Man I wish I could do that!" but never really thought it would be possible. I mean I played guitar, keys and drums back then but the thought of making a song from scratch on my computer was something I always wanted to do and never thought would be possible.

Recently, saw you receiving some props from SAFIA, ey ey, whats story there!?

Yeah, that's right! they recently put Toyo in their top 5 up and coming artists to check out. I am a big fan of what Safia do and having the support shown by not only an artist of that calibre but also Triple J Unearthed and their listeners is truly amazing. Being noticed for all the hard work you put in is such a rewarding feeling!

So, not only support from acts like SAFIA, buts also supporting acts like Chvrches! How was that ?

Yeah, definitely stand out moment for me. The fact I got to support Chvrches and it was in my hometown of Canberra was just too good! and the feeling of hearing your own tracks that you produced in your little bedroom on a big sound system like that, as well as having everyone in the crowd really loving it, was something really special to me.

Gun to ya head, how would you describe your sound if you had to?

hmmm, I would say that in the past year my sound has progressed. 'Wonderlust', my first ever song was more on the downtempo/ambient side of things and while I've grown as an artist since then I'd say I am still trying to find my sound. I find I'm always experimenting with different styles of music as I don't want to be stuck writing one genre. That's why I love music so much, you can experiment with it – there is no rules! One thing that hasn't changed at all is that regardless of genre I want my music to take people on a journey.

& what's the game plan from here out ?

My game plan for the rest of 16 is to just tour and write more music! I recently released tour dates for Australia & New Zealand where I'll be playing an array of festivals such as Subsonic, Banana Field and Bohemian Beatfreaks in Byron which I'm super excited for! I'm also currently in the process of writing my debut EP titled 'Cause Of You' which is slated for release in early 2017. This is something I'm really excited to share with everyone. I've put a lot of hard work into it and I think you guys are going to love it!

& lastly, what can we expect from these shows you have just landed?

Well….. I've been working hard on a brand new live show with all my new music – Toyo live set will be playing as a three piece band with a live drummer (Sam) and guitarist (Steve) and even adding some sexy sax into the sets! If I'm coming to your town, be sure to get along and check it out, I promise you won't be disappointed!

Bio

Float on the warm currents of Toyo’s sound, created with a positive and experimental energy.

Jarrod Bartlett is the face of Toyo, focusing on making tracks that are refined, chilled out and heavily textured. Having played guitar for as long as he can remember, Toyo blends organic and synthesized instruments in the studio and his live shows. He is joined on stage by guitarist Steve Zumstein and drummer Sam Dignand, both highly skilled and creative artists in their own right. The synergy between them makes every Toyo live set memorable.

After working for a year locked in the studio, Toyo entered the scene in late 2015 and immediately got the attention of festivals like Subsonic, Rabbits Eat Lettuce and Dragon Dreaming. Since then, he has supported CHVRCHES, opened for Opiuo, and has a tour through Canada to look forward to.

Toyo's debut single, Wonderlust, features Amy Kirkpatrick from the Vancouver based electro-indie duo Data Romance, and received support from Triple J, BMA Magazine, Shockone and Opiuo. With strong momentum and sense of musical direction Toyo is a name to watch in 2016.
